DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

I think I lost root with the manual update. I restored through Voodoo and it says I am rooted but apps are saying I am not rooted. Any idea?

Sounds like you didn't take my advice to update your su binary. Copied from another forum:

So I didn't read the directions for voodoo OTA (dumb), and forgot to update my SU binary before updating to JB. Voodoo said that I was rooted, but it wasn't actually showing I was rooted. Spent some time trying to figure out how to fix it but I resolved it. If anyone runs into the same issue use the steps below (copied from another site):

1) Download the unsure su from here and put it somewhere on your C Drive. It will be used in the following push step (Assuming windows) (This is a WIDE OPEN su without any controls). (sparky root i believe?)
https://www.dropbox....516e/tCB-Ep-3YQ
2) start a CMD window and logon to adb
3) su -
4) verify you have root:
id
uid=0(root) gid=0(root)........
If you don't you can try these instead of 'su':

"/system/su-backup" or "/system/su_backup"

5) remount system as RW:
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
6) make a backup of current su just in case in adb
cat /system/bin/su > /system/bin/su1
7) open a new CMD window and push the su binary from step 1 to the sdcard using the path from where ever you put it.
adb push c:\<some path>\su /sdcard/
8) Then copy it to /system/bin from the adb session where you su'd.
cat /sdcard/su > /system/bin/su
9) Change permissions for SU
chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
10) download superuser (NOT SUPERSU) from play store if you do not have it already.
11) have superuser upgrade the su binary. It may fail to remount system as RO. Just rerun the update in superuser and it will work the 2nd time. You don't need to remount system as RO manually since superuser update of SU will do that for you.
12) congrats. your now rerooted.
13) remove the backup after you know your OKAY.
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system
rm /system/bin/su1
mount -o remount,ro /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /system

Have fun with that. :)

From SamuriHL
"First off, voodoo lies. It'll work. Second, supersu pro has the same kind of mechanism that voodoo has so either will work. I use supersu pro and plan on using it and voodoo to protect root if and when I decide to do the update."

Thanks! That was my other thought was can I use both. Will do!

Update successful for me! Already smoother transitions.

Only issue so far is that Google Now prompted me to update Search, but it comes up as Device Not Compatible.

I'm getting a e-verification fail. Downloaded twice. Totally stock other than grabbing the file Sam posted. Any ideas?

I uninstalled SS and re-enabled all disabled apps. Still get (status 7) during update. It fails with some checksums for services.odex. Is there anything I can do short of going through HoB again?

Oh almost forgot! Can anyone confirm that webtop/lapdock are still working good. It one of the most important features that I use all the time. I hadn't seen it mentioned much yet and wanted to check. Thanks!

So far so good.

Got Sam's file. Voodoo unroot. Used stock recovery. Error 7. Uninstalled ss tried again. Install success. Voodoo re root worked. So k kept root through install with voodoo. One question, will job ROMs run as smooth and before or will they encounter more bugs with tje kernel updaye

It has not, and will not ever, been touched at all. What you had in ICS is what you have in JB. That feature is dead.

About to manually apply update on phone. Folks say to make sure you update SU binaries and use Voodoo rootkeeper.

I already have root-keeper with root backed-up, but what do you mean by update SU binaries - is this the same as updating BusyBox, or is this something different (within Super SU)?

I also want to factory wipe the phone after the update because it's been laggy lately - will that remove root (if it does - if I use Voodoo root before wiping and then re-install it, will it be able to restore root... is there a file I need to copy off the phone before wiping and place back onto the phone to have it restore root?)

Has anyone gotten the OTA yet? I DLed the file Sam posted just in case but I want to see when the OTA comes in.

Works fine, though it did change my wallpaper to something I haven't seen before. It's not listed in the stock wallpapers either.

I knew it wouldn't be updated but wanted to make sure it wasn't glitching bad on JB. So angry Google smashed it.. I hope Chrome books fail because of that!

does the file have to be on the sd card to install it? im at work and without a usb cable to transfer it from my downloads to my sd card.

Samuri, been following you for a while now but wanted to say thanks for this! I did the exact same thing and this resolved it for me. Not sure where you pulled it from, but thanks a bunch!

My Bionic is running better than ever! Assuming it stays that way, I'll likely hold onto it until we know what the next round of flagship phones will offer the Android community.

Thanks for the assistance.

Update: Quadrant rated my Bionic with ICS at 2404, with JB it's now at 2477.

Samuri,

I tried the method you provided above. I lost the SU that was provided via that dropbox link and now I just have the original backup SU1. I cannot rename this back to SU. Now I cannot get root privileges at all. Restoring root from Voodoo no longer does anything. Did I just completely lose root by trying this? Is there anyway to rename SU1 back to SU?

When I try to update Binaries I will now get "Failed to find currently installed su binary. Update cannot continue." Now this is obviously because SU is now named SU1, but it looks like I have no way to rename it. Damn it.

I keep getting an error message that the process com.android.phone has stopped, like every 5 seconds. My phone is unusable right now.

I manually installed the update from stock .246. The phone is rooted, but I never installed any custom ROMs and I restored all apps in TB before running the update through the stock recovery. Update had no errors. I've already tried wiping cache and rebooting the phone. I was worried about wiping data, but at this point if that will fix my problem I'd be willing to lose root. Is that a safe thing to do, or can wiping brick my phone?

I forgot to add that I use the OTA rootkeeper and was able to keep root access.

Any ideas?

EDIT: So I did a factory reset on the phone and it works great now. I am still rooted too. Feels like a new phone again!
