Drop calls on Nexus 5 ATT!

was doing some digging;
found at&t and verizon's working with erricson & a company called roamware to implement this lte / volte roaming thingy / test -

AT&T, Verizon Mulling Managed Services With Ericsson | Light Reading

i also educated myself on lte roaming, this diameter authentication, authorisation and accounting
protocol, & how THAT'S affecting our nexus 5s & other phones during this testing.. -

**any can read this if they want** but i'm not delving into it now..

an interesting thing about our nexus 5s, are these settings -

which from this screenshot, i don't if they are toggle ON or OFF, but it shows capabilities..

& while on this topic xda is busy flashing roms to fix what ailing their connection from the network's end, they have buried within their own threads treasures which they can take lesson from -

Turn on SMS over IMS?

Nexus 5 Network Type Tests

i'm for sure of one thing, our next major nexus update, is to rectify this -

Hi there,
Just wanted to share that I had several calls with AT&T and they launched a case and also replaced my sim and concluded it's a device issue. Called up Google, got told at first they received similar reports and it's due to the solar flares. Later, I was told that they got complaints mainly from the NY/NJ area. They said they tried replacing devices for customers but no longer do it for this specific issue and recommend using 3G as a workaround. Called back AT&T to mention to them that it's their VoLTE causing the issue. They said they tested it and there are no issues from their side and recommended I get an AT&T device, they will not support an unlocked device.

I read in this thread that the issue is caused by the fact that Nexus 5 doesn't support VoLTE. Do we know if the Lollipop upgrade will fix this?

Thanks.

No, we do not know, from my understanding the Nexus 5 is capable of VoLTE, but whether Google / LG is going to make the necessary changes to enable VoLTE is any body's guess.

I should also point out that it is not entirely clear if it is strictly a software thing or if it more of a network gear thing. According to my understanding HD Voice is already rolled out in places like Illinois, Texas, Georgia, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Indiana and we are not seeing complaints from Nexus 5 users in those areas which tends to point to a specific issue in the NY Metro Area and thus lends credence to the issue being network based and not Software based.

So, it is entirely possible that Android 5.0 Lollipop will not mitigate the situation and it will all come down to at&t and eventually them (at&t) correcting whatever they have configured incorrectly to resolve our issues with dropped calls in the NY Metro Area.

Which brings to me another point and one which frustrates immenseley as it seems so hard to get companies to listen. It is almost as if front line customer service is to keep the message from getting to where it needs to go. I am member of another forum (devoted to a different industry entirely) and some of the companies in that industry have empowered company representatives active on the bulletin board (aka forum) and can pass along issues (like this one) to the right people to get the issue solved. I can think of at least 10 different issues which have arisen over the years and the company reps on the bulletin board where able to fix the issue and keeps us the bulletin board members informed. In fact, some of these company reps user the forum as a marketing tool to tell us the customers about planned changes, marketing initiatives, etc slightly before the general public to get the word out. Instead, as wireless customers and mobile phone fans we seem to be unable many times to get our issues resolved and have to hope that the people in the places to get things done here the message and implement a fix.

Sometimes this happens and sometimes it doesn't and we the customer are left out in the cold. I blame many things for this, but I place a little blame on the tech reporting/blogging industry which doesn't seem to want to rock the bot, I have emailed tech reporters to advocate on our behalf and have either not heard back or have been basically told to be happy as a reader and leave it at that.

Bottom line we end users NEED an advocate, the tech blogs and forums like this one seem like a perfect place, but sadly to date it is the same old status quo.

I apologize for my rant, just a personal pet peeve.

Dan

I am having the same issues in Northern NJ on both of our Nexus 5's. Just came home from AT&T corporate store, told to drop to 3g for calls which is fine for now but awful long term. Is it better to call AT&T or Google to lodge a complaint so they fix this ASAP?

Please do both.. I did.. You can do online chat for either to make it easy.

I conference-called ATT and LG Tech Support on this issue. Both organizations exhibited total incompetency and schoolyard bullying behaviour. ATT said it is an LG issue and cannot help, since it's not an ATT branded device (i.e. the Nexus 5). The LG person said they'd never heard of this problem in their life and it's exclusively an ATT issue. LG will not help in any way.

Not a single one of the multiple agents I spoke to mentioned anything about VoLTE or HD voice compatibility problems with the Nexus 5 in the NY area or elsewhere. ATT specifically said they are NOT working on a fix whatsoever, they are simply accumulating and throwing it blindly over the fence to LG to fix. LG is saying they won't fix and that it's an ATT issue only.

Both organizations will need to lose a handful of customers before they wake up.

Northern Delaware area checking in here. My wife's Nexus 5 has been experiencing this issue for the last two weeks +/-. I did the switch to 3G then rebooted a day ago and she hasn't complained of a dropped call at this point, but it's frustrating not getting the speed and service we are paying for. Ohh, and I lodged a complaint with AT&T regarding this problem.

Not true - In Piscataway and Clark and Rahway I can not get an LTE call to go through. Have to force the N5 to 3g for it to work.

Seriously considering going to T-Mo pre paid since my contact ended last week. I mean AT&T can not be ruder.

i just switched back to LTE as preferred network. calls are fine now. will leave it that way and test.

I'm having the opposite issue I think unless I missed something.

When I end a call I loose service. It takes my phone 5 seconds or more before it reacquires a network connection.

I, too, am experiencing this issue. I've noticed that when I'm on LTE, and I call my voicemail, for example, it doesn't even last 7 seconds before the call cuts off, and then I look at the signal icon, and it's dropped to "No signal" and then pops back up to "LTE", and then to "3G".

AT&T called me today to find out if my problem was solved, they say the issue has been resolved. I said, "I don't know, I have to change my phone settings back to LTE. Let me change it and call me right back, OK?" She agreed. I ended the call and switched back to LTE. Few minutes later she called back, I answered the phone and bam! Dropped call. Still waiting for them to call back again.

Think she understood there was still a problem?

Just bought a second N5 a few weeks ago and decided to get an RMA. I don't like the idea of having to dumb-down my phone to a slower network to make phone calls. I thought having an unbranded phone was ok but now it looks like it might be a bad idea.

I don't want to jinx myself by saying so, but my N5 has (finally) been staying connected for phone calls while set for LTE mobile data!! Yeah! I'll keep my fingers crossed for now...

Had the same problem. Updated to android lollipop developer preview and haven't had a problem since.

It looks like At&t has fixed the issue...at least in PA. Both my One+ and N5 are working on LTE voice calls. As of Fri. Nov. 6th.

Also working in DE,MD,VA,WV.
