Duplicate contacts after whatsapp installation

Same Issue here but with Mi A2. I've also Revolut, so my problem is that I can see 4 contacts on phone app and two on contacts app (one real contact, one Whatsapp and two for Revolut).

Is strange because I've an Xpera Z3 with same app and works fine, and my girlfriend has an Mi A1 and works fine...

I've follow the steps and the same behaviour. After delete the Revolut and Whatsapp accounts the duplicated disappear, but when I add the accounts again it appear.

Greetings!!.

I also had the same issue with my MI A2, but I fixed it. I installed whatsapp and also turned on the contact sync. So there were many duplicate entries in my contact list. What I did to fix the issue was the following:

(1) I opened Whatsapp and pressed the button to start a new conversation, after that I pressed the App Settings Button and selected Refresh
(2) Then I opened the Contact App over Whatsapp and selected the App Settings Button in WhatsApp and pressed Contacts
(3) Again, I used The App Settings Button in the Contacts App and pressed customise view
(4) There appeared a Whatsapp Entry. So, I deselected all others and selected only the WhatsApp contacts
(5) Then I selected all the Contacts in the list and deleted the (Whatsapp) contacts
(6) After the phone finished the deletion I switched back to my common list

Kind Regards,
Luke

First of all you should do this
1- Go to settings - accounts
2- Click WhatsApp account then turn off auto-sync
On my Xiaomi Mi A2 works like a charm!
Cheers!

Above works to get rid of the duplicate contacts but when you add new number to the phonebook and open whatsapp it seems to detect there's change in the phone's contacts list and if that new contact has whatsapp account the auto-sync goes back on by itself and it adds back all of the duplicates.

I have Mi A2 Lite with Android One aswell so the issue seem to be limited to the android one phonebook app?

Hi,

I am new to the world of android. Moving from windows mobile.

I got a new phone mi a1. Got started using my gmail account. Checked my contacts. It had in total 3 contacts. Then installed whatapp. works well. Checked my contacts again. Now i had 6 contacts. Each names showing up 2 times.

Checked contacts.google.com. Had in total 3 contacts and not 6.

Linked one contact in contacts app to check. Now cannot even unlink it.

So now i have total 5 contacts in my contacts list. (2 Contacts shown twice and one contact linked which cant be unlinked).

Any idea why this happens? What is the solution? Once this sorted i can move my actual contacts from Hotmail to gmail.

Hoping to find the solution soon.

Thanks

Facing the same issue in my new Mi A2 lite.

I just figured it. In contacts app, touch the "..." Button in the top right, select "customize view", change "all contacts" to "customize"and uncheck "starred in Android" selection box. Save the changes. Worked here (Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite).

I'm sorry. That only works on "Contacts" app, but doesn't change a thing at all in "Phone" app.

PROBLEM SOLVED :D

I have an android one, Xiaomi Mi A2, and i had the same problem.
To solve the problem just do this simple steps:
Go to accounts and remove the whatsapp from the accounts, don´t worry, this will not remove your whatsapp app.
Check your contacts you will see that all the duplicats are gone.

Thank you. This worked for me. Was really annoying.

Ok i thought my problem was solved but every time i remove it, it keeps adding it self back after and contacts are duplicated again. It's very annoying. i even turned off "Automatically sync data" but the problem persists.

I think this is the solution. Credit to the people of the XDA developers site.

It is differences in the formatting of the phone numbers held by Google compared to WhatsApp and the dialler app not then able to merge them. Its a known issue for Google apparently.

It is easily fixed using the PlayStore App Twitch2 that shows you the contacts from both sources and then formats them with a couple of clicks to bring them into line.

See this post... https://forum.xda-developers.com/max-pro-m2/how-to/guide-duplicate-contacts-google-dailer-t3883924

App store link.... https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=twitch.angelandroidapps.cnf2

I suspect I may need to keep the app on the device and run it periodically to tidy stuff up as it goes out of step in the future until there is an update to resolve the merging.

Cheers, Ian

I tried to provide a link but as I joined this site to just help out on this, it wont let me put links in as I am a new user! A bit frustrating.

Basically search the Play store for "Twitch 2! Contacts Formatter"

If you want to read a little more on the background, find the post in XDA with the exact title "[GUIDE] [FIX] Duplicate Contacts in Google Dailer/Contacts"

...and also "Duplicate contacts on phone app" on XDA, see last post.

To remove that very annoying problem once and for all You need to complete 4 simple steps:

Step 1 - Open Settings app on your Android device

Step 2 - Go to Accounts and then manually disable sync of WhatsApp, Duo, and every other app that makes separate contacts in your "Phone"

Step 3 - Return to the Step 1 and open Apps&notification. Here you need to find Contacts Storage system app and clear its cache and data. P.s. you will probably need to enable Show system checkbox to make contacts storage visible

Step 4 Just reboot your device and enjoy new-old beauty of your contact list

Works excellent for me and my prehistoric Mi A1 after three reboots and opening/closing WhatsApp

Facing the same issue in my new Mi A2 lite.

Open contact apps from whatsapp, the customview try only show "simcard" contacts only. then select all, delete all contact. next..
customview try only show "whatsapp contacts" contacts only. then select all, delete all contact. next..

finally, open whatsapp and refresh contact list.
