Easy Root (Windows only)

Just used dbz's new method, and it works great!

@3coup3
1. As soon as you start flashing the files. At the push, it's still legal.
2. Same as above
2. Yup... Uhh, I can't seem to find the XDA thread right now, but essentially you can find the stock rom that has S-On. Once S is On, you're essentially "unrooted" (eg, cannot get back to your root access thins or custom roms).

I'm interested in freeing my Thunderbolt as much as possible (including eventual root) but I'm new to Android and I'd like to break in my device and do a shakedown for a few weeks to make sure I didn't get a lemon.

I have a couple of general questions:
*When does USB-enabled tweaking become "hacking"? (Probably when it has the potential to cost HTC/Verizon money.)
*At what point do you void the warranty? (And can you badger customer service into overlooking slight tweaks?)
*In principle, is it possible to reset the phone to its factory settings so that Verizon/HTC are none the wiser? I expect it is too soon to find a guide for this yet.

I keep seeing references to firmware. I "flashed" the firmware in a DVD drive a few years ago...I was warned that it was one-way process. It was...and it didn't end well. Are "roots" one way?

yes you can go back to stock, unrooted, just have to flash the stock ruu. this will return to stock, unroot, s-on. Rooting VOIDS the warranty regardless. thats the price you pay to have full access to your device.

I used this method to root my Tunderbolt yester to start the debloat process. As it turns out, I didn't need to root. Instead, I suggest using the psneuter method to freeze bloat applications found here: Temp Root just to remove bloat apps? - xda-developers

One piece of advise, I followed the directions there, but no where in the steps dis it included getting getting psneuter for the process to actually work. You will need to find and download psneuter in addition to those steps listed. That method worked on my wife's non-rooted TB.

Back to using this method to root. The process was fairly lengthy from downloading 800MB from a throttled fileserver to actuall pushing images that large to the phone. From start to finish it took about 4 hours, but 2 of those hours were just downloading the file.

Before step 1: I had already installed the JDK (Java Development Kit), Android SDK, and HTC Sync drivers while trying to use the psneuter method above, so some if not all of these steps will also need to be done if attempting this process.

Step 1: Worked perfectly without any problems.
Step 2: Generated an error and I had to kill the rooter process and start step 2 over. The second time I ran step 2 it completed without any errors.
Step 3: The process completed without any errors and the phone did not reboot. I thought I had root, but the phone wasn't actually rooted. A while later I re-ran just step 3 and this time the phone rebooted at the end of the process and I had root access.

I'm not actually going to use any of my new found root power (except backing up my settings with Titanium Backup). My initial goal was to de-bloat the phone and the psneuter method for that was much easier so I recommend that instead if all you want to do is debloat.

Good luck.

need some help here. flashed easy root 1,2,and 3. i have s-off, and easy root told me that "i have a completely rooted thunderbolt. rebooted and tried to flash latest recovery in cwm. it says "an error ocurred while attempting to run priviledged commands." can't access root apps, and cant download or update anything from marketplace.i've tried re-flashing at hboot, several times, to no avail. can anyone give me some idea or direction to go on this? not familiar with adb, which is why i chose this method. in hindsight i should've learned adb and manually rooted. help.

Strangely, my attempt is not working properly.

Step 1 - it looks like it moves all the files over, but then the phone never reboots into the bootloader menu.

Any ideas?

Usb debugging on? Make sure youre following all of the directions. You gotta have your bolt in charge only for the process too
