Email FAQ (Updated 7/10/2010) and Q & A Thread

Be advised, forwarding with Yahoo mail requires upgrading to mail plus...plus money is what they should say. it doesn't cost too much but setting up a gmail account is free and its push so the choice was easy for me.

(first post in android central, hooray!)

If true, unbelievable that they make you pay to forward your mail to a different account. It's decisions like these that have ruined Yahoo...

I've been having Gmail issues for the past few days. I found this thread and read some of the first few posts. The only thing that came close was the thing about wifi messing with gmail sync. I have it on all the time because I don't know where I'll find wifi. Anyways, my problem is that my phone doesn't notify me when there's new gmail, even when there is. I check on my computer and the emails are there in the inbox and then I go to my phone and it's not there. However, when I hit refresh, next to the GMAIL title it would show the number of unread messages but it wouldn't display the new messages anywhere on my phone.

Testing the wifi issue, I turned it off and sent myself an email from my computer with my hotmail account. Boom, the email hits my gmail and I can see it on my computer but it still hasn't shown up on my phone. I manually hit refresh and it does exactly what it has been doing the past few days. (1) new message but no actual new message showing up in the inbox of my phone. Has anyone encountered something like this before? I'm at a loss because I don't know what to do now.

Help.

Thanks

I have spent several of the total 22 hours I've had my Incred perusing this forum to no avail and apologize if this is a repeat question..I just can't find the answer. But...from a positive side, I'm blown away by the willingness of others to assist....thank you....lots of tips picked up.

I've tried several times, including a hard reset twice so I could start over, to work through this...I'm missing something and would appreciate some help. I've set up 2 email accounts...my Gmail and Yahoo but....

Exchange Active Sync:

No problem setting up the account and email works. I clicked calendar and contacts to also sync when I set the account up. Calendar syncs but contacts do not. The "sync" has an explanation mark in it and I have no contacts on the phone.

I can't figure the source of the problem. I had a BB and didn't have an issue BUT of course that was a sync directly to my PC. I would prefer not to use a PC sync to Outlook and use the Droid as it was designed. I've set this account up 3 times and get the same issue.

Help please.

Kim

Are you using an automatic task killer or manager, which you are using to kill any background tasks and services, by any chance? If so, disable that feature, restart your phone (though I believe that logging in to Google Talk will restart the necessary service), and see if you start getting background notifications.

Also, just to ask the question, are you using the gmail app, or the HTC Mail app?

I'm not using any task killer or manager. I've many people say this thing is a beast and wouldn't need one even with a bunch of apps running in the back. So far so good, no lagginess of any kind. It really is a beast.

And yes I'm using the gmail app. Everything worked fine for the first few days up until the beginning of this week and my gmails stopped showing up. I wouldn't know I had emails until I checked and found out from a comp.

does anyone know an app that supports push for POP servers? i tried using K-9 but my school email still wont connect :(

my exchange mail stops synchronizing at least once a day with the error message "error occurred on the computer running the Exchange Server." deleting/recreating the account fixes the problem each time, but it's becoming very annoying to redo my signature and what not.

i have admin rights on my company's exchange server (ex2003, sp2) and everything looks ok on our end, although i certainly could login and poke around if someone gave me something specific to look around for. thanks in advance for any feedback.

Are there any logs on the server you could look at? There was one user, on the first page, that reported the same problem you did, but I didn't see a follow-up post from him.

thanks a lot i appreciate it. i'll check it out.

have you used it and what do you think of the app? i see its beta thats why i ask

I've used it on Windows Mobile and Palm devices. I liked it on both platforms. I've never tried it on Android. The beta program has been around for 11 years. They OEM their software to the carriers, and use the beta testers to test the software out before they release major revisions to the carriers. In my experience their software is very stable, even when it's in beta.

For device type choose other, and for model choose Android.

I also continue to have this problem. I just remove and recreate the account. Not a fix by any means but it'll have to do for now.

Ok, I figured out my gmail issues. I had to go and clear the cache in the applications>manage applications. After I cleared it out my new gmails started to show up again. But by doing this I also realized something, one of the main battery draining issues happens to lie with the gmail app. In the days where my gmail was borked I had a pretty substantial boost in battery life; 4 hrs to around 6+ hours. Now I'm not putting all the blame on gmail but it is at least one of the culprits and it was very noticeable the moment I fixed my gmail issues.

Any email application that is set to sync real time is going to be a battery drain culprit. I've had this problem for years with Exchange. The price I/we pay to have real-time push

hmm maybe i'll not have the app running all the time and just check it when i need to, then ATK it when i'm done.

that would work right?
