Email FAQ (Updated 7/10/2010) and Q & A Thread

When you connect your phone to an exchange server it will enforce certain security parameters on your phone that your exchange administrator has setup before hand, for example it might force you to use a password to unlock your phone every time you want to use it. My company does not enforce this so I have never had to get around this, and I don't have an android phone yet to test this... but I have seen an app out there that will, supposedly, disable this... it is called Lockpicker and here is a link to androidcentral about it; http://www.androidcentral.com/quick-app-lockpicker.

Cory, can you please verify this and make to make sure this is a viable alternative to get around this exchange enforcement.

Ahh I love you guys!! Did it on my Incredible and its working like a charm. Pattern unlock is much quicker than typing.

I would like to have both of my pop emails come into the same area like on the Storm instead of having to check 2 different email accounts. Is their a way or app to do this? If I forward both POP accounts to my gmail will that work?

OK - I'm still having a problem connecting my account. I've got an email off to my IT department, but I think it is related to the screen lock requirement. Is there a way to enable the password screen lock that isn't just connect the dots? I can't find it if there is...and searching only shows me all the ways to avoid doing. Man, I'm backwards!

Ok, Ill admit that I am anal, but it seems that at times exchange email doesnt show up until I wake the Inc, Example. I get email from my answering service at noon, 3, 6, 9, and midnight with recaps of all calls taken by them. I noticed at 6:13 pm that I had not gotten my 6pm recap. I hit the top button and swiped and voila the mail flowed in to the inbox with a 6PM time stamp. I have the sync setting under exchange on the phone set to :As items arrive" Am I just crazy or is there a setting I have missed?
Please advise....
Thanks in advance.

Help, please: Desktop Outlook Folders Do Not All Appear on Phone

I have what seems like an odd problem in getting my Desktop Outlook email to sync properly with my phone using Exchange Active Sync. Active Sync is working fine in capturing and syncing the emails from my Outlook Inbox. That's what it shows as the main entries when I tap on the Email application on the phone.

I also have a number of other "mail folders," most of which I use sporadically to save emails on selected topics, but a couple of which I created specifically in which I would put emails that I don't want to lose and want to be able to get to fairly easily without searching my entire Inbox or general saved emails. These two folders are actually subfolders in the "Saved Mail" folder, along with about ten other subfolders for the emails on selected topics.

For some reason, however, when I go to Menu>Folders on my phone and check out the other folders that Exchange Active Sync has carried over to my phone, the two particular folders that I want most are not there, although the other ten or so subfolders did carry over to my phone. There are also a bunch of other folders showing on my phone that I did not knowingly create on my Desktop -- none of which actually have any emails in them -- labeled "Sync Issues," "Sync Issues\Conflicts," "Sync Issues\Local Failures," and "Sync Issues\Server Failures." (My phone also includes the "Sent Mail," "Junk Mail," and "Deleted Mail" folders.)

If I had to guess what differentiates the two subfolders that did not carry over to my phone from the ten that did, I would speculate that those two subfolders probably have the most saved emails in them of all the subfolders -- although far fewer than are in my Inbox.

I spoke to tech support at HTC, who insisted that the issue is not the result of anything in the phone or the Active Sync program, but must have something to do with the way my exchange server is set up. But our IT consultant is not aware of anything that would cause this result. Does anybody have any ideas as to what the problem might be and how I might be able to get those two subfolders to appear on my phone, along with the emails that I save into them?

I may have skipped past this but is it true that the only email sources that are pushed are gmail (through the app) and exchange?? is there any way to change that? i'm so used to having my emails on 3 accounts pushed to my phone because i'm currently a blackberry user.

Im still having problems with my email, i can recieve email but i cannot send it. I tried my wifes phone with the same settings to see if it was the phone and its not, it does the same thing. I am able to get my email from outlook express but i cannot reply or forward any of the messages. Any tips?

I have tried POP and IMAP.

My emails almost all disappeared last night on my 2 different POP accounts. Is there a setting that saying how long emails stay. On the Storm you could choose a lenght of time to keep emails on the phone.

I haven't yet seen an answer to this one. I woke up to find the same thing. All emails except for the one that came through today just disappeared off my phone this morning.

I, too, am looking for an option for this.

Thanks

There is a third party app in the market called K-9 which supports push for IMAP servers that support IDLE. The HTC Mail app does not support IMAP push.

My guess is that, if this is an ISP email account, they do not support the use of their SMTP server for sending mail outside of their network. If you have a gmail account, you can use your gmail server settings for SMTP to send mail on behalf of those accounts. You probably need to set up POP mail access on your gmail account through settings.

The server settings are:

login required
User Name: your full Gmail address [username@gmail.com]
Password: your Gmail password
SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
Security type: SSL
port: 465

I am using my corporate exchange email and when I open an email on my phone and then delete the email, it moves it UNread into my deleted folder on my desktop. Is there a way to delete from my phone ONLY and leave it on my desktop? Again, this is an exchange setup, so I don't have option to "leave on server".

Thanks,
Bryan

I think I covered this in the 1st post. If I'm misunderstanding your question, please let me know.

Question:

I would like to delete email messages on my phone without deleting them in the Inbox on my desktop Outlook. When I hit the "delete" option from my phone, however, the email is automatically moved to the "Deleted Items" folder on my desktop.

Is there a way to delete my old emails from my phone so they don't clog memory and clutter up my phone with emails I don't need anymore (some emails I do want to keep on my phone, however) without automatically deleting the same email from my Desktop Outlook?

Answer:

No. Because you are using Active Sync, the idea is that your email will always stay in sync, with your Exchange server, regardless of which Email client you are viewing from. This device has plenty of memory; I wouldn't worry about this being an issue. If you still want to control memory usage, you can go into settings and lower the Mail Size Limit, and whether to include file attachments in downloaded messages. Once you open a message you can download the rest of the message and attachments if you choose to do so.

I know this works for IMAP. See if it works for POP also:

Open mail & select the account you want to configure. Then click menu > more > settings > send & receive > download options. Change the value to what you want it to be.

I indeed must have missed the original post. I did read through it, but missed it! Thanks for the response Cory. Sorry to have waisted your time on this!

Thanks for the reply, what you said makes sense to me.

I was wondering if this is different than the blackberry email? I was able to get email and send, reply and forward email with the same account on the blackberry. I was assuming that i could set it up with the same settings on the INC. and it would work.

Has anyone received the firmware update that is supposed to fix issues with Exchange Activesync? For the 2nd day in a row now, the syncing on my DI has stopped. Going into Settings -> Accounts and Sync -> Exchange Activesync, I see next to the Mail checkbox the sync symbol with an exclamation point. On the bottom it says, "Error occurred on the computer running the Exchange Server." I was able to get mail flowing yesterday by removing and re-adding the account. I sure hope this doesn't become a daily routine.

To my knowledge the update only addresses an issue where you do a reply all with the CC: field left blank, it randomly adds addresses from your address book that you didn't specify.

Could there actually be an issue with your Exchange server as the error suggests? Mine has worked flawlessly and I'm not reading reports of this being a wide spread issue.

After struggling to get my phone to sync with Exchange ActiveSync I finally asked my IT department for some help. Apparently the specific reason for my inability to sync is a known issue to Google:

Issue 4475 - android - Support for ActiveSync provisioning protocol - Project Hosting on Google Code

The short story is that the Android Exchange ActiveSync solution does not have provisions for all of the possible Exchange configurations. In some cases users have had success using TouchDown as a workaround, but I was not able to. Until it gets fixed I'm using the POP configuration.
