Emoji in text messages

I have KitKat 4.4.2 on my GS4. I can see emojis anywhere on my phone, facebook, twitter, instagram, snapchat, vine, and on the internet. But if a friend texts me, i do not get them. When I send them, my friends can see my emojis fine. This is what I see when they text me:

How do I fix this?

Maybe the SMS app your using doesn't support them? I can see them but I use 8sms from the Play Store.

I can see the ones I send, just not theirs. I use the standard message app on my samsung. Should I switch to hangouts?

You could just to see if you can see the ones they send.

I have a Samsung Galaxy exihit and I downloaded a app where I can have emojis, then I delete it now,I downloaded again and i can't no emojis at all. Why is that?

Try using the app Textra as well as the Emoji plugin. That itself is pretty cool, as it also lets to customize the backscreen/text bubbles

+1 for Textra! Works great with Iphones etc for group messaging and the Emojis are great. No issues on my son's S4.
