Epic Versus Evo

@Aero: I also didn't mean to be rude. I was in a rush to get off the Metro, so my wording was really poor. I had an iPhone, but I don't think it had a real GPS, so I can't actually run a test. My Epic is locking on perfectly, so this looks like it might only affect some of the devices. I do agree with the fact that there needs to be an update to fix ALL devices.

Well I want to say congrates to any New epic 4g owner, now you have a 4g high end powerfully device like the Evo 4g. I'm keeping my Evo for my reasons but let's stop the Evo and epic hate. Really this is not the 360 vs ps3, its 2 of Sprints best phones. And to Anyone who thinks that the Epic 4g is always going to trump the Evo is just stupid and have to ask there self, how long before something better comes out? Will you leave the epic for that just to talk trash the Evo and epic? It's stupid and everyone needs to enjoy there phone and stop working about specs and be happy with which every phone makes you happy and fills your needs.

I've been a BB user for the last couple years, but have decided to go Android when my upgrade goes active on October 1st. I had my choices narrowed to the Evo and Epic, and since the Epic was released today, I decided to hit the Sprint Store and check them out side by side. My opinions are below.

Screen: I didn't think 4" would be all that different from 4.3", I was wrong. While the screen is noticeably smaller, but the Epic's screen is so much sharper. The colors really pop on the Epic. When holding one in each hand, the Evo seems a little faded.

Camera: After snapping a couple shots with the Epic, and checking out the camera mode on the Evo, its easy to see the lower MP camera on the Epic is far and away better.

Keyboard: I prefer a physical keyboard, so obviously that draws me to the Epic. Its a comfortable keyboard with nice, easy to push buttons. I tried the virtual keyboard on both, and while its a little bigger on the Evo, I actually preferred the virtual keyboard on the Epic.

Speed: I admit, I know next to nothing about this kind of stuff. The Epic seemed faster.

Feel: Both felt pretty good in my hand. The slider on the Epic was better than I thought it would be, and doesn't seem like a toy.

All told, come October 1, I'll be rocking an Epic. Hopefully Froyo has been released for it by then.

I just played around with the Epic at the Sprint store not too long ago. They had 2 Epics and an Evo next to each other(I have an Evo too).

I wanted to do a brief comparison of the screen since that's one of the big selling points on the Epic. First off, the color is great...maybe the best of any screen out. What I noticed though was that the Evo screen is definitely brighter when both are turned up to the max level. Looking at regular webpages and internet browsing, there's not that dramatic of a difference in quality as I thought there would be. I imagine there may be a bigger difference when watching videos or 3D gaming.

They both seem to be about as speedy loading apps(again, 3D gaming I assume there would be a more noticeable difference).

They keyboard is better than I expected. I could see how it would be easy to get used to, although I myself prefer touchscreens now(especially since I'm getting used to Swype).

The phone feels comfortable in the hand, although I think the Evo looks a bit more stylish.

Overall, Epic is a good phone. I think I'll stick with the Evo though(I'm still within my 30 days). To me, the difference in regular web browsing wasn't that great of a difference as I thought it'd be and the form factor suits me better. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

So you like heavier phones, eh? I was actually thrilled to see that the Epic was so much lighter than the Evo. The Evo doesn't even have a keyboard, and is almost as thick as - and IS heavier than - the Epic, which has a keyboard (a good one too).

People keep saying this. What is th problem with the buttons? I mean i touch them and they work . its a screen so theres no buttons. but maybe I'm not getting what people mean by this.

I can't believe how many Epic vs. EVO threads keep popping up. You'd think the Epic was the iPhone or something.

Anyway... another merge.

Edit:

Is it a record yet? Most threads ever merged?

Almost. The day the iPhone 4 came out, there were threads being opened at a rate I couldn't keep up with :p

Well it looks like the Epic got it right when it comes to forwarding emails through an exchange server. And it can even read .eml from Outlook. Wish HTC would fix this.

Hmm started laughing when you mentioned dead hardware. The Evo has a bigger screen, yes it does lack that saturated colored Super AMOLED, but it's still bigger. Touchwiz is hideous in every sense... Both phones pack about the same amount of power, but running 1ghz CPU's and 512mb of ram, and as for GPU once the Evo is rooted it's not far behind in FPS. So again your logic on this is pure failure.

If you don't have both in hand it is hard to compare. I happen to have both. People can quote specs all they want. The reality is a stock Epic running 2.1 outperforms a rooted Evo 4G overclocked and with Cyanogen Mod 6. No hacks are needed for the Epic to to run fairly lag free and silky smooth out of the box. It is more "iphone" like in that respect. When rooted and on 2.2, there really will be no comparison performance wise. I really wish they had a keyboardless version on Sprint. The Evo is definitely more solid build wise. That can not be questioned.

EVO still King

I used to prefer the physical keyboard over virtual option but now with the EVO and Swype there is really no reason for this to be the deciding factor when trying to decide. I can imput text on Swype much quicker than ever imagined, I used to think I was a skilled two thumb typer. I wonder how many people will use the slide out keyboard anyways when sending basic text messages.
The EVO's overall design in my opinion seems more elegant and better built even though some might disagree with their bad experience of screen separation or other minor issues. I think the Epic will be no different and have some issues as well.
The larger screen to me is a good enough reason to choose it over the Epic even though the Epic might have a sharper look indoors.
It really boils down to your preferences but having used iPhones, Blackberry, and Palm Pre, this has been the most complete phone to date. I hope HTC follows up with EVO 2 and improves on what is already a classy phone.

Get the EPIC if you:

-really like playing games on your mobile
-Take a lot of pictures and videos and quality is very important to you

Get the EVO if you:

-want a larger screen (~10% is not a small amount!)
-think you will use the kickstand (it is quite handy)
-want a thinner phone in your pocket
-Like HTC sense or want the CM6 ROM right now!!! :-)

So I got my Epic yesterday and man..this thing is smooth. You guys are right...even with froyo, fps unlocked, and cpu overclocked Evo, it can't compare. Just fyi my Evo gets sometimes 1500+ quadrant, usually 31 fps on Neocore, and usually 15 fps on Nenamark. Playing Dungeon Hunter is smooth on the Epic. Qauke2 is also playable specially with the keyboard. Quake2 on my Evo is choppy and sound breaks up a lot and can't really be played without a physical keyboard. I'm very impressed with the Epic. I was really hoping I wouldn't like it, but now I have a decision to make.

So to answer my own post...Evo on steroid doesn't compare to Epic.
