EVO Static During Phone Calls

I think this is either an issue with the speaker or some type of software audio boost gone wrong. It only happens when the volume is near max for me. As soon as I crank it down, it's gone.

When you turn it down you can't really hear it, but if you put your head right next to the speaker, you can hear just a slight static. I am just wondering how mine can go from perfect to the static, and all because of the update, at least that is what it seems to me, or a great big coincidence. Unless, I really never listen for it before. Could it be a software issue, not hardware. Can that speaker really blow at max volume?

Mine did this out of the box. I was going to exchange it, but the place I got it from was out of replacements. Plus, I didn't want to risk it with people talking about getting the phones with the screen separations.

Nothing else about my phone is wrong. If this is only slight static, I can live with it. You are right, if you trade it in you could get a lot worse. I had that problem with the Pre last year, went through 5 as they got worse each time. I should of stayed with the first, but there was a small blotching problem. After that it got worse till I finally got a decent one at number 5. The EVO I have is pretty good otherwise. So I guess I will live with it.

I bought my Evo on June 4th, I had been using a Plantronics Discovery 975 headset without any issues. After the update, I started getting static on the headset. I can only hear the static on my end and it goes from being really bad to just mildly annoying. I have two Discovery 975 Headsets and both get the same static sounds.

I tried pairing the headset to a few other phones and there was zero static. I went into the Sprint Store and paired my headset to their demo Evo and there was static. I tried pairing my Blue Parriot Road Warrior headset to my Evo, the connection was very clear and without static.

The Sprint store technicans were puzzled and had no resolution to the issue. They tried turning off the 4G, but that proved not to help. So, the conclusion that I have come to is there must have been some type of interference created by the latest update. It seems that the only solution is to find a headset that works with the HTC EVO. It is a real shame because the Plantronics 975 is a great headset, pairs easily, and there isn't another headset that offers the rechargable/recharging case.

If anyone has any solutions, I would sure love to know!

Am I the only one without static on either the phone or bluetooth?
My call quality is exceptional, zero complaints.

Improve CDMA call quality by changing Vocoder settings

My Evo's call quality sucks too.

Have you tried changing the vocoder settings under ##DATA# ? Your MSL is needed for this.

Goto Phone
Dial ##3282#
Choose "Edit Mode"
Enter MSL
Vocoder (Enable)
EVRC-B (Enable)
Home Orig (EVRC-B)
Roam Orig (EVRC-B)

I had done this on both my Hero and my new Evo and it seems to help with call quality. I'm sure that this has been posted elsewhere on this and every other forum, I'm not trying to take credit for it in any way. I learned the vocoder trick for CDMA phones back when I worked for Verizon. Enjoy!

This would also be the time to change the Slot Cycle Index should you wish, but it may have a negative affect battery life should you select lower then 2. The slot cycle is the time that the phone communicates with the cell towers.

i had this issue out of the box. I called today and the HTC EVO tech "flipped the chart" as he said and sent a refresh. No more aggravating static noises to hear. My phone quality is awesome now....

Who did you contact?

I'm having this same issue, and I'm glad to hear it was a simple fix, but who exactly did you contact in order to get this done? Sprint or HTC?

Thanks!

Update on this issue

So I contacted Sprint tech support first and the base level tech had never heard of 'flipping the chart' but he said he could send a 'refresh' - which he did.

Then he connected me with a higher level tech that also hadn't heard of "flipping the chart" and she said that it may be something only HTC techs were capable of doing.

SO she then directed me to HTC's tech support (866-449-8358) to whom I explained the situation (and cited this forum) . This tech informed me that they have no way to push any sort of 'refresh' to the phone at all and that's something only Sprint could do. In fact, the only option on his end would be to do a hard refresh (which is basically to reload the stock Froyo ROM).

A couple of bits of information for anyone experiencing the same thing:

I'm running the EVO 4G on Sprint in St. Louis (MO) and have it rooted using Unrevoked3.21

Following the root i installed one of the Netarchy kernels which unlocked my FPS cap (and also attenuated the audio - which might be the cause of the problem).

I'll keep testing and post my results here.
