Evo vs. Pre - Headset Port

I'll keep this short, since I could easily reach "TL;DR" status on this subject.

- I am on my 3rd (and about to be 4th) Pre.
- This is no fault of my own.
- Each time, the fail is because of the crappy headphone jack.
- This time, it thinks I still have a headset plugged in.. and I dont.
- This means that now, I have to either use my Bluetooth headset or else speakerphone until I can get a replacement

Question:

Has anyone that has an Evo already tried using and stress-testing the headphone jack? Could someone plug/unplug a pair of headphones a few times.. just to be sure that the phone doesn't break?

I've already decided I'm getting the Evo. I'm almost sure that this is only a Palm issue and the Evo will be fine. I just hope that someone here can ease my fear that the Evo's headset port might fail too.

Help??

This is a Pre issue only (I have gone through 3 myself) from what I can tell. Never owned a HTC phone that had any issues like this. The pre is notorious for terrible hardware.

That's actually a software issue for the Pre, and there is a fix that can be applied. I encountered the same issue as well. There's a fix lurking around somewhere the Precentral forums.

That being said, I think your fear for the HTC phones to have the same issue--while reasonable--is unfounded. HTC phones (made in Taiwan at the Foxconn facility... Foxconn is, incidently, the OEM for iPhones) are better quality than the made in China POS OEM that Palm uses. All my previous HTC phones have been solid as tanks. This isn't to say that an Evo wouldn't have problems, but I think it is highly unlikely this same problem would persist for you.

I have a Pre myself (only for another couple days). I've gone though 5 already and my wife has gone through 3. Most of the swaps were for different reasons. Palm learned a lot about hardware construction and fixed most of the issues in the Plus version of the phone. As for the EVO, most can't say that they've tested its durability because no one has had it long enough. What I can say is HTC has a long list of successful phones under their belt. They know a thing or two about constructing a phone. Unless they truly biffed, one need not worry.

Here is the fix you were talking about from the precentral forums.

Every palm phone i have owned....treo 600...treo 650...treo 680....treo 755p all had crappy phone jacks. I remember having to take my 650 apart and soldering it back together. Palm you will be missed but not that much. EVO EVO EVO!!!

Mine did that once. Stayed stuck in headset mode. I was confused as to why it wouldn't let me here anything out of the phone's speaker.

i had this problem also on my pre. On a side note how is the mp3 playback on the evo for those of you all that have it. I liked the pre. I have an ipod now but would like to turn the evo into my new on the go music player.

Am I the only person who managed to make it a full year - bought my Pre on launch day - who still has that original Pre? Other than the flimsy USB door falling off after 9 months and a crack by the USB slot, I've had NONE of the problems that seem to have plagued so many others. No Oreoing, no flashlighting, no loose battery or sticking pixels and keyboards. Wild. I'm just fed up with the laggy, pokey performance and chronic TMC errors. Too bad, Palm, I was a believer.

Yeah I sent in my Pre the first time it happened to me back in September last year. I have sent my Pre back in 3 times overall.
Since then there has been a fix...

But I doubt HTC hardware will have issues that are not already known.

No I still have my original Pre but it is on it's last leg. I had the headphone jack problem but I just took a q-tip and cleaned out the inside and it fixed it. Though I never used the headphone jack again because I didn't want it to happen again. Now I have a problem that if you move your phone or even if a breeze comes through while it is charging, it will start flipping back and forth between charging and not. Also the other day it randomly decided to format itself and I lost everything! Great how the Palm back-up worked for me! LOL Can't wait for the Evo. Only 2 more days!

had the same headphone jack problem, it happen when I was calling my family to tell them me and my wife were having a girl. Me and my dad played phone tag till I figured it out, never buying palm again

I have my original Pre from shortly after launch day and it's solid, other than slight oreo effect (which admittedly did not get worse over time for me). I know I'm probably in the minority, but I've been happy with my Pre. I've had the headphone jack issue a couple times and random lag here and there, but happy overall.

But the EVO will be in my hands in a couple days so the Pre will be old news. Go EVO!!!

BTW, last night was the first time ever that I'd even tried the headphones as I listened to Dr. Podder while walking. I've never really used it as a media phone and if I did play anything back, it was thru my car's Bluetooth Sync system.

I still have my original Pre and no problems. I am very carefull With my phone and lives in innocase with screen in on holster then my pocket. When i get my evo the pre is going to my husband to replace his instinct. My daughter who is much harder on phones than me still has her original pre. Guess just lucky. Cant wait for friday

Thanks to everyone for the responses.. I definitely feel a lot better. Can't wait for the Evo!!

Side Note: My replacement Pre is expected in to the store on Friday.. (original plan is to wait a couple of weeks to make sure no other glaring issues pop up, such as the reversed image on the front cam and the SD card problem, before I buy).. hmm but what are the chances of me walking out of the store with JUST my replacement Pre?? haha

I have had my Pre since launch day and I'm missing the usb cover and the volume buttons are broken(which I overcame with a patch). Other than that I'm just fed up with the lag.
