Face unlock works when your eyes are closed (ugh)

It opens every time regardless, whenever you look directly at your phone. I read that Apple has a further swipe up required after it unlocks, but Pixel unlocks opens up immediately.

There is a setting on the P4 that gives you the choice whether face unlock takes you directly to your home screen or if you need to swipe up on the lock screen.

Yeah... I checked into it. That can probably be changed but not sure I have an issue with something like that. It's not much difference than having smart unlock on.

The problem from one reviewer, was that when it unlocks inadvertently by you looking at it (like to check the time or see who an incoming message is from on the lock screen), that requires you to then physically lock the phone by pushing the power button.

I often look at my phone for the time or read/delete messages from lock screen or screen calls while its locked, so it would be kind of a nuisance if the phone fully opens every time instead.

That's why I'm glad I'm out this time. There's too many question marks. Hopefully that will change with time.

But who doesn't lock their phone or turn off their phone by using the power button when they're done using it.

You have the option to have the phone unlock to the home screen or to the lock screen.

I'm not sure I follow. In my example, I have no intention of unlocking, simply looking at the time, then putting it back down. Or clicking ignore to a phone call. Or swiping a new message away. All from the lock screen remaining locked. With my Pixel 3, i'm done.

However, with Pixel 4, now that screen is unlocked and open without me wanting it, I then have the extra step to press the power button to relock it.

Yes but if you pick up just to look at the time or just to swipe away a message, etc when it face unlocks you can have it set to remain on the lock screen and not go to the home screen automatically. When you put your phone down you can just have the phone lock after 15 seconds or just press the power key. If you're putting your phone back in your pocket you're going to press the power key to shut it off unless you like putting your phone back in your pocket while it's turned on. I honestly just don't see the issue you're trying make in your example.
