Fed up with AT&T Thinking of Changing to...

This. Cutting down only allows it to fit. Doesn't change anything else. OP still needs to root and find a tethering app.

Nexus 6P

Cutting down to what I already have a nano SIMs, can not cut it down there would be nothing. Iwill wait for the option to unlock and root root to come available for the N6P using WugFresh then root the N6P.

Re:

First, Verizon is the only one to offer unlimited unthrottled un optimized 4GLTE data on their legacy plan. All the other carriers subject you to optimization when in high load situations after meeting certain data usage thresholds.

Secondly, Verizon is the only one to offer unlimited unthrottled un optimized 4GLTE hotspot officially on any Verizon 4glte device. Other carriers might allow it on certain devices or certain hacks, but there is no official unlimited unthrottled 4GLTE hotspot. Keep in mind that this is a legacy plan...

And you can put it on and take it off at any time. I tried to take it off and put it on earlier this month and it still worked.

Just to be clear, they charge.
The issue here is tethering without charge.

Verizon only supports tethering without charge on their tiered plans or if you pull your SIM and put it in a HotSpot device.

They do charge for the feature (like most features). You said they do not officially support it but they definitely do.

Correct. But keep in mind that Verizon is the only carrier to offer unlimited unthrottled un optimized 4GLTE hotspot as an official option. Other carriers don't even offer this as an option on their current or legacy plans.

Using work arounds is a violation of the terms of service, and violation of the terms of service can result in termination. Verizon hasn't done it yet, but they can... And I personally don't want to risk it.

Re:

If you're happy with AT&T's coverage and speeds, consider switching to Cricket. It's AT&T's network, but at less than half the price. I have a Nexus 4 and Cricket, and I've never had problems tethering.

That said, I don't tether for hours or GB at a time, which might trigger Cricket to block the connection. If you're willing to consider Cricket, start a thread to see what other customers (regardless of phone model) have to say about tethering. Good luck.

I was on Cricket for over a year and was never able to get tethering to work (Nexus 5 and 6) - I would always get the same "Contact your provider" message whenever I tried to enable it. I asked Cricket about it and they said flat out that they do not permit tethering and could not offer it even if I was willing to pay for it.

And, by the way, no VPN with Cricket, either...

I have a 6P with an old Verizon unlimited plan and the phone allows me to generate a hotspot. I don't know why as I do not pay extra for this feature. On my M7 I used FoxFi. On my Nexus 6 I had to root and edit the build.prop file. I inserted the following text at the end of the file: net.tethering.no provisioning=true. That allowed me to generate a hotspot.

Interesting. So there must be something in the N4 that gets around that restriction.

It's the other way around; I think something was added to the N5 and on-wards that specifically checks for tethering/hotspot permission.

What OS version is your N4 running?

Re:

Whatever you do, don't give away your unlimited plan. You live in an RV and travel around the country so you need unlimited. Do the tethering exploit after rooting:

(Although, I personally wouldn't unlock unless they have a way of un-rooting and putting the lock back in place in case you need to send it back to Google.)

WugFresh update released today, see my post here.

Re:

Ah. There you go. I'd do that. ^^^^

I tried that last night and it did not work. It wound up soft-bricking my device, it now will not boot past the Google splash screen with the lock. I did some research and checked out this site, click here for link. I will down load all the necessary file and try that today.

Ah there you go. I would NOT use that site! LOL

Re:

Get a nano to micro SIM adapter, and put the SIM back in the 5 when you need to tether?

That is the first thing I did, that was a joke a new sims and it would not stay in the adapter long enough to put in the phone. I was not about to use it.

Edit: I have restores the OS and now have a working phone. I then rooted the phone and upgraded to the latest Google Factory Build as well.

I am now able to tether using two different options. For the first option I have edited the build.prop file by adding the following to the end of the file. net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
This worked for me and I can use the built in tethering option just like I did on the nexus 5.

I also try the second second option using the app called Wi-Fi Tether Router. The second option works quite well also.

Would T-mobile work in your area? Not sure of the cost comparison on unlimited, but they allow tethering. I've had great reception in socal, ks, OK, and az. I thought att and tmus used same tech.
