FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited data

I think it's unfair for VZW to take unlimited away from grandfathered customers. Doesn't the signed contract guarantee us our unlimited data? Why is VZW free to change the rules in the middle of the game? The contract seems to protect VZW while obligating the paying customer.

I called vzw about my contract. I have an altell contract I signed back in 08

Once Verizon does this, I'm using it as them breaking my contract(So I won't have to pay the ETF) and jumping ship to GSM. I refuse have my wallet abused further by a dumb pipe(who doesn't want to be a dumb pipe).

I feel you on that and I sure will be doing the same thing.

Everyone should flood vzw call center about this unlimited data :p
We should set a time for us all to do it at the same time so it puts a big load on their call center lol

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

It is NOT clear that this will affect those of us already on LTE devices with grandfathered unlimited data. As the CFO stated, this will affect those currently on a 3G only device upgrading to an LTE one. So until I hear some clear evidence to the contrary, I'm not ready to get my pitchfork out yet (not that I would anyway, keep reading). If anything this sounds like their plan for when the new LTE iPhone hits to get those people off unlimited 3G. Also, these new tiered SHARED plans may help those with multiple phones save money where they can spread one shared data plan across all phones instead of paying for a data plan for each individual phone.

Regardless of it all, I would expect at some point that everyone will be forced off unlimited into a tiered plan. All good things must come to an end… When that does happen, I'll still stay with Verizon as they are the ONLY carrier where I live with decent coverage, not to mention the corporate discount I get through work. Unlimited data is nice for the times I use a lot of data, typically during football season streaming games, but even then I rarely went over 2-3GB in a month, so even on a tiered plan, I’d still be fine. It would still suck to lose the peace of mind of not having to worry about overages, but again, I’d be crazy to leave Verizon as they provide the best bang for my buck. YMMV. :)

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I'm considering upgrading to an LTE phone/plan right now even though LTE isn't active in my location so that I can get my unlimited data grandfathered in before they make this change.

Of course, I'm sure they'll find a way to force me into a shared data plan somewhere down the line, but I'd like to keep unlimited data as long as I can.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

My thoughts exactly. My friends near me have dropped calls with Sprint but deal with it for the price. I used to have T-Mobile but switched to Verizon as the savings were not worth it. I had ATT a long time ago but left due to bad service and it hasn't gotten better. Besides, ATT isn't any cheaper than Verizon and I'd have problems. No thank you...

Agreed, I had Sprint, in my last area their network was ok, but where I live now it is terrible. Could not even make a call from my house. I have friends with Sprint smart phones and their data speed is a joke, might as well be throttled all the time. I hear it is good in some areas of the country, but in my area it is bad.

They said the change would happen at contract renewal time. So if you don't want the new Verizon contract you will be free to walk when you current contract expires. At least currently they don't plan to make changes like AT&T did in the middle of their contract cycle.

Do the companies that make streaming apps (netflix, Pandora etc) that use data have a say in this? You think they'd be pissed.

I'm completely against killing off unlimited data. I've read over the year or so that people are using 10-50gb a month streaming tv shows, music, netflix etc. If your doing all that maybe you should buy a home Internet connection. Unlimited data has never truly been unlimited and now Verizon is just enforcing their policies. I've used 5gb once or twice and average around 3gb. It's those that are download bittorrents, and using 50gb a month abusing the system while us more reasonable people who have home Internet or use wifi when doing a heavy load suffer. I also realize Verizon encourage all this by teasing us with lte and netflix.

Yes i know its the principle of Verizon changing the plan. I know i just pissed a few people off.

Sorry just venting the free ride is over. Eventually home Internet will go tierd as well.

I doubt it's torrenting. More people use Youtube, Netflix, Hulu, and other video services on their phones.

No I've read some have donr torrents, I agree likely hood is slim. I do think if your watching that many movies maybe you should get a roku. A friend of mine streams pandora all day and uses about 3 a month.

I doubt the slim number that actually do torrenting on their phones caused unlimited to go away.

Streaming video is more likely the culprit.

Then probably streaming audio.

A Roku wouldn't do me any good. If I'm watching on my phone, I'm more likely to be not in a Wi-Fi area. Also, I don't really connect to Wi-Fi at coffee shops anymore, since LTE is much faster.

This. I'm due for an upgrade and my Droid 2 is gasping its last breaths. I'm annoyed to learn that, as a long-time customer with multiple lines, I'll pay $30 more for my next contract than a new customer. So much for appreciating loyalty. I've been hoping to get my phone to limp along till the fighter/razr maxx HD comes out, even though there's no LTE in my area yet, but now it looks like the timing of this switch to tiered data is going to drive my schedule. AT&T's customer service pissed me off about 15 years ago over a $250 bill, and I calculated last year that it has cost them almost $40k since then. I'm hoping to not throw Verizon out onto the same trash heap, but I pay more than enough for my current services and am not interested in a price hike of substantial consequence.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I don't beleive Verizon will or can cut existing unlimited customers in the middle of a contract.

When my contract is up and it's time for a new phone this bs will supposedly be in place.
It's time for us grandfathered data individuals to express our opinions to Verizon.

You gotta love how the carriers ruin smartphones, what is the point of having smartphones without the data that's needed to take advantage of their capabilities?

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I just checked my 5 lines usage. I have 4 days left in my billing cycle.

Now considering I pay $150/month ($30/line) for data this is what I use:

Line 1: 1.93 GB
Line 2: 0.37 GB
Line 3: 0.08 GB
Line 4: 0.07 GB
Line 5: 1.76 GB

So go ahead Verizon offer shared data. Hell, I can take a 10GB/$100 month plan and come out saving me $50 a month and have plenty of data.

Sure they will make money off some people but I am willing to bet the majority of people are similar to me and actually Verizon stands to LOSE money on switching those people.
If I have to goto a shared data plan I'm screwed.

  1. 0.271GB (U/L Data)
  2. 0.00 (no data plan at all)
  3. 4.916GB (U/L Data)
  4. 0.022GB (Tiered Data)

I have 23 days left in my billing cycle....

So if I don't ever use an upgrade on my line or my wife's line we can keep our unlimited data? I have a GN so I have unlimited 4G, but she has a G'zOne Commando so that is iffy....

Sadly, its that way will all carriers :(

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I just got an email back from the FCC. While they can't directly influence Verizon's pricing, they can put terms on the spectrum they license. They can tie them into commitments to make them more consumer friendly, etc. They said people should file a complaint on their website.

File Complaint | FCC.gov

Remember, right now Verizon is attempting to gain access to some important spectrum.

You can also email daniel.mead@verizonwireless.com and let him know we aren't taking this lightly.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I think we need to take a step back on this and review. It looks like this is all in the initial planning stages yet. Also, there is nothing specific about how these proposed shared tiered plans may impact those of us that already have LTE phones with grandfathered unlimited data.

Check out the transcript from the Investor Conference here:
Investor Relations

From page five of the transcript, talking about the new shared data plans:
Phil Cusick - JPMorgan Chase - Analyst
How do you drive customers over to this new model? Is there a willingness to take a little bit of near-term pain on revenue in exchange for the higher device number that is going to drive growth long term?

Fran Shammo - Verizon Communications Inc. - EVP & CFO
Well, the way we have designed this and of course, it is paper, not actual and we will see how this comes out, but the way we have designed this is we really shouldn't see a short-term decline. And really the theory behind this is LTE is our anchor point for data share. So as you come through an upgrade cycle and you upgrade in the future, you will have to go onto the data share plan. And moving away from, if you will, the unlimited world and moving everybody into a tiered structure data share-type plan. So when you think about our 3G base, a lot of our 3G base is unlimited. As they start to migrate into 4G, they will have to come off of unlimited and go into the data share plan.

Statement on Data Plans
Data Pricing

As we have stated publicly, Verizon Wireless has been evaluating its data pricing structure for some time. Customers have told us that they want to share data, similar to how they share minutes today. We are working on plans to provide customers with that option later this year.

We will share specific details of the plans and any related policy changes well in advance of their introduction, so customers will have time to evaluate their choices and make the best decisions for their wireless service. It is our goal and commitment to continue to provide customers with the same high value service they have come to expect from Verizon Wireless.

Which option for the complaint?

This is nothing more than an, "Uh oh, We F*cked up and people are pissed" statement.

Does anybody really think they are just in the initial stages of trying to offer something customers have asked for and are doing us a favor??? If so, think again.

Hopefully the person who wrote that little blurb understands the English language. Option connotes...alternatives. Thus, data sharing should be optional, and we should be able to maintain our own lines with our own data limits.
