Finally caught up! 4.2.2 (JDQ39)

Do you need root or need to unlock the boot loader to load just the radios? When I flashed 4.2.2 OTA update using Nexus Root Toolkit I didn't have to unlock the boot loader nor root so I didn't have to re-install all my apps and data.
I am unlocked and rooted so I don't know if you can do it without being unlocked and rooted. Ask on the GNex rooting forum. Someone there should be able to answer.

I am not rooted but I am unlocked and was able to install the leak easily. I will say that the radio's on this build suck. On the previous stock OS I would have 5 bars of signal at my house but now only get 1 bar. I will see if I can find different radio's to install to fix the issue. This could be the reason why Verizon has not officially released it. By the way I used the galaxy nexus toolkit to unlock and restart the bootloader. I simply downloaded the zip file, copy and dragged it onto my phone, restarted the booldoader into recovery, then selected to install from sd card using my phone. I then selected no when it asked to make it permanent where I could not erase it. Restarted the phone and worked great. I used this method on two phones.

Update: Use Galaxy Nexus Toolkit
Start the Toolkit and hit #16
Next hit #3. If this wont start working shut off your phone hold both volume buttons and power button. After you are in the bootloader then hit #3
After phone is unlocked power it back off like in step 2. Start at step one by hitting #16
Then hit #10
Then select #1 boot into recovery using clockword mod
Then use the volume button to select install from sd card. select by using power button
Scroll until you see the zip file you copied and pasted on the phone
It the power button to select and let it install
after install just keep hitting go back until you see restart the phone and it will be done.

I was having same experience with new radios too, poor reception, wouldn't go back to 4G once it reverted to 3G. Since I didn't want to unlock the bootloader and have to re-install everything I wasn't able to go back on just the radios. Must say though that after about 72 hrs it seems to have settled down and reception is probably back to were it was pre-installation. Not sure of why this occurs, perhaps they are still upgrading the towers or it takes a while for the new radios to adapt or there is still something in the cache that causes this? Not familiar enough with cell phone radio technology to know.

Thanks to El Madhatter and oldblue910 from XDA forums! Saw this link over at the XDA forums and leads to the instructions and 4.2.2 file (for those with rooted devices). I personally haven't downloaded or installed it because my device isn't rooted, but is unlocked. The post also does note that they are working on non-root install instructions. Fingers crossed! I hope it works for everyone! :D

*Update: Non-rooted instructions have been added*

Thanks for posting this. I have friends looking to update their phones, since they have started using unlocked cellphones. The wireless service we use seems to have little information on upgrades. The service is so new, they are struggling to keep up with new customer support, let alone deal with any tech questions of this nature.

I'm trying to flash the update via adb sideload, but I can't push the file to my phone with the sideload. I have adb open, it recognizes the device, I go to the bootloader, then recovery, select the sideload option, type the command into the adb, and it just says:

"error: device not found".

Anyone have a solution for this? I've installed the Galaxy Nexus toolkit from XDA and the drivers.

I somewhat had this problem. I deleted my previous drivers and reinstalled them again using the instructions from the toolkit. After reinstalling them, I rebooted my laptop and proceeded with the sideload. See if reinstalling them and rebooting your computer works for you.
