Fingerprint biometrics on this phone drives me nuts!

Yeah...everyone has a different experience. My Note and S series up through the 20s inscreen FPS were and are pretty reliable.
I didn't have any issue since they introduce the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor but it can cause issues for people and I believe it's from the individual as I watched through the Forums when introduced. Hopefully they can build one that can be more forgiving with certain fingerprint and secure in the future.

Indeed. It doesn't work well for everyone, I've definitely seen some complaints. Tocol was very helpful with suggestions and a video showing the installation and settings for their screen protectors, and I love that they used a centering frame for the install. Made that task just - Zip - done. Since my screen came pre-scratched, I wanted protection to prevent more. A nice, smotth screen just makes the experience better.

Update, had a little bit of fun with it shortly after I installed the protector. Reading reliability dropped sharply. But, being the persistent SOB I am, I began playing with the reader, and made an accidental discovery that has brought my unlock rate back to par with my Note 9. I started "rocking" my finger a little bit, and voila! It started unlocking more reliably than just placing my finger on the scanner did. It may be worth a shot, see if it helps, it really made a difference for me.

These 3 pro tips made a huge difference for me with the FPS:

1. Remove the factory-installed screen protector.

2. Keep your fingertips well-hydrated. Dry and cracking fingerprints change on a daily basis and are the biggest cause of failed authentications. IMO, moisturize for a week then redo your fingerprints and experience a huge difference! (And then keep them well-moistened.)

3. Instead of scanning each finger as a separate, well, finger, scan multiple finger tips as part of "fingerprint 1", "fingerprint 2", etc.

Step 3 is pretty ingenious - never would have thought of that!

In my opinion, they are the worst of any phone I have had. At least 50 percent of the time, not one of my four prints works. Very disappointing. I also miss the iris scan in Samsung Pay.

I like it better than my N10. If my finger is clean, I generally have no problem.

Mine never gave me issue....but had hard time with tempered glass installed......I went to pattern and pin...
then I was lucky enough to find uv light tempered glass with finger print working ...and had oleophobic coating....now my finger print works and screen touch feel like factory quality

When I eat my Cheetos, I can't log in. Have to lick my fingers clean then wipe them on my pants, I hate orange streaks on my black pants. What a pain. BTW, have glue-on tempered glass screen protector. My Note 9 FPS was perfect.

I suggest using different hands for eating and using your phone. For your phone's sake (and your pants, for that matter!)

So your Note 9 FPS worked with Cheetos before or after you licked your fingers?

My Note 9 was Cheetos resistant. Of course licking your fingers warms them up and my Note 20U likes freshly licked fingers. I also warm my worms when fishing. Those fish go into a frenzy over freshly warmed worms.

Are the Doritos resistant also ?

Frankly. They just need to put a fingerprint scanner on the side power button. Sony had some this before. The new Fold 3 has this. Not only would it be more reliable, it's more comfortable to use in most scenarios.

Agree to disagree; if my phone is laying on my desk I would have to pick it up for the side or rear FPS. With under display, I just press with a finger and it is unlocked.

I missed the rear FPS when I traded my Note 9 for the Note 20 Ultra, but fast forward a year and I love it.

I think the key was when I realized the White Stone Dome was making the FPS unreliable... I also realized that I was spending as much on a screen protector as a screen replacement would cost with insurance.

Added bonus, I got rid of the horrible screen protector edges that annoyed me both for looks, and swiping in from the edges.

Went on a what we call in the UK "a job". Needed an ID on a person. It was a very warm day and the adrenaline was flowing along with the sweat. FP worked perfectly. Job done. FP and face recog: works pretty good in my opinion.

Until you've actually used a side mounted fingerprint scanner, it's really hard to describe how convenient it really is. I had the Sony Z5 Compact. It was an international model so it had a working scanner. I never had to pick it up to scan my finger. Didn't have to reach around back. I could have it on a flat surface or in a dock. Most times, I would simply be holding the phone the way I normally do and simply place my finger right on the sensor. With the in screen scanner, of I have it on a wireless charging pad that doesn't support the bottom, the phone may move when I try to use the scanner. Not an issue with the side mounted scanner.
