Fingerprint Scanner Not Working Well

The FPS is an effin joke, works roughly 50% of the time. Registered and re-registered same finger twice, removed screen protector and what not. Samsung support gave me their "update coming/dry skin/learning curve" spiel. Where's the learning curve on Note 9, S9? What a sham. Just kills me when I need to access phone fast and have to keep pressing this BS thing. Returning tomorrow.
I can empathize. I got the BOGO deal. On one unit the fps worked acceptably after it received an update. The other never received the update and the fps was a not-even half-working PITA. I exchanged that one and the replacement is great. Both the ones that now work great are the 512GB ceramic models.

Exchange yours for a replacement or just forego the S10 series for now. Sammy will continue to iron out the bugs.

EDITED: Because my brain is faster than my fingers.

Not sure how some users are getting great results with adding additional finger prints. That was the first thing I did actually because it was something I did with all my past Galaxy phones to improve recognition. The "quick tap" has never worked once for me. Always get the "keep your finger on the sensor a little longer" or "press harder". Sensitivity is turned up and Sammy screen protector is still on. Guess I'll keep fiddling with the finger prints..

I can always confirm that when I wash my hands thoroughly and any natural skin oils are fully washed off, the FPS becomes almost useless. There's been periods of time where it will not read any fingerprint nor can I re-add new ones. This only happens when my hands are super clean. Once they collect keyboard grease and residues it works "better". I can recreate this effect on demand. I guess I have less finger print with a clean thumb lol.

Did you do the settings and read the other posts of what other have said to do? Or did you just post to complain?
I tried all options suggested in this thread and FPS is still hit-or-miss. I will return the device and get a Note 9 for now.

Okay so I did this. Been using it for almost a day with these settings above and it works really good. I used it right after I washed my hands and when my hands were dry and oily. So, I recommend doing what I quoted above.

I changed my display settings touch sensitivity to work with screen protectors and it's been fine. I would not recommend changing pointer or mouse speed settings because that impacts other things and could produce undesirable results. Glad it's working for you.

Are you within your buyer's remorse return window? If so, exchange it. Yes the tech is new, but it most definitely should not be that frustrating...which is exactly why I got a new one. Having to register and re-register your fingerprint a gazillion times isn't acceptable, along with trying to make sure your fingers are not too dry...too wet. Nope.

My replacement works great. Is it perfect? Nope, but almost. Do I wish I had the FPS on the S9? Yep. BUT the ultrasonic FPS wasn't a factor in my purchase decision.
Thanks, I will return the device and get Note 9 for now. Exchanging the unit is a good option, but I want to avoid yet another trip to the store afterwards. What if my finger is "oily enough" for the FPS to work in the store and then back to 50% success rate after I wash my hands.

After a week my success rate with the FPS has gone from 90% to about 80%. Still not enough to make me hate it but I wish it was better.

Well I know it can be a PITA but if it were more likely that you'd receive another lemon I think we'd have full-blown 'fps-gate'. I think most users are able to get their fps issues resolved via methodology or exchanging the phone but the Note 9 is an awesome phone too. I had the unlocked silverish 512GB version recently for a couple of days and really liked it. ...but I'm not much of an SPen user and I am loving these S10+'s more and more every day.

Good luck!!

Just love standing at the register trying to use Samsung pay and have to scan my fingerprint 6-7 times before I finally get success. Hope Samsung can fix this crap with a future software update.

Maybe the Note 10 will come with a Gen 2 FPS that actually works.

My S10+ works flawlessly. That sucks that so many people are having issues. I'd be pissed if mine wasn't working properly.

I had a terrible time with the S10+ and returned the phone to BestBuy because of the problems I was having with the fingerprint sensor. Still wanted the phone and was having a few nagging issues with my V30 that I wanted to alleviate. Decided to try the S10 since I figured the size was still really good and it's easier to pull down the top panel one handed than it is on the S10+. Anyhow, since buying the S10 the fingerprint sensor has been working great for me. No joke - great. I did remove the flimsy included screen protector, not sure if that had any affect. I'm thinking the smaller profile of the S10 allows me to position my thumb correctly much more easily. That, and I guess I just got used to it. There's also a degree of not touching and lifting off too quickly which is something you get used to and makes it work much better. I saw Samsung had sent out a message committing to improving the FP sensor with software updates after they received a number of complaints. Hopefully that will help to make it even better. But right now I'd say I have a very very high success rate as is. I just now tested picking up my phone off my desk and unlocking it 10x total (5x each hand/thumb) and it unlocked all 10x no problem whatsoever. Not doubting any of you guys having issues though - as I mentioned it was so bad on the S10+ I bought that I returned it.

Rev.

Not sure if Samsung pushed an update in the background, but my fingerprint reader has dramatically improved in the last 24 hours. I'd say twice as fast and almost 100% accurate.

Re: Relax and Just Use Face Recognition

Update...since this post I have kept my thumbs clean enough to lick them and have had exactly 100% success. I am back to having both thumbs registered twice. If you can do that use condensation off a glass or whatever. I can't see carrying lotion but obviously anything other than dry skin works. Must be like using that lubricant for a sonogram to transfer the sound waves or something.

Me too but still need FPS for some apps. I have one thumb registered 4 times. I can't carry lotion everywhere but I have found that it is MUCH more accurate if I lick my thumb first. Kinda' have to keep my hand clean now :-)

This makes no sense at all to me...

"Alternate your thumbs as you are scanning one fingerprint"

It doesn't help despite the hype. Someone came up with that idea so they could incorporate a lot more fingers/people into the device.

My FPS scanner was working perfect this morning, this afternoon back in the toilet. :(

well I got my phone on Tuesday and I'm afraid to try doing the fingerprint scanner and then I might not do it good. so for now I'm just double-tapping and I was swiping up to unlock and now I just set up face and I know it's not that secure but I may try fingerprint here over the weekend when I have more time to mess with it. My husband claims he hasn't had a problem with his.
