Face unlock on 8 Pro needs light and doesn't work in dimly lit light. It's not like the iPhone face ID which works everywhere.

FWIW it works great when there is enough light.

Yes it has been working this morning. It definitely needs light. Overall I am happy to even have it at all cos my 6 Pro didn't have the option.
