For those who want the second GB update/patch

I decided to format my phone... and it updated. So, I guess that's one way of doing it. It's a pain to do it that way, but I suppose it is an option.

I got the big update the other night on two phones, and the small update this morning on one. Everything went smooth on them all so far. It sounds like I'm the lucky one after reading this thread!

Add me to the lucky list...mine went very smoothly. Sorry to everyone who is having a hard time.

For those with the low space....

I did the following:

UNISTALLED :
Adobe Flash - Unistalled the updates
Google Earth - Unistalled completely

CLEAR CACHE and DATA:
Facebook - Cleared both
Facebook for HTC Sense - Cleared both
Mail - Cleared both (you will have to reset up mail)

Once these were done, I had zero issue installing and all seems good.

How much space did that leave you with available?

same problem as everyone else. 1st update message failed because it said i didn't have enough memory. freed up a bunch of stuff, forced the update and now it won't reboot. this sucks

What a mess. Ever since I got the GB update 2 days ago all I've done is uninstall apps and clear data to keep the recurring "Low space error" away. Anytime I have that error I can't receive email or messages, so it's not really an option to ignore the error. Then I get the patch update and it won't install because there isn't enough space (I have loads of space BTW, but HTC seems to think otherwise).

What is the point in having a smartphone (I use the term loosely) if I can't have any apps installed on it?

I've been fairly happy with HTC and my phone until now. Does anyone know if new(er) HTC phones have this low space issue? Because I will not buy another HTC if this hasn't been fixed.

Didn't work for me ugh this is starting to piss me off.

For all of you who updated, did you also do the initial update? Anyone here not do the initial GB update, or will this not work without it?

I tried method 1 and 2, no luck. Other posts I've read this morning say that Verizon pulled the update. Guess we get to wait...again.

So when the patch wouldn't reboot my phone I just set the date back to default and left it alone. About an hour later the update popped up again on its own. I tried to install it and got the same reboot hang. This is so ed.

I've actually got the Patch update to reappear about 3 more times since it first failed from low space. Problem is, when I click Install Now, it starts the countdown to reboot and after about 1 second appears to click the Cancel button. Almost like the clicking of Install Now carries through to the next screen and clicks Cancel also.

I just want to YELL the F word right now...too bad I need my job.

So, I can do a restart (bottom option in the power key menu) that clears temp files from memory, increment the system date by one day over what it was on the last attempt, and do the checkin (*#*#checkin#*#*) and get prompted with the small update again and again. Each time, I tell it to install now, and it counts down until "reboot" and then stops there. Somebody forgot to test that the thing could actually reboot the phone. LOL

I have done this over a dozen times (with the last time being just a few minutes ago). I don't think they pulled the update... it just doesn't work.

Hey all.. my first post here.. i'm a bit confused as to what's going on.. yesterday woke up, said an update was ready.. I installed it. Looks like i got gingerbread. Then last night got another popup saying there was an update.. i ran that one, it rebooted but told me there wasn't enough space.

Now i'm trying to set my clock ahead.. (this isn't getting me that 2nd update right?).. it popped up said there was an update.. i clicked "update now" it counted down said it was going to reboot.. the upgrade message went away.. but the system never rebooted..

What's going on here? What is this update? my "software number" is 4.06.605.3

thanks for your help

I forced the update by changing the month and got the same hang at reboot as everyone else. I manually restarted and the update didn't take. If your phone is currently functional, my advice is to leave it alone until HTC patches the patch that was supposed to patch the patch. Or get an iPhone.

It's funny you would say that... I was just thinking the reason this crap fails is because it is OTA. Apple (while they just enabled OTA as an option) updates via iTunes. BlackBerry updates via BlackBerry Desktop. Both let you tether your phone to a computer and download the update to the computer and then flash to the phone. I had a BlackBerry for years and never had an issue doing the updates.

Why can't we download this from HTC and flash it to our phones? Why does it have to be this "in the cloud for you if you're lucky, restart and force it to see if you can find it" crappy paradigm?

Hi, Dan. Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you are in the same boat as the rest of us. You are stuck on the buggy Gingerbread update. Once the initial "small patch" (the most recent one) attempt fails due to imaginary "low memory"problem (I had plenty - hundreds of MB free when mine failed), you are stuck. It can't reboot the phone to install for some reason.

If the solution is to factory reset/wipe the phone to get it to install (like a guy a couple of pages back had success doing), I wholeheartedly oppose that as a fix. I refuse to lose my data to get fixes for bugs that were forced on me when I had only minor bugs before. I can get the apps back from the Market/Appstore/Getjar, but I can't get my data back. I've been down that road before, and no amount of backing up will allow me to restore my progress in games and all my notes in ColorNote, etc..

what is this second patch? Is verizon aware of what's going on? I just got it to do it again. it doesn't the count down to reinstall.. it doesn't freeze it.. the update screen just goes away and it never upgrades.

What's in this second upgrade?

Can we call verizon?
