Android Central Question

My new Fossil Sport watch often shows the "no connection icon" (the cloud with a line through it) at the top of my screen. This sometimes disappears (possibly when my phone is on wifi, but i cant be sure).

Furthermore when i go into settings -> Connectivity -> Bluetooth it also ALWAYS shows as "Not Connected". Which implies my watch and phone are NOT connected via Bluetooth, yet I am still getting text message/whatsapp/phone call notifications.

I am confused by the fact its showing no connection yet i am still getting stuff through from my phone.

One thing that is not working is being able to use the microphone to record a reply to a message. So this implies something is not right with my set up.

Does anyone know more about this connectivity stuff?

I moved this to the Fossil forum for more specific traffic.

If you open the Wear OS app on your phone, does it say that your watch is Connected?

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

I have created an account on here now.

Yes my app shows as "Connected via BlueTooth"fossilSportWearOSIssue.jpg

In the attached image, hopefully you can see the following
- the phone app says connected
- the watch shows the cloud with line through it icon
- the watch shows i have a notification
- the watch shows i can not dictate a reply

Is your watch's WiFi turned on?

Watch Setup->Connectivity->Wifi.

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

The WiFi setting shows as "automatic"

Whats interesting is when I am at home (and therefore my phone is on my home WiFi) the cloud icon disappears.
When i am not at home, it shows.

I thought that the watch would get internet connectivity through the Bluetooth connection on my phone, therefore when my phone is not on wifi, its on 4G so my watch should still have internet connection via my phones 4g. Is this not how it should work?

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

First -- do you only notice the Disconnected status when you wake the watch after it's been asleep for a while? Does it ultimately connect about 5 minutes or so later? I think this started happening with one of the big Wear OS updates a while back (either when it officially went up to 2.0, or maybe the "H" update). I suspect they did that as a way to conserve battery.

If it remains disconnected, then I recall seeing that kind of behavior with my old Huawei Watch. If I tapped the Connect option on the watch enough times, it would finally show an official connection. What happens if you tap the phone listing in your watch's Bluetooth menu -- does it give you an option to connect?

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

"What happens if you tap the phone listing in your watch's Bluetooth menu " - nothing, there is no ontap action for that item, only the "Bluetooth" and "available devices" options are tapable.

"Do you only notice the Disconnected status when you wake the watch after it's been asleep for a while? Does it ultimately connect about 5 minutes or so later?" - alas no i don't think so. I have had my watch on my wrist for a couple of hours today and I am at home, therefore my phone is on my wifi and today its showing the cloud icon on the home screen and under bluetooth is shows as disconnected from my phone.

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

See what happens if you forget the watch in the phone's Settings>Bluetooth menu, and then try to re-pair. Alternatively, do a factory reset of the watch and set it up again in order to re-establish the Bluetooth connection.

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

I have already tried all the standard resets,
- phone bluetooth off/on
- watch bluetooth off/on
- restart phone
- restart watch
- wear OS app, disconnect from watch and reconnect
- watch factory reset
- etc

Some combination of above worked for a time, but then I get the cloud icon again.

Does anyone understand what that cloud icon actually means?
- The fact i am still getting WhatsApp/email/text notifications indicates it IS connected to my phone via bluetooth (even though the watch says its not)
- the fact that i can not dictate a text message reply from the watch implies it has no internet, but if its connected to my phone via bluetooth (as textmessages etc notifications indicate) then surely it should be getting the internet from the watch (wifi or 4g)

Re: Fossil Sport shows no connection icon & not connected on Bluetooth but am getting notifications

Sorry for the late reply...
The cloud icon means WearOS is not connected (or attempting to connect) to google servers. So yes your watch bluetooth and wifi can be perfectly connected. However if WearOS is not connected to mother ship servers it will display that cloud icon (despite having full BT/Wifi connection). Yes you can simultaneously have the cloud icon at the top and the circle dot icon at the bottom. It just means you have unread notifications, and the watch OS/device is not connected to google servers.

There is no way to manually eliminate the cloud icon from the display... you can't turn it off or hide it from view. Its one of my biggest complaints about WearOS. I have some watch faces that need to use that area of the display and it gets in the way.

Don't quote me on this but I am pretty certain the "more advanced" Google functions need full data connection as well as a connection to google servers. Voice recognition / related functions might be one of those. So if you see the cloud icon, speech recognition functions will not work. The "OK Google" thing won't work either... IIRC. Let others correct me though.
