Freezing / Lock-ups and SD card issues?

Well the reformatting lasted almost 4 days but it lost the sd card last night. Unmounted and remounted and it started working fine again.

almost a week of no issue then 5am this morning it unmounted. I'm just gonna ditch the stock sd card and toss is a 16gb one to see what happens when you completely eliminate their card.

I am seeing the same SD card issue as well. Seems like a common problem with these phones. I did format it and mounted it. It doesn't happen as often now.. but every few days i get the error. Usually taking the sd card out and putting it back in resolves it for the next few days.
Has anyone tried contacting LG about this?

I had this happen to me a few times...kind of just ignored it...(did not happen to me as many times as some of you have stated)....

however the last time it did happen to me..before trying to format the card..i threw in a old 2gb Sandisk card ive had for a while (formatted it a while back)..and not a problem.....put in the samsung card (what came with the phone) and issue happened a day later..so i formatted it..have gone back to my sandisk card..but will try the reformatted samsung card and will post results.

LG tech support is not aware of the SD card problem

I have had the SD card problem since the day I got my phone. At least a few times a day all my apps that are on my SD show up as the link id and won't launch b/c the phone stops recognizes my SD card. I can remove it and it notices it is removed and when I put it back in it doesn't remount it. I have to restart the phone now to get the SD card to work again. I contacted LG via online chat and their tech support was very friendly but said that they have no knowledge of this problem existing. I sure hope LG gets wind of this soon. I was hoping the update people are starting to see today was going to fix this problem. But if LG is unaware of the issue I doubt it :(

as of now to fix this issue..take out the defualt micro sd card...take the samsung adapter that your phone came with (in the box). (can use another if you want)..take it to a pc/laptop etc..and format..earlier reply from KSmithInNY in this post goes over how a few methods to format.

once formatted, reinsert the card into your phone..should be fixed..

however you can also try using a diff micro sd card. (if you have one)(or if you want to buy one).

i'm using a formatted sandisk card ive had and still have yet to come along this unmounting/locking issue while using diff sd card.

NOTE: might not want to format card using phone..i find it better using a pc.

I did this tonight on my sister's Optimus S... two hours later she tells me the phone did the black screen thing and had to do the battery removal to get it on.

So I formatted it on a PC... same issue. Formatted in phone.. Same issue.

I'm bringing her a 4gb card tomorrow to try.

Does anyone know if this was fixed in the software update that's just coming out?

worse after update

I have done the internal format and a full long format in my pc. I got the software update last night. The issue is still there today. It may even be worse now. I have had to pull the card or restart at least three timea this morning

Hi all, a quick update... As mentioned at the start of this thread, 3 phones were purchased from RadioShack and all had this problem. Phone #1 (mine) was returned because of the SD card issues and lock-ups forcing battery pulls to fix.

Phone #2 was exhibiting both of these problems. After a card format, phone #2 is working alright now although the owner believes they had a SD card unmounting issue once. This phone hasn't had any problems locking up anymore, either (probably unrelated to the SD card issue, but who knows for sure?)

Phone #3 is experiencing the SD card problem but the owner doesn't seem to care about it.

As for me, I purchased this phone again (from a Best Buy) a week after returning my original one. I formatted the SD card as soon as I got home and haven't noticed any SD card remounting, unmounting issues, or any lock-ups (yet?). Crossing my fingers here because I really do like this phone and don't want to end up returning it again due to the original problems I had.

Exchanging my phone tonight

I have called Spring and LG. Neither of them know of the issue with the SD card. Sprint told me to go ahead and exchange the phone for a new one. I sure hope this is hardware specific. I will try and stop by Best Buy tonight to exchange it out.

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you all. Its been little over a week since I unmounted, reformatted, and remounted the card. I have had no issues with it. No message or anything. But, my brothers Optimus is now doing the same thing with his 2gig SD that came with the phone. So I will be unmounting, formatting it, and see how that works.

exchanged phone still have problem

So finally got around to exchanging my phone. I exchanged it at best buy in a town 100 miles from the best buy I got my first phone at. I didn't even make it hope from best buy before this phone unmounted my SD card. I have noticed that it never does it while my screen is active and I am using the phone. It always happens when I turn the phone/screen back on. On my way home I pressed the button to turn the screen on and nothing happened. Pressed it two more times and finally the screen came back and sure enough it said unmounting SD card. And I had had to restart to get the thing to come back. This has to be software related. Sometimes i have luck with just turning the screen back off and wait a while then turn it back on and it will remount the card. I am thinking that they are checking the SD card every time the screen turns back on after it has been off for a while. It is like it is a power saving mode for the SD card and sometimes it just doesn't come back on correctly. I wish I could get into the kernel to see if something like that is going on. I guess I have a couple of weeks to see if I want to deal with this for the life of the phone.

Have you tried another sd card, or, as has been suggested in many posts, unmount, reformat the card and remount?

Ugh... I got a entirely new phone from Best Buy last Sunday. The first thing I did when I got home was format the card and I've been using that all week... Almost 7 days after using the phone with no problems I got the SD unmounting error!

I noticed that this happened when I turned the phone on from standby mode. It did take 3 presses of the power button to get it to come on, and this was the first time I've seen the battery indicator low enough to show the battery status color as yellow.

I had to pull the cart and reinsert it in order for it to be recognized again.

Not sure whether this some sort of fluke... but if this continues to happen on weekly basis I will likely be returning this phone before the 30 days are up.

I have unmounted, formatted via computer, and remounted. Went 1 day without the problem but it has returned today. It isn't everytime I wake the phone up, and sometimes it seems to fix itself where it will prepare the card. A couple of times, it didn't do this and I had to remount the card.

okay so...seeing people are still having issues....

using my other sd card (sandisk) no problems..however after a lil while of using the card that came with the phone the issues continued (after reformatting)

well i thought eh what the hell ill exchange the phone..
well this is the funny thing..new optimus s and no sd problems...however what surprised me is when i took out the card i looked at it and noticed it looked totally diff then from the one in the first phone..

so i went back to BBY and asked if i could see the phone i returned .. checked the sd card..and the card was SAMSUNG lol..yes thats right..SAMSUNG...the card in the new phone is a LG Card...while checking this out a manager told me another person returned the optimus s with the sd problems..he went and brought the phone..and guess what...NOT AN LG SD Card..

so..i would say..double check the brand of the sd card..however some on this thread have said even on other sd cards they are having issues (i think)..but eh..i would double check anyways...

thought i'd post this being i thought it was weird the first phone came with a samsung card not an lg card..

Definately software problem

I have tried the formating. And I have exchanged the phone and both do the same SD faults and random restarting. I have noticed some interface issues when this happens.

1. After a restart the phone was still in silent mode but the icon was a speaker with an "X" next to it. When I turned sound back on then back off it went back to the picture of the phone with the wavy lines.

2. After a restart the screen resolution formatting goes screwy. Widgets aren't properly sized.

Obviously these issues would not be do to the SD card itself but the software. Both of these issues came up after the phone had reset itself while it was sitting on my desk with the screen turned off. I did not wake it up, just noticed it said "android" on the screen and was restarting. Also when it first came back up the SD card was still not recoginized. I had to pull it and put it back in for it to be recognized and work. I had to restart the phone myself to get the screen formating to go back to normal. I have uploaded images to show the issues above. I don't see how this could be solely due to the SD card formating or manufacturer. There must be either a hardware or software issue going on here. My bet is software.

ARGH... today when I pressed the power button the card unmounted and then remounted automatically. Very annoying that this issue persists...

FYI, the 2GB card that came with the optimus is a SAMSUNG card.

Nother for issues with a Samsung card, replaced with a sandisk. No problems yet. If it is software related the card shouldn't matter unless there is something wrong with a specific aspect of the driver that is only used for those Samsung's.

The fact that new phones are coming with different makes of SD makes tells me LG found an issue with those or Samsung ran out of supply.

A definitive answer would be nice one day.

I had the same issues with the Samsung card that came with mine. It seemed like it would always do it when I pressed the power button to wake the phone up. It also seemed like it caused it to lock up a time or two. I formatted it FAT32, same issue. Then I reformatted FAT16 and it seemed better. It went from dropping a couple of time a day to like once every day or two. I saw a 4GB Sandisk at Office Depot for $8 the other day so I said what the heck and bought it. Installed it on Tuesday and haven't had another problem. So it definitely seems the issue is related to the factory Samsung card.

I just half to ask "do the engineers test this stuff?". How in the heck could they not see this in testing and trials. I guess when you rush products to market so fast this is what happens.
