Froyo OTA: First Impressions

I know.. I didn't hold out much hope.. but it actually worked.. got it downloaded..it booted up with the Droid eye.. WOOHOO!

atk

i am new to android... can someone please explain to me if i should or should not have advanced task killer after i have received the new update?

some people have said it is not compatible with froyo? and also what does rooting mean ?thanks :)

I used to be an ATK user -- it was helpful for clearing out battery-eating background apps. With froyo I have changed my tune. First, having apps loaded in the background will not effect performance (unless that process is doing something data intensive, which should rarely be the case). ATK is thus only useful if it can kill a process that might be using signal and wasting battery. But it's not clear that it can do that anymore, even the "froyo" version. They claim it works, but nobody can explain how they have access to killing these processes since Google closed off the APIs used by the task killers. Thus, if it does work, it might not be safe. But more importantly, all the anecdotal evidence suggests that they simply don't work -- not really, anyway (processes restart, then ATK fails to kill them).

Ditch it. At this point, nobody can say if they are useful to save battery life, which just leaves lots of potential to screw up the device with no benefit.

and also what does rooting mean ?thanks :)

Well the fact that LockPicker stopped working for 2.2 makes this "upgrade" more of a downgrade for me. I don't really care about any of the cool new 2.2 stuff.

Is there a way to revert back to 2.1?

Really nothing major to me. I'm more upset that google listen and music doesn't keep where I last paused it. This is really annoying.

Ok I know I read this in one of the post buy it probably lost by now...is anybody else's phone taking way too long to charge? My takes over 6 hrs! Something is not right...i can't be the only one...any body found what's causing that? Please help

Mine seems to take a while too. Doesn't seem right at all

You know, that's weird. LockPicker seems to still be working for me and a coworker. Or at least we are still able to just use a lock pattern over a pin. Can you just switch your security from pin/pass to pattern?

I don't know what's causing it, but I am having the same issue. Battery takes way longer to charge and discharges a lot faster. Hopefully someone will come out with a fix.

I seriously doubt that Verizon gave into pressure to release Froyo. Verizon has never really cared about meeting anyone else's needs when it comes to release dates.
Verizon has never cared much for what it's paying customers think, either - as evidenced by all the forceably installed and impossible to remove bloatware crap that absolutely nobody wants.

"Probably one of my favorite additions with 2.2 is the phone finally has a droid eye at start up."

and this is valuable why? given all the skeptical comments about I'm reading about this upgrade, I find it hard to believe there is any value in the startup graphics, which are little more than a marketing billboard. Just sayin'...

Did anyone notice that icons inside folders are bigger? Is there a way to change icon size?

Skype Mobile will not stay down. THAT?S GOT TO STOP!

I don't even have a Skype account. How can they justify forcing me to have/run this application? Corporate greed - nothing more, nothing less. Customers?? Hell no - we're all just consumers. It's pathetic.

Pattern is disabled for me, per security policy from the company. Also, I don't even know what pattern is. ;)

And looking around the interwebs, it seems LockPicker works for some people, but not others. Further, some people say it works, who downloaded it a long time ago and never updated it.

I'd imagine the developer will probably put out a new version eventually. I am trying No Lock now, we'll see if that works instead.

I work on the 47th floor of a building - pre-update I would get one or two reception bars. Now I consistently get four bars!!! and the 3G is always lite up!

Also, anyone notice that now when you plug your phone in via a USB cable attached to a computer it attempts to install Verizon Media Manager?!?!

I get a lag between the Droid Eye boot up anime and the Sense UI -- anyone else seeing that?

Is there any way to stop this?

I totally agree and that stupid city id, and peep and amazon mp3 and other bloatware UUGGGHHHHH:mad:

Decline update?

is there any way to decline the update? or am I going to get the "update available" popup on my phone every hour until I accept it? judging from the comments on this thread, I'm not inclined to update for a few weeks at least. So far, nothing anyone has said suggests the benefits outweigh the apparent negatives.
