Froyo OTA: First Impressions

So this seems to be the place and maybe this has already been ask. If so please forgive me. I thought with froyo we were supposed to be able to install apps to the sd card. Now do we have to reinstall everything in order to do that? As far as it goes, I have had no problems. Everything seems more responsive and being able to click strait through video links is nice with to flash support. I am wondering how many of the people that are having trouble had their phones rooted prior to going to the ota update? The funniest thing I have seen is every one *****ing about the new Verizon start up screen because so many people couldn't wait to get that feature in the first ota update that got canceled in favor of one big one with froyo included.

The app developers need to update their apps to provide the option to install in the sd card. So right now there aren't many apps with that capability (based on what I've read thus far).

My phone was not rooted before the update. After the update my phone has noticeable lag only for the internet browser. For the applications itself I haven't noticed any lag...phone actually seems more responsive. :)

So I downloaded the OTA and force installed this morning. My comments thus far:

- Super easy to install.
- Does not have new 3d gallery app, had to manually install
- Does not have new functionality at the bottom of the screen with new short cut buttons (bummer)
- The new lock methods are great
- Love the new flashlight, we needed this soooo bad
- 720P video is great and works well
- Apparantly there is a way to resize the application icons - haven't figured it out yet, I hate it, they're bigger now.
- Flash is amazing. Screw you Steve Jobs - IT IS POSSIBLE
- Some of the new Widgets are cool - not great but cool.
- have yet to try the new chrome to phone or wifi N support

In the end, there was a lot of "hype" leading up to this update. I got it, was excited, then got over it in about 7 minutes. I guess if it made my coffee in the morning I would be more happy.

Is it that it lags or are you going to flash intensive sights that never loaded that portion before so it is taking longer to load the flash components. I have noticed that the sights that have flash integrated into the page design take quite a while to load but that is just loading the flash crap and it isn't so bad on wifi but the little I have played with it on the 3G it is kind of frustrating.

Battery life still kind of bites. I left my car with full battery, went into a meeting at 8:30. Used phone limited amount during meeting, and had to take it out and plug into the charger in my car by 11:30/noonish.

I noticed that every time I picked up the phone, no matter what I did with it, the 3g indicator was going.

This is my biggest frustration with this phone. Wish I had rooted to undervolt and extend battery life.

Garrett4g, I couldn't agree with you more.

Most of all, I am bummed about the absence of the new launcher dock as well.

Here's a new question I just thought of... If I did the manual update before I got the notification of the OTA, will I still get notification from VZW?

Also:

How do I enable WiFi N? I am connected at 65mbs to my wifi now, but I know it is N... What are the new widgets? Didn't really notice any.

Agree 3d Gallery would have been nice, but downloaded it anyway...

I updated this morning and so far everything seems to be going great, all apps contacts etc remained on my phone and all my settings and such. Great thing I noticed is you can go into the settings of the stock messaging app and set it to keep only so many per conversation, been wanting this since I got the phone

great info. Thank you!

A few things...

- In system panel, it now seems like nearly all of my apps are "active." This wasn't the case before. It probably isn't a big deal because I still have plenty of memory and my phone seems to be running fine, but should I be concerned about this? Has anyone else noticed this?

- Is anyone using the new photo gallery? I installed it, but I think I prefer the old one.

- Skype Mobile, Amazon, etc are kinda starting to bug me now. I don't think they are slowing my phone down really, but I just hate seeing them in System Panel. I have no intention of rooting my phone, so I guess I will just have to deal with it.

Did 3d Gallery pull in photos from both sd card and internal phone memory?

Curious if you really re-size app icons. Also, I couldn't get the 3D Gallery to work properly -- maybe I'll try again. Did it pull in pics from both the internal memory and the sd card? Thanks.

OK, may as well post my thoughts...

- When contacts linked to Facebook call you, their status scrolls on their pic... Like
- Flashlight - Love! (I bump into things)
- News Widget - Like
- 3G Mobile Hotspot - Cool feature, not sure if I'll use it...
- Bloatware - Grumble
- Adjusting pattern lock timeout - Love
- 270 degree screen rotation - Love
- Speed and Battery increase - Remains to be seen
- Video Camera - ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE ENHANCEMENTS! I was upset when I was under the impression it would only be 720p video... Nice enhancement, but it's lacking things... Namely the Flash being on while recording and Auto-Focus... Well, I just saw that Auto-Focus AND Flash during video are available... REALLY happy about this...

I guess that's all I can think of at the moment...

Don't know if you guys already discussed this, but is anyone having a problem signing into Peep?

I started a thread on it...

Ya, I can't sign into Peep either. Says my password doesn't work. Like CRK said, there's a thread on it already.

"When contacts linked to Facebook call you, their status scrolls on their pic... Like"

Does their status scroll when they call you, or only when you call them? I've noticed that if someone calls me, the status is there but not scrolling, but when I call them....it actually scrolls.

It's not important really, I'm just curious.

Ok, I tested the wifi 802.11n using the speedtest app. I have Time Warner Internet service and a wireless-N Dlink router. I got 12-17Mbps download speeds and .55Mbps upload speeds. Are we impressed?

How do you know you are connected to wifi N?
