Froyo OTA: First Impressions

Has anyone else noticed the trackpad is more usable now..it scrolls faster than 1 character at a time!!!

That is a simple setting you can chamge, and always could change. I can't find where now but I remember the option when I first set up my phone. Anyone know where to find the trackpad settings?

New Drive?

...

But it did do something strange and I'm wondering if anyone else has this and can tell me what it is and what to do with it. After the install I checked my drives and it added a drive. I normally have the internal drive and the sd card drive. now I have a 3rd drive called F: Verizon mobile. When I open that drive I have Folders named DRV, IMG and 3 other files one of which is called TL Bootstrap and it is an application. Everytime I connect my phone to my PC it asks me if I want to run the app. Anyone else experiencing this.

Yes! I am so annoyed at this! My drive shows up as H: Verizon Mobile. I tried to delete the fies within it or even the whole drive while connected to my pc but it won't let me. And i can't find the drive or files on the phone using Astro. To make it even more idiotic, the crapware it wants me to install apparently isn't even compatible with Windows 7, according to VZW Tech Support tonight.

So now, any time I want to access my sd card, I have to cancel their little pop-up auto-install thingy, and mount my phone as a disk drive, so I can see both the internal and sd card storage drives.

finally got it working after running unrevoked forever then downgrading then upgrading. i like froyo! but scrolling seems slower now.

I just finally upgraded to 2.2 and yikes, I know it's been said before but it is PAINFULLY slower than 2.1. How is it possible that it can really be slower? Not remotely as responsive as 2.1, its more sluggish scrolling through things, even unlocking the phone causes it to lag. What a shame.

My thoughts

All the things I noticed about the update has been posted by everyone else except a few more:

1. The stock compact keyboard has wider keys now.

2. The compact keyboard is NOT multi-touch capable. How do I know? If you hold down the shift key (before it does a CAPS lock) only the first letter you press will be capitalized. The rest, lower case.

3. I don't think HTC included threaded call logs.

so I have been a long time lurker-I decided today to become impatient and downloaded the OTA update manually. Installed like a charm.

My take on Froyo-

Full disclosure-my main reason to switch to Android was because I needed better intergration with work email, so most of what I was looking forward to was Exchange/Corporate based

1. Love the ability to search the Global Address List-this is the biggest feature I wanted
2. Love the 802.11n
3. Revamped keyboard is great
4. Love the new security(numerical login and full passwords)
5. Flash is awesome
6. The New News/RSS reader app could be cool

Dislikes
1. For some reason, I thought that we were gaining exchange task sync-its not a big deal at all-I just thought we were getting it.
2. Like a few others, the DROOOOOOID at startup is really annoying.

I've seen it posted before as well, but I'm just not seeing it.

Other then scrolling in the browser being a little slower, everything else seems to be snappy and working well. The browser itself seems to render faster, and games seem to run smoother. I?ve had no problems with mail. I love the new BlueTooth stack, and voice commands work well.

I've had no problems with the lock screen or with scrolling between home screens. As other?s had previously posted the Optical Joystick also works much better then in 2.1.

All I'm waiting for in the Unrevoked guys to crack 2.2 so I can remove the crapware, but most of what I wanted Root for is already in 2.2.

I?m not saying you observation is wrong, just that I have not seen the same thing. Have you tried a backup and reset? There could be old cache files or app caches that are affecting your performance.

Thank you for the download. Okay, dumb question though...how do we install it?

I left the file on my SD card. I guess I need to download a file manager or something?

Once you download it just open it up and it will install just like a market app. No recovery boot or sd card or update.zip required.

A few things...

- In system panel, it now seems like nearly all of my apps are "active." This wasn't the case before. It probably isn't a big deal because I still have plenty of memory and my phone seems to be running fine, but should I be concerned about this? Has anyone else noticed this?

- Is anyone using the new photo gallery? I installed it, but I think I prefer the old one.

- Skype Mobile, Amazon, etc are kinda starting to bug me now. I don't think they are slowing my phone down really, but I just hate seeing them in System Panel. I have no intention of rooting my phone, so I guess I will just have to deal with it.

Yeah I've noticed all of the extra apps running too. Skype, Amazon, etc. Tweetcaster keeps auto-starting too, even after I kill it. Didn't do this on 2.1. I'm pretty annoyed by this too.

Again this is the FINAL OFFICIAL FLASH FOR ANDROID !!version 10.1.92.8 12.52 MB. Let me know how you guys make out.

Worked for me.

For someone who asked above... download the apk file, make sure you have Unknown Sources checked off (menu->Settings->Applications) and then point to it with Astro or some other file manager and click it. You will be taken to the application manager, use Upgrade and you are done.

After messing with this a little more tonight, I can honestly say I'm mostly underwhelmed with this update. There are a few nice additions that are sandwiched in between a whole lot of crap, in my opinion. I'm really not understanding what all the fuss was about for this update.

Pros:

Improved search features.
Pin number lock screen security
Flash is nothing I was drooling over, but it is kind of cool to have the choice to view the content in the browser.
Flashlight is not a very useful app on a day to day basis, but I'm sure I'll find a use for it sooner or later here in Oklahoma.
wifi N ... I wasn't really seeing an improvement at first (and said so somewhere in this topic). I believe I was a bit hasty. I'm definitely getting a better signal in many areas of my house where I wasn't before.

Cons:

SLOWWWW! or maybe sluggish is a better word for it. Wasn't this Froyo update supposed to mostly be about speed? The choppiness when scrolling between screens, in the browser, or basically doing anything where scrolling happens reminds me a lot of my old Moto Droid. Sad, but a good reminder that benchmark numbers don't mean a damn thing compared to real world everyday use.
Battery life has not improved as advertised. Possibly might be worse.
Bloatware is a little too over the top with this update, and I'm usually not one to complain too much about these types of things. I'm especially annoyed by the media manager crap that you're bombarded with when plugging into a PC via USB. Not cool at all.
"DROID" ... God I really hate that. I didn't like it on the Moto Droid either after hearing it more than a couple of times. I've seen in the topic about this that there are different options available for silencing this, which is cool. But it really should be an option in the OS, in my opinion.

Anyway... that's just my early take on it. I guess another 'pro' would be that I've not ran into any bugs yet, so that's cool.

wasnt there supposed to be different camera setttings? Like the settings on the right side (when phone is horizontal) as well as a different gallery? Dont see either changes

Same here. I've only noticed laginess/slowness with the browser when scrolling or watching Flash (will download official non-beta release and update comments). Other than that, the phone seems more responsive than with the 2.1 software. Before the update I uninstalled ATK and all other apps and everything is working just like before. :)

I used the OTA link download, and, while most is generally good, I've noticed lag in loading androidcentral.com and the "near me now" locations on the google mobile search page.

Did the manual update around 1 pm this afternoon on my lunch break at work and since then I have loved every second of this froyo goodness. First thing I notice is how my phone feels like it is brand new because of how quick and snappy everything is again. I dont know why people are complaining about froyo being sluggish because on my phone its pure speed. Maybe you guys have way too many apps? Anyways...second thing I have noticed is how much faster and more accurate the HTC keyboard is. Im not sure if it has been confirmed to be multi-touch or not but it appears to me that this is the case. The third thing that I love is the flashlight app. I had the Dinc led flashlight app but that always messed with the camera. This HTC one is amazing. And better yet, I can integrate it with my switchpro powerbar widget. 2.1 the button would just give me the white screen flashlight but now with 2.2 I could change the setting to control the LEDs and all I do is just tap the flashlight button on my power bar and I have max brightness of the LEDs. I highly recommend getting this. So overall i'm thrilled with froyo so far. One thing I am confused about is the whole flash situation. It appears I have flash but websites with flash have a grey box with a green arrow that I have to push to load the flash part. Shouldnt this load automatically?

Posted somewhere else here too but my main problems I'm not liking is Froyo is not playing nice with the HTC mail widget. No matter how many times I remove it and put it back it freezes up. The Friends stream will not refresh. And I cannot set my own ringtones and notifications. Only the stock ones that come on the phone come up. Before it gave me a choice of the phone's sounds or my sounds. Some of my ringtones come up in my music folder so it let's me "set as ringtone" but it does not give me the choice to set as notification. Did that make sense?

Oh and I am seeing a difference in speed. I do not have the lagging that a lot of people are saying. Mine is pretty snappy, especially browsing the internet.

Forgot one other thing. Chrome to phone is just ingenious. I love it. It is simply amazing.

Weren't we supposed to get a new version of the Market with 2.2? How do you set it to "update all" for App updates?
