Froyo OTA: First Impressions

Hmmm....when I set it on auto rotate it only displays in landscape in mail and browser.
I wonder what I'm missing ?
I haven't check all the stock apps, but you are right, at first glance it seems only mail and browser handle landscape. I was expecting to be able to do the same at least for Calendar and People, but it doesn't work :( I did noticed that Astro file manager does work in landscape, but I think this was true even in Android 2.1. I hate when they advertise something and then they are not consistent.

When I get a .wav file attached to gmail it will not preview it in 2.2. Worked until the update. Also, movies still cannot rotate to the volume buttons and power port on top.

ive noticed a significant battery improvment and better wireless signal when connectect to a wireless router. and better overall signal displayed.

I had to do a clean reboot and from scratch though. by downgrading, and then putting on the updates

Ok post "factory reset" manually installed all apps and customizations

4h 54m since unplugged
42% Cell Standby
41% Phone idle
12% Android system
3% Display
2% Internet

with 85% remaining.

Now keep in mind I have barely used the phone. I used it about 10 mins of web (w/flash). and some texting etc.

So far it's underwhelming

So far the experience with Froyo has been terrible here. Battery life has tanked. Charging goes at a snails pace. Still can't watch any videos on MSN.com. Some that worked before on YouTube no longer will play now. Can't think of any positives yet.

got froyo a couple days ago and really like it so far:
*faster, noticeably so for me browsing and opening apps etc
*720p vid is very cool, love it!
*everything seems to be working fine (admittedly, haven't put it through any rigorous paces yet tho)

missing: would like to enable wifi tether without vzw having to put their hands in my pocket. hoping someone out there will have some suggestions/tutorials soon!

android incredible :)

Google is your friend!

Anyone get this?
When I plug my phone into my PC (Win7 Pro 64bit) I get an autostart window that show a CD Drive
(Drive Letter) Verizon Mobile
with 2 autorun options to either Install Drivers or Open the folder..

This is before even choosing Charge Only of Drive mode.. it just does it..

I had my phone plugged into the comp when I ran the Auto Official OTA and at some point during the install this came up and now anytime I plug into my comp it comes up still.

Anyways, curious if I am the only one, maybe someone already posted this issue and I missed it, tried to search for it and no results came up so I fear I am alone.. :/

Earlier in this thread there is a post about how to turn this off. It's easy and works.

I have the same problems watching videos too (check my post). Try going to CNET.com and click on the video Tab and let the video load. You'll get very laggy audio....actually horrible! Flash on 2.2 hasn't impressed me yet and all that talk between them and Apple. Looking bad Adobe, looking bad. : (

The rotation improvement in 2.2 is that apps can now be rotated 270 degrees (so, landscape left, portrait, landscape right), like an iPhone or Blackberry. Before you could only rotate landscape left (i.e., top of the phone left, bottom right) or portrait. Nobody ever said that HTC was going to turn on landscape functionality for apps (or the home screen) that didn't have it before, though it was hoped.

I totally agree. The home screen not rotating doesn't bother me at all (the fellow member asked about it). But I was expecting the rotation to work at least on the stock apps (calendar, music, etc). Right now YouTube still rotates to one side only. Ohh well...we can hope for the next update ;)

I've had the 2.2 update for a few days now. At first I loved it, it was faster, nice subtle changes to a few apps, 720p vid recording, etc. Now I am having all kinds of issues. Battery life is horrible because apps keep opening and running in the background. Memory use is ok, stays around 115-125 now, but before the update I rarely, if ever, dropped below 200. Speakers have a bit of crackle when the phone rings and when talking. Virtual keyboard gets jumpy, can hardly type on it at all. I have to close what I was doing and open it again to make it stop. The phone comes out of sleep mode on it's own randomly, thought it still remains locked. There are a few other issues I cant think of at the moment as well. All in all, I am quite dissapointed, and my phone is nowhere near as usable or enjoyable as it was with 2.1. Is there a way to go back to 2.1, or can 2.2 be installed manually over the 2.2 I have on there now? Maybe I had a bad install.

You sure about that?

Right now, the following "bloatware" apps are running on my phone even though I didn't open them and don't use them.
  • AmazonMP3
  • App Sharing
  • Facebook for HTC Sense
  • Flickr
  • Footprints
  • FriendStream
  • Peep
  • Skype Mobile
  • Stocks
  • Visual VM

Yes, their mere existence irks me. But guess what? When I look at what has been using my battery in SpareParts (Battery History), I find that none of these apps accounts for any CPU, Network, GPS, Sensor or Partial Wake usage. Any. Nada. They are open, but they are not costing me a thing in terms of performance or battery drain.

The apps that are using up CPU cycles and hitting the network on my phone are the apps that I want to do so -- Weather Channel, Facebook, Market, Internet, HTC Sense.

Check your own battery history now -- enter *#*#4636#*#* into the phone dialer, click "Battery History," then try all of the options in the top menu (set the bottom menu to "since boot" (don't do anything else while in the Testing Menu -- you've been warned -- if you break something, it's not my fault). I'm willing to bet that none of the apps you think are draining your battery actually are.
