G5 owners - happy or not?

Looks like I got a particularly bad unit lcd wise. If I had to work hard to find backlight bleed it wouldn't have bothered me, but I could see it quite bad in normal use in the day time at half brightness. Glad that there are a decent amount of people getting good products.

I am just an average user and cannot speak to the technical specs of this phone. However, I think I represent the vast majority of users because most people aren't going to go into a dark room to check for light bleed or scratch the phone to determine its composition. That said I am very happy with it. The screen is bright and sharp. It is fast. Like web browsing, play store, running apps are all very fast. I like the look and feel of it. I set up all the extraneous apps into one folder which serves as an app drawer. I know it's silly but I really like the green Spirograph/mandala looking lock screen. The phone feels quality. I don’t want to scratch it so I’ll just accept it as is. I’ve had it off the charger since last night at about 7pm and it’s at 55% now at 11:38 the following morning. I have used it moderately not heavy though (texting, Instagram, emails). The camera is great. I have an iPhone 6 for work (they require us to have iPhone) and I’ve always like the camera on that but this is hands down better. I took some shots in low light inside my house and this camera does loads better. The iPhone picture was darker and the colors weren’t as true. I really like that there is a manual option too so that I can adjust shutter speed and ISO. It opens up some creative options.

I can see how light bleed not might bother some, however for me I already have the S7 edge and it truly is the best display on planet which is not only my opinion but the majorities. Knowing this it somewhat triggers a red flag. The camera didn't seem in the same league at the s7 either..from the side by sides at Verizon, whatever that's worth. I just felt like the S7 edge didn't have any compromises for me.

Update from my earlier post:

I wound up exchanging the phone for another and this one has no issues whatsoever. There is no light bleed and the build quality is fantastic. There are definitely good units out there.

Under normal usage or by using a test app. Normal usage I get none....I can see it with a test app at 100 percent brightness.

I am extremely pleased. It is the fastest, smoothest, most consistently performing phone I've used.

Previous phone was a nexus 5x, which was a gigantic pile of fail. Constant stutter and lag, and if it wasn't reset every couple of days it would become unusable. On and forget about Google maps, the only way in which it wouldn't slow the phone to a crawl was if it was loaded immediately after a reboot.

Before that, a s6. It had random stutter an lag and needed regular reboots. Had the maps issue to a lesser extent.

Before that, a nexus 6. No issue with maps and no slow to a crawl, but consistent stutter and lag.

Prior phones were pre-lollipop so they functioned properly.

This g5 does not slow down. It does not lag. It does not stutter. Even maps can't mess it up. Just pure butter smooth.

Is the s7 as smooth? Beats me haven't used one for long enough to tell.

Camera is real good. Not sure if its improved over the g4, but really, the g4 and s6 hit the doorway to diminishing returns. Beyond those, differences are incremental. G4 level cam is fine.

Build quality is ok. Mine seems much better than some of the horror shows I've seen tech bloggers get, but it's still behind the s7.

Battery is decent. Nothing really to say.

Screen is fantastic if you look at it on its own, and merely good if you look at it next to a s7.

I can't speak for the s7, but i can say that if you're tired of lag and stutter, you'll be extremely happy with this phone.

The s7 does stutter but it starts to lag when using certain themes. A patch has been released to improve performance but I haven't received it yet.

Normal usage so far. Haven't used a test app and I don't think I'm going to. I had the phone in bed with me last night in a completely dark room and noticed no light bleed. That's good enough for me. The only imperfection I finally found is that the sim card tray is slightly recessed from the body, which makes that area a bit sharp to the touch. I can live with that though because I've seen that happen on other phones as well (most recently my galaxy note 5).

I'm coming from the LG G3 which I loved and I can tell it will be the same with the G5. The new camera features and battery setup makes it a done deal for me. My battery use looks to be very good and mine has no build issues. (I'm on Verizon)

Am I alone?

Am I alone in my affection for my LG G5 on Verizon? This phone is fast. Battery lasts all day (moderate use) screen is sharp and responsive. Build quality is also fine on my handset. Bit where this device is really winning me over is with the camera. The wide angle lens really makes photos unique. While traveling with my phone and taking pictures my friends are asking me to share my photos and they are putting there devices away. (Example photo is attached)

Please let me know if anyone else is happy with their G5

Re: Am I alone?

No, you are not alone in loving the Verizon G5. I love mine and haven't had any issues with it.

I have the s5 900A, overall I'm pleased with my phone. My future plan will be to root because of the OTA from AT&T , I bought it from AT&T but I've been a Straight Talk customer for 5+ yrs.

I hope these LG G5's last longer than a year. I was a big LG fan. The G3 was perfect. Never had an issue. As soon as the G4 launched I upgraded 3 of my lines to them. When the G4's arrived, I took my case off my G3, and noticed I had some light bleed on the left side, almost as if the screen was beginning to lift off. I keep my devices in mint condition, glass screen protectors and a rugged case on day 1. Anyway, 5 months in on the G4, my wife's G4 randomly began bootlooping. She doesn't root or mod anything. Thankfully, it was still under warranty, and AT&T sent a "new" one. 2 months later same thing happened to my daughters G4. Meanwhile, mine was still fine. On the 8th month, it was my turn. Luckily, I was still under 1 year warranty, and sent a new one out. However, I began researching the issue and it turned out and motherboards that started with SN 505xxxxx were bound to have this issue due to poor quality control and a solder point becomes loose in time from the heat of the device. So it just became a matter of time for each device. All my replacement phones began with a different SN. But at this point, I couldn't face losing data again. Yes, I was backed up, but not within the last month.
Needless to say, LG had now left a bad taste in my mouth... When i saw the G5 had changed so many things, plus removed all the buttons on the back, just wasnt crazy about the build. So when the s7 edge launched, I went with that. Never had a Samsung phone before. Great phone, buying a screen protector for it with a case is a nightmare though. I hope with the G6 or V11, it gets better. I hope all you people that bought the G5 still feel the same about it by the time the G6 rolls out, then maybe I will rethink buying an LG product. Especially at launch. Just my 2 cents.

I love the G5. I love the look of the phone and the way it feels in the hand. I just put Google Now Launcher on the phone and it works perfect. Fast and smooth with all my apps. I love the always on screen because it shows what notifications are wanting your attention rather than just a flashing light. Really I think that you should not compare this phone next to a Samsung but compare it to what your needs are. I recommend to at least look at the phone or ask someone who has used it for a while before hating it.

Just switched - pretty happy !!

So I have been an iphone user for a very long time and occasionally dabble in android. I went from the iphone 6s plus to the galaxy s7 edge. Hated that phone so I went back to the iPhone.

Today I went into T-Mobile to check out the G5 and was actually very impressed. I like the feel in the hand and think its the perfect size. The camera quality is awesome. I traded in my iphone. Hopefully I stick with this G5!!

We traded in a G3 for the G5 this past weekend. It's still early in the running but from everything we've seen it's really nice. Gold unit from AT&T store had excellent fit and finish, no noticeable screen issues.

Screen is super sharp and color accurate. It's one of the best LCD's I've seen on a phone. LCD vs OLED.. everyone has their opinion and there are trade offs for either.

This processor combo is excellent. Opens everything quickly and moves from task to task seamlessly. Haven't seen a lag or stutter yet.

The two camera addition is a great one and is actually making us think of upgrading the G4 in the family as well though I don't want to lose the curved leather back since it feels so good in the hands.

The G5 feels nice in it's own right, solid without being weighty, and the inclusion of a sharper edge is a nice touch as it adds a little grip to an otherwise fairly slick phone. The little curve at the top of the screen makes me want to pull down the notifications/settings screen over and over like a little worry stone. (Though it does make glass screen protectors an issue).

I had no idea that I actually wanted a fingerprint scanner on a phone till I tried this one. Once I figured out to show it more of my finger during the setup it opens the phone very quickly and makes my G4 a little jealous.

Not a fan of moving the volume rocker back to the sides of the phone. I accidentally press it from time to time.

Battery life is fine and seems to be in close range of other phones sporting the 820. With quick charge and a user replaceable battery it's surpassed any phone I've used to date in this regard so I'm not sure why folks have issues with power maintenance. One thing I haven't thoroughly tested but did notice is that using an Aukey quick charger seems to power up the phone much more quickly than the one that came in the box.

Another thing that I don't see mentioned much is the speaker... it's LOUD. You don't need an additional speaker to hear it over the shower quite clearly. Now, it's certainly lacking in bass but it's a definite improvement over the G3 and G4.

I don't know if this is a G5 thing or a Marshmallow thing that isn't activated on my G4 build but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that always on listening for "OK Google" is an option! I thought you had to go Motorola for this feature. Makes this phone quite useful in the kitchen with messy hands. Perhaps this has something to do with the always on display which is also a nice touch and a useful upgrade in my opinion. No more opening the phone for notifications that aren't terribly important, the application that's asking for your attention is clearly displayed at a glance.

Dear AT&T,
ENOUGH WITH THE BLOATWARE ALREADY! It's bad enough that you pre-install it, it's worse that we can't remove it!

Really didn't play with the UX very much as we're Action 3 or Nova users so no good comparisons there.

We went into the store primarily to get our hands on both the G5 and the S7E before we made the decision and I've got to say they're both very appealing in their own ways. In the end it was the removable battery system, two camera setup, no hardwired capacitive and home buttons, and the placement of the fingerprint scanner that made the decision for us. Don't think you can go wrong with either.

Congratulations on making the switch!!!

My first real cell phone was an iPhone 4s. I liked it at first, but it wasn't long before I found out everything I wanted to do with the iPhone I couldn't do!?!?

Once I figured out Android allowed me to do pretty much whatever I wanted... It was a wrap for me. I've never been good at doing what I'm told to do!!! Lol!!

When upgrade time rolled around, I was quick to try Samsung, think it was s4 then... I couldn't get along with touchwiz... but I loved the freedom and the extra screen size!! I went to swap the s4 and found the LG G2.

Nobody was using LG yet, they were only known for making cheapish pre paid handsets. Yet, the specs... Snapdragon 800, 5.2" 1080p display, 3000mah battery, and I don't know what else were too much to not give it try. Once I got it, saw how fast it was(back then), realized the battery lasted for a while, and that it had no buttons on the front... making it look like it was just a pure screen... I was hooked!!!

Every flagship release since then, I've gotten excited and tried. G3/G4.. My wife loves Samsung... so I got try all those too and nothing could keep up. Maybe they were sliiiightly faster, but battery was always dead... and I didn't care enough about QHD to deal with it.

When G5 came out at MWC, I was worried because of the smaller 2800 mah battery, but figured worst case I'd be able to get a spare and still make it through the day.

But when Samsung came out with the s7 edge and it's larger battery 3600mah... I was seriously struggling on what to do. Especially since LG was making everyone wait. Thankfully, I held out... and that 2800 mah battery is a moooonster!!!!!

I'm actually working on 5 hrs of SOT right now and I still have 45% battery life left!!!!! No BS!!!
