Galaxy Nexus Randomly shutting down?

I've had one hard freeze a day for the first four days or so, but have not had one for the last week or so.

It's somewhat interesting because I only had freezes with a T-Mobile SIM, and never with a Rogers SIM.

I've had this happen twice in the past 48 hours.. think I'll start going backwards through my AppBrain history to try to spot an app that might be causing it.

I've had random reboots also on mine, not often but it once happened while I was in the middle of showing an iphone fanboy how amazing this phone is. Talk about embarrassing. This phone is fast as hell and truly amazing at everything but this random reboot stuff had got to be fixed with an over the air update asap!

Last night I was charging my nexus at a friends house using a random charger(never heard of the brand).

It was charging normal the whole time, but then while playing texas holdem, the phone all of blinked few times and shut off(charger still intact). I then went to turn it back on and it would show the welcoming animation, then when it came to the lock screen, it showed it as December 31, 2011 with an explanation point in the battery symbol...then shut down on its own again. I continued to try to turn the phone on,only showing the animation then shutting down. Then something weird happened where it showed the reboot screen, showing Mr. android and a large logo above it stating "Start"...and wouldn't do anything if I pressed on it. This eventually went back to the dead black screen.

I let it charge this time with a LG phone charger, and it showed the normal battery buildup charging. After sometime, I disconnected it from the charger and it showed it as if it was still charging(white battery symbol)...weird and would still not turn on. I assumed the battery was totally dead...being it would turn on or anything, though when I got home I plugged it in and its said it had 60% battery life on her..wtf!

Very interesting indeed, I just landed at JFK, put in my T-Mobile SIM card and the phone did a hard freeze within 15 minutes. I didn't have a single freeze during my week using a Rogers SIM card.

This happens to me pretty often. My phone only powers down on it's own when it is idle. Usually when it's in my pocket. I will pull it out and it is just powered off. I have no idea why. Have to hold the power button to turn back on. I've never had a power down or reboot while I was actively using it.

I have the Verizon Nexus. I am worried it is a hardware issue. I'd rather not have to exchange for a refurb. My phone works perfectly other than this issue.

Hello everyone I was researching my issue to see if other were having the same issues as mine and I stumbled across our discussion and decided to join. I too have had several complete Shut downs or power offs (not restarts) since owning the Galaxy Nexus (LTE). I have noticed it doing it mainly with Google apps. I have returned my original Nexus and now am on my second. The phone has completely shut off when using the Camera, Navigation and messaging apps. I see that some of you have had it the shut down with Google Music so there seems to be a link there. I honestly don't know what to do cause I love the phone. They need to hurry up and push 4.0.3 out cause I have until the 15th to change my mind. I created a case last night with google (issue 23705). Cheers to everyone :D

Had my LTE GNexus since launch day and it hasn't rebooted yet. I have kept it relatively clean and didn't automatically import everything from my other phone. I've only imported and downloaded what I needed. And absolutely NO task killers. With ICS I don't see the point of having one.

I have a GN for one week and I had the exact same problem as you today for the first time.
I was listening to music (with google music) and reading an article, then the music freezed for about 20seconds and then the GN shutdown.
I had to pull out the battery to make it restart.

I'm using a GSM GN, android version 4.0.1 (my french operator hasn't proposed 4.0.2 yet)

I hope this bug is going to be corrected.

Just had this happen yesterday in the browser. Was typing a reply on a forum, and the keyboard froze for about 10sec, then the phone shut down. Didn't need a battery pull, but it was still rather annoying. When the phone rebooted and I opened the browser, my reply window was still open, but the text I'd written was gone.

GSM 4.01 here.

Wow.. The exact same thing happened to me yesterday. Surprised me and was the first time it has happened to me.

I've been testing/reviewing a device for a blog, and in the one week I have had the device, It has shut down/frozen on me five times. Twice just today!! It required a battery pull each time! One of the times today after restarting it, it wouldn't even get a connection... I had to reboot it one more time to get it going... :(

Just had another reboot. Was viewing a webpage with three or four embedded youtube videos. I started playing one, then paused it and scrolled down to play another. Froze for a few seconds, then rebooted itself. Thankfully the GN boots very quickly, and the browser saves all the open windows when this happens (I only had one open anyway).

Let's hope this is just a teething problem, and as ICS gets developed more, bugs like this will get worked out. Sure seems like the phone has a problem handling memory, and once it reaches a certain point, just overloads and reboots.

I've had my phone on 4.0.1 for a month and I've probably had to do 4 or 5 battery pulls and seen it reboot a few times on its own, I've also rebooted it myself a few times like a few minutes a go to get the GPS working again. I suspect a large part of the problem is apps that mostly work, just look at the Android log at all the exceptions... Hopefully as they get updated things will improve.

Mine does it every afternoon driving home from work listening to pandora. I finally realized the 2.5mm audio cable was bad. New cable and it stopped rebooting.
I installed all my apps manually and didn't root, nor do I run a launcher.
:)

That is what I am guessing. Something with the handling of the memory. Same thing happened to me when running memory intense flash videos.

Hi all,

I never experienced the static noise but I have experienced the following issues on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus:

Phone detail ICS 4.01
Carrier Vodafone
Location UK

Right where do I start!

Firstly, I would like to say that I'm very impressed by the Nexus phone (or should i say handheld computer- as this is how it performs). For many years I was an advocate of Blackberry but defected a few months ago to the Nexus phone. Brilliant choice, I might add!

Since using my phone I have experienced some niggles which I would like to share with you all. Each niggle that I have experienced I have diligently scoured the Internet to see whether this was unique to me or whether others had experienced the same issue. So far I can confirm all of the points that I have listed below have been experienced by others.

Annoying in priority order:

1) There are numerous drop calls, something which I never really experienced before. Same location (my house) and the same carrier (Vodafone) have never been an issue before. I went as far (being somewhat of a geek) putting my sim into my blackberry for a day - perfect reception no drop calls. Plus many have reported the issue. So much so it's been resolved as I type.

2) The second issue, which has so far only happened once, but totally freaked me out! While watching a video on my Nexus the phone shut down for what seemed like an enternity. In reality it was about 15 mins or so. I repeatly pressed the on button but to know avail. I removed the battery several times repeating with the continued hitting of the on button. For all intensive purposes I had reconciled that the phone was dead and that I would have to return the unit, which I have named Josephine. My misses say I spend more time fiddling with it than I do her. So just to throw some fuel on the fire I aptly named it Josephine..lol

Another user also experienced the same issue. Search on 'so I returned my Nexus...long story' for his experience.

3) last but not least after about 15 mins or so of using the phone, and I aways have screen brightness on the lowest setting to preserve the battery, it gets awfully hot near the ear piece. So much so that one time my daughter accidentally touched the screen with her arm after a long run fiddling with Josephine and she flinched by the shock of the heat on her arm. Again other users have reported this issue or should I say point..

Point one would have be a deal breaker if it had not been acknowledge by Samsung, but as it appears to be software an not hardware I'm pre prepared to wait for a fix as it's such a lovely device.. Sorry I mean she's such a lovely device.. Sad, I know to give a phone a name..

So I now have two women in my life that give me trouble. Lol.. Both upgradeable one on one hand is easily upgraded the other thwart with pain and tears.. I prey my misses never sees this post. Lol..

I've experienced more and more reboots, and I've also noticed the device getting really hot to the touch. Just now, I was surfing on wifi with screen brightness at full and the charger plugged in. I checked the stock Android battery info, and it said "76% - not charging". That confused me, so I went and looked at the "battstat" widget's battery info page. It showed "Health: overheat" and listed the battery temperature as 50 degrees C. Alarming to say the least. So perhaps this issue is more a result of a physical temperature threshold and not a memory overload?

In any case, I'm still hoping that it's not a hardware/design issue, and that it can be remedied with software tweaks. Simply browsing the internet while charging should not cause a device to overheat. My Nexus One could handle GPS navigation, phone calls, and music playback all while being charged. It got very hot to the touch but never froze or rebooted itself.

Perhaps there is such a thing as too thin and light? I hope the Samsung engineers weren't out to lunch while they were supposed to be designing the heat dissipation path and mass distribution...
