If the phone has truly never been dropped, then I agree, that sucks. But given that Samsung has sold something like 40 or 50 million of these, it doesn't seem like a widespread problem.
But when the phone has been dropped, it can put stress on the glass that weakens it, and eventually leads to failure. Kind of like a car windshield with a tiny little chip. It can remain a little chip for months, or even years, then suddenly turn into a crack that spreads across the entire windshield. The bigger the screens get the more fragile they become, I think.
