Tried calling Apple but couldn't get through without them wanting to charge me $20 since my phone is out of warranty.

Your going through the wrong channels. I experienced the same issue. You have to find the icloud and software support number. You don't have a warranty issue but you have a general issue with their icloud system. I'm pretty sure on the icloud support site you schedule a call. They send you an email to confirm and then THEY call you.

Worked for me and about an hour later I was the getting every text sent to me.

I had the same problem. Called apple no help. What baffled it wasn't all my iPhone user friends, only a select few. Out of curiosity I checked my friend message settings, it seems now the newer Iphones by default don't have send as text if imessage isn't available checked on. Tell your iPhone friends (I know it's a pain)
Go to settings> messages>turn on send as SMS
And presto, now I'm receiving from those select few their texts. Apple being sneaky (shocker)

I wonder why AC didn't write the tip article for this iMessage problem already. Did they? This iMessage problem quickly escalated to the FAQ level due to many ex-iPhone users, I think. (I myself experienced this when I switched from iPhone 4 to GS4 a year ago because I forgot to turn off the iMessage of my MBP.) I'm saying this because there are lots of new GS5 users switched from iPhone 4S and iPhone 5S according to the telegraph. Most of them would not be familiar both with Galaxy and with Android. Even some simple tips almost all the regular AC readers know well for ages can be useful tips for them. Tons of new Android/GS5 users will search for the good source on the internet for their new phones and now is the perfect time to acquire new audiences for Android Central. Actually here in the forum you can see the flux of former iPhone users just got bought GS5. It would be very smart move for Android Central to write specific articles which cover most helpful topics for Android/GS5 newbies.

I disabled iMessage a few days before I got my S5. For some iPhone friends that was good enough and for others it wasn't. Even if they switched my number in their contact list from 'iPhone' to 'Mobile' it was a crapshoot if it would work. Once I got my S5 I logged into iCloud on my PC and removed my phone and phone number from the device list. After that, zero issues.

I did not have to call Apple Care, I was really sick of those "Genius"-Idiots. So after a lot of research; here are the steps I did which were mostly listed on this thread but a lot of threads out there that I have seen are advise for the ones that were smart enough to consider this mess before they made the switch, I was not one of them:

If you still have the phone:
- Turn off iMessage
- Text STOP to 48369
- Turn off "Find My Phone" > Settings > iCloud > Find My Phone (You can also go to www.iCloud.com to do this as well if you no longer have the phone)
- Log into Apple ID and delete your phone number
- Change Apple ID Password
- Go to Apple Selfserve: https://selfsolve.apple.com/repairstatus/main.do
- Unregister any iPhone under this account
- Most important step: Be patient for up to 48 hours, one of these steps will surely resolve your issue. Don't tell your friends or family to do anything, it really only adds more frustration.

- Last step: Call Apple, Live Chat with them or even go into their store and tell them that they are effing idiots.

Thanks SanDeggo! I changed the password, deleted the phone from my account, and text the # so hopefully things are back to normal. I'll check Monday Like you said, the "geniuses" at the store are clueless.

You are very welcome, I figured I would compile a list of everything I tried. I'm not sure exactly which one of the steps resolved the issue, but non-the-less, I am no longer having any issues receiving text messages from iPhone users. Hope it can help someone else as I was trying to do the "Tell a friend to do this, and this, and this" to no avail. Which I would not want to have to do with over 50 iPhone friends/family I had communication with via iMessage.

All-in-all, brilliant move by Apple. Definitely makes you think, "I just want to give up and go back to an iPhone" for a brief moment.

I really doubt this was to bring people back into Apple. A more plausible reason would be that the default setting to not fall back to sms would potentially save users money by not using their limited sms allowance (yes that still exists).

Starting a new convo didnt work for most of my iPhone friends.

What I found to work for the select iPhone users that were trying to message me and I was not getting them was to have them send the message and then right after hold their finger over the message and select "send as SMS".

They did this for the first 10 or so messages and then it finally kicked in and worked and they no longer had to do that "trick".

I'm not gonna lie, there was a moment of desperation/frustration where I was thinking "this is never going to get resolved, I may need to just turn this phone in and get the iPhone 5S"

I had a few friends do this, but I probably have 50+ contacts that have iPhones. What a pain to have everyone do that! Maybe I just need to create a signature on all my texts: "If you are using an iPhone, please change your settings to send as SMS" :-\

It should not last that long. I had to have 2 friends do this and both said that after about 4 times it kicked in normally. Your milage will vary though. Apple should get this fixed or find a solution so they don' **** off their customers. I went through this with the S4 Active and was pretty hesitant to come back to iPhone after the text problems. The S5 transition was not as bad but still annoying nonetheless.

If you leave the iPhone with no intention of going back and forth, just removing a number from Apple should resolve the issue. For those that go back and forth, like me, the only option is getting others to change the setting in their phone.

The Verizon rep had me turn off iMessaging on my iPhone 5s before we switched anything over. yesterday when I got my S5. I turned iMessaging off on my iPad and my MacBook Pro. I even texted that number to Apple. My Mom has an iPhone & her messages to me are STILL not coming through even 24 hrs later! SUCH a PIA!

So I'm now 2 weeks out with the S5 and STILL not getting texts from iPhone users. Did all the stuff mentioned in the previous posts. Guess I'll have to text all my iPhone using friends and have them change the settings on their phone.

This whole ordeal has made me think that I shouldn't go back to iOS until Apple fixes the problem.
