Galaxy S6 USB connection trouble with Windows 10

@markwasley
I had believed your response might be the best answer on the page......
Unfortunately, that is not correct. There are now new hoops for us all to go through.

My belief was that the S6 was not working on my Win10 devices (my S2 tablet does) which is one of the most weirdest things I've seen in my career.
I tried various USB cables, on 2.0 and 3.0 ports - nada.
It is either Samsung and their S6 devices, it could be the carrier (Verizon in my case) or it could be Marshmallow 6.0....
--- The problem is solved by what Farnal above (and one or two others) stated. We have to get into the developer option and change the option from charging to MTP (media transfer protocol) at which point the Win10 device 'will' recognize your S6....

What a state of affairs we're in. We thought with these latest devices and software, it would be simplicity to manipulate data. But. It appears it ain't so easy... yet.

Agree ... My WDS 10 works perfectly .
NEVER HAVE PROBLEM WITH : Galaxy S6 USB connection trouble with Windows 10

Ok..... created an account on this site to let everyone know what i did to connect my S6 to my windows 10 laptop.

Here is what i did that did not seem to work or at least helped in some way that i don't know of.
-dialed *#0808# and changed to S6 setting to AP and MTP+ADB .... reboot phone
-downloaded some Samsung Galaxy S6 driver online
-downloaded latest intel drivers and windows updates

Here is what did work right away ....
1 - Click windows icon start button
2 - Click Settings
3 - Click Devices
4 - Click AutoPlay (if the options in here are empty or "do nothing" then this is probably the issue)
5 - In the Removable Drive pick from the drop down "Ask me every time"
6 - Plug in your S6 or any cellphone and the dialog box that we all are use to seeing should pop up.

Hope this helps and works for everyone. I won't be checking the forum again so bye.

I get no notifications or error messages of any sort. My S6 doesn't show in File Explorer or the Device Manager. It's like it doesn't exist. W10 really, really, SUCKS!

I shouldn't have to use advanced tweaking that has a lot of potential to screw things up. I'm really po'd that I can't transfer photos from my S6 to PC and vice versa. Never had that problem with W7. If I could switch back to W7 I would, but since this is a new computer that came with W10, I'm stuck with it. W10 really, really bites!

There is a simple fix for non-connecting Galaxy S6 and Win 10. Go into "Settings"... "Developer Options"... Then change "USB Configuration" from "Charging" to "MTP" (Media Transfer Protocol). It connects immediately. You may have to do this every time you connect but it's quick.

I can't find "Developer Options" in Settings.

How to Settings>about phone>scroll down to build number and then tap build number 7 times quickly. Developer options should now appear. You may have to hold the MTP option instead of tapping it to make it the active USB option.

I found it, tried it, it couldn't get it to switch to MTP. Then the phone started acting haywire, flashing a purple screen every time I touched the screen, and a different looking bar was now across the top of the screen. I turned Developer Mode off, then it returned to normal.

At the core of my angst is I wanted to get photos I took with the phone to my desktop pc. I don't take tons of pictures, so the work-around I figured out is to simply attach them to a message and sent it to myself via email. I just tried it, works ok. Thanks for your help!

I turned the Developer Options off, but how do I get it to not appear anymore?

Same Pproblem Getting Windows 10 to recognize Samsung Galaxy S5
I log off of User & Logged into Admin on Windows 10 & the Device mounted Immediately..

So what Settings can I change to allow a USB device to Mount.. my other harddrive mounted under regular WIN 10 user with no issues..

@farnal Thank you! After getting a recent S6 update all the sudden was having issues accessing my phone from my PC. Went online to look for a quick solution and you gave it to me. Thanks again!

My Samsung S6 edge used to be ok with windows 10. Then i had to resinstall. The orignial install was an update from windows 8.1. This worked because windows media pack was installed. To fix the problem i had to download and install Windows media feature pack for windows 10.
I found this out when i installed a complete windows 10, the N version.

So all started working again fine, until two or three days ago when Microsoft updated windows 10. Its all fubar again. Windows media pack is installed. Its just not working. If you go to your device manager you will see a crappy unrecognised driver. This is the phone driver. not working anymore.

So no advice but at ;east steps to get it working of your not on my windows 10 N vesion.

YES DAMMIT! FU MICROSOFT! My wife has an S6, I have a Note 4 and up until last week or so (I don't plug in my phone often) it was working just. BLOODY. FINE. Now not so much. I'll try and find a solution (I found one before, but thought I had it solved...)

Someone posted part of my solution here (Samsung Galaxy S6 phone):

From the Windows start menu type "cmd", then use the context menu to select "Run as Administrator".
In the command console type "net localgroup administrators local service /add"
If all goes well you'll see "The command completed successfully."

This part worked as far as showing my phone in the This PC section-->but once clicked nothing.

The solution was rather simple, after entering the cmd script.

1. Slide down on your phone
2. Select "Use USB" for File Transfers and wa-la, problem solved.

Hope this helps others.

Didn't work for me.

I'm connecting to my laptop using the original Samsung USB cable and the connection just bounces every second or so.

Things I've tried so far...

1. The above ^ net command thing...ran successfully but didn't fix the connection issue.
2. Reinstalling drivers all over the place. Including Smart Switch and SideSync.
3. Reinstalling all USB drivers.
4. Resetting the USB Hub which also resets Bluetooth for some reason.
5. Disabling the USB sleep polling interrupt through the settings. Again that worked for some but not for me.

There are some weird bugs with Win 10...on my home Desktop all the MS apps have completely stopped working; Store, Groove etc. You can click the icons forever and nothing happens. My Laptop...fine. Both have the same updates and I don't have time or the inclination to investigate MS's stupidity. I'm glad Gates has left. Maybe they'll employ people who can actually code reliably...personally I think they should junk Windows and start again.

Here's the latest I've found on this BS. I still think it's BS because the average user should not have to go through complicated configurations to do this. My wife was reading the manual and it said something about Smart Switch to transfer pictures from cell to desktop. I d/l it but it wouldn't work, said the USB configuration was in the wrong mode. I remembered seeing that in Developer options. To cut to the chase, here's the instructions I typed out so my wife could understand exactly what to do. The average user shouldn't have to do this. Not sure where to lay the blame, Samsung or Microsoft, but the S6 is getting to be as much of a POC as W10.

HOW TO TRANSFER PICTURES FROM YOUR CELL PHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER.

Plug your cell into a USB port on your computer using the charge cord that came with your cell phone. This has to be done first or the rest of the instructions won’t work.

On your cell, tap Settings.

Scroll down to Developer Options and tap it. (NOTE: If you've never activated Developer Options, you'll see "Build Number" instead. Tap it 7 times quickly to activate Developer Options. Nice, huh?)

At the top where it says On, there’s an ON/OFF switch on the right, turn it to On if it isn’t already.

NOTE: BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH ANY OF THE OTHER OPTIONS! (Unless you're sure of what you're doing, e.g. I found out why my wife's cell wouldn't sleep, the Stay Awake option was set to On. How it got that way I don't know, but I know my wife wouldn't have messed with it, she doesn't even mess with the settings).

Scroll down to USB configuration and tap on it.

Tap on PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol)

Now go back to your desktop computer and open the File Directory.

Go to SAMSUNG-SM-G920V/Phone/DCIM/Camera

Your pictures and videos will be in the Camera directory. Cut and past the ones you want to your desktop computer.

Once you unplug the cell phone, the USB configuration option will change back to Charging and you have to go through the entire process again in order to get pictures from your cell phone to your desktop.

NOTE: You can also use the Smart Switch software to backup your cell, including pics, then go retrieve them from the backup directory, but you still have to go into the Developer options to change the USB configuration, but to MTP instead of PTP! Then, you have to find the pics buried in several layers of sub-directories!

Do I-phone users have to go through all this hassle? If not, maybe my next cell will be an I-phone!
