Gallery isn't populating with images on the "SD Card"

Hello All,

I've searched high and low and cannot find a solution to this problem. The other day I wiped my phone for various reasons. Ever since I did the wipe the gallery does not display any of the images that are already stored on the device. If I take a new picture it will go right into the /sdcard/DCIM/Camera directory and it will display in the gallery. Same thing happens if I download a picture it will go into /sdcard/Download and will display in the gallery.

However, any of the images that are already in any of the folders on my sdcard do not show up in the gallery. Is there a way to force the gallery to scan the sdcard or something? Thanks in advance.

When I transferred pics from my computer I took entire folders and copied them to the Pictures folder on the phone. When I go into gallery every one of the folders appears. Funny thing is that they are in reverse order of when they were taken. I have since found a new app called QuickPic that is a gallery app and has the pics in the right order.

So maybe I should try moving the stuff to my computer and back. It really doesn't make sense because new pictures go into the exact same folders and show up in the gallery but new stuff doesn't.

There's gotta be a way to get the device to "scan media" or something.

Try going to settings>apps find Gallery (under the ALL tab) and clear data. It wont delete you pictures but will force the gallery to re-index them all.

I have the same problem. I am having this problem AND when I connect my phone via usb to my PC I can only few the 'media' folders. Folders like pictures, music, videos, downloads. However it does not show all of the 'sd card' folders. I am missing folders that I have created and folder that apps have created. They are still there but I can only access them through root explorer.

This seems like an 'sd card problem' because it doesn't show the sd card contents in gallery and under the internal storage when connected to the PC via usb.

Anyone else notice these two problems?

Sounds like you're rooted...try rebooting into recovery and clear you cache.

It's a developer phone. Bound to have some bugs. Get over it.

As another person mentioned, clear gallery data

Also, clearing "Media Storage" data helps too (especially when you add .nomedia files)

Another option is to use my favorite gallery app JustPictures

So... because it's a "developer phone" you shouldn't look for solutions to problems? Anyway... none of those suggestions worked. I'll just grab a third party app for now. Thanks guys.

nevermind, I had top sync the pictures.

Sounds to me like when the OP wiped the phone it deleted all the pix. It may have left the empty folders. That's what happened with my HTC Incredible when it pushed me the GB update. Why didn't anyone consider that?

No, the pictures are there. If you browse to sdcard/DCIM/Camera every photo's in the directory.

After clearing Media Storage and both caches it also got rid of any existing pictures in the gallery.

Long story short the gallery isn't re-scanning for existing media.

The "Love" signature block didn't give away the sarcasm? The fact that I referred to myself as the Android Central Form Apologist didn't work either? Man.

I just got hit with this problem today. I'd cleared my gallery data (for an unrelated reason) and ever since then, none of my camera pics (or other app pics that previously had folders, such as instagram or foursquare) show up. It seems to also have affected all of my custom ringtones/notification sounds as well. So it's definitely a matter of the phone not rescanning "sdcard" media. I don't know much about MTP since this is my first phone without actual removable storage. If I take a new pic it will show up, but the ones that were already in the camera folder only can be accessed with a file explorer like Astro. :'(

I haven't had the problem since I updated to 4.04.

I've tried SDrescan already, it wasn't any help. I even tried moving the files off the phone and back on in the hopes that the phone might realize they're "new".

Well perhaps as Rudolphe said, the problem might clear up with 4.04. I sure hope so because I've missed calls from people who I have custom ringtones set for that were the audio files no longer being indexed.
