I've been checking the battery meter lately and have noticed that the Gallery app is always the highest item on the list, usually taking between 40-55% juice.

Anyone else notice this? Have any idea why? I've tried force closing it but it seems to come back.

Someone in the Optimus S forum stated they were having the same issue. Could there be something running in the background that uses the gallery?

I'm using Launcher Pro Plus and my phone is rooted if that helps diagnose the problem.

Thanks!

do you have retro camera installed. I've been trying to figure this out too and it seems like the gallery usage goes down every time i remove this app from my home screen.

I noticed the same thing with gallery! I installed JuiceDefender but I still haven't noticed a difference with Gallery. (Although, JD really helped grad some extra hours for me!) Looking for more input on this...

Same issue here....my phone is NOT rooted and am using the stock launcher...NOT using JD or any battery saving app yet.

It seems even after I force quit gallery in the manage apps settings, that it will still show up in the battery usage settings..

FWIW, not having this issue on a stock install myself. I do use the Gallery and I never force quit it. I also have it set to sync my Picasa albums. I'd have to agree with pspurlin, seems like another application must be involved.

Anyone still having this problem? I forced closed my gallery and now it doesn't show in the list. It just took some time for it to clear out of the status list. I just wouldn't think that you should have to force stop the gallery everytime you use it?

i had this problem also. installed juicedefender and it stopped the gallery problem. battery life is a lot better!

u can configure jd to kill the apps i have jd ultimatejuice n the whole nights n weekends setting its great it easily doubled my battery lifetime .. i found task killers to be more of a battery killers .. i just go on my own n kill every task personally why have an app do it for u.. even if it gets the job done its constantly looking at the running services n bringing them up when u wake ur phone n shutting them down when ur phone is on standby.. that means every app even the onces u dont use come up again n again..

I have the same problem on an Optimus-V, stock distribution. I did not used to have it -- Cell Phone standby was always the top power consumer, and "Gallery" never showed up.

Now Gallery has been at the top, around 45%, even when not listed as a running app.

Two likely culprits: Live Wallpaper and Picasa sync. Someone else claims to have Picasa sync enabled without the problem, though background syncing seems a likely candidate.

Turned off Live Wallpaper and Gallery is now in second place at 21%, based on 20m of running. (Behind Cell Standby at 31%.) Better, but not back to where I used to be.

Turned off Picasa sync after looking for how to do this (Settings -> Accounts & Sync -> Google). Gallery is still 23% after 3m, and 35% after 20m.

Killed Gallery using Manage Applications. Gallery is still 31% after 17m. (Compare Cell Standby at 31% with barely 1 bar of signal.)

So.... what is invoking Gallery, and what is it doing to use this much power?

More troubleshooting data:

Reboot.
1. After 39m, top power use is Cell Standby at 58%. Gallery does not appear. :-)
2. Enable Live Wallpaper. After 10m, it's Cell Standby at 39%. Gallery does not appear.
3. Disable Live Wallpaper. Enable Picasa sync. After 56m, Cell Standby at 59%. Gallery does not appear.
4. Disable Picasa sync. Run Pandora. After 27m, Cell Standby 46%. Gallery does not appear.
5. Launch Gallery. Home. After 10m, Cell Standby 42%. Gallery does not appear.

So I'll just have to wait for it to happen again.
