gear 2 application challenge

Land/walking navigation of some sort. Would be ultra useful to those visiting an unfamiliar city without having to glue your eyes to a cell phone (in places like NYC, perps find tourists with their head down looking at their phones as opportune targets). A glance at the watch would be great for this.

A keyboard (w/ prediction and auto correct). There's a thread in this forum that Fleksy is not even close to being available, if it is ever released at all. This is good for those times that you're in a meeting and receive a text that requires immediate attention, but can't quite excuse yourself.

The Sony smart watch has both of the above so they can be done (Google Maps and an SMS Composer). While not the silkiest implementations, they were effective when needed. I can only imagine how much smoother they would be on a powerhouse like the G2.

Samsung just released open source code. How about a rom that has elegant transition effects? A watch face with transitioning weather? The ability to tell your watch where you parked, followed by turn by turn walking on watch. Come on developers! :).

The challenge started today for 6 weeks. Developers will upload their apps during this period and will be available to you right away ..Then some developers will get the chance to improve selected apps for extra prizes. Samsung goal is to bring 200+ apps to you. Lets see how things will go during this period.

I will try to fulfill few wishes from here ... those I can develop and according to my free time

Also, one developer will win grad prize for users favorite app.. so you can decide by rating I guess :)

I recommend you download the apps right away during this period. Some apps might become paid after the challenge is over ;)

I'd like to see a daily Bible verse to ponder. And yes, the same from other Holy books for persons of other faiths. And even daily inspirational messages that can reach out to all people.

Fitness apps that are accurate.

-Half of my exercising isnt really trackable with my gear 2 neo. An app that continually measure hear rate and calculates calorie burn off of that would be great, instead of however Samsung does it. Someone who does P90x or other programs or classes receive little benefit from the built in apps. Not to mention my $20 HRM was more accurate, not sure if that can be fixed with an app vs hardware or firmware.

- A fitness app that syncs accurate exercise data to MyFitnessPal.

For a good list of things this watch should be capable of Look at the Atlas fitness tracker.
Atlas Wearables | Atlas Fitness Tracker | Activity Tracker
"Atlas measures your heart rate, calculates the calories you burned and tracks your body on the x-, y- and z-axes, so it knows how many laps you swam and if you did push-ups or triangle push-ups. It’s preloaded with the most popular exercises and can learn new exercises you teach it so you can instantly see your progress, analyze your form, anticipate plateaus and find what makes you stronger, faster."

It seems to me that the Gear 2 has all of the ability to measure the same metrics.

If you're taking requests. ... I think it would be cool to be able to have the capability for controlling the phones video recording app, camera app, along with the voice recoding app as long as the phone is within range. .. remotely from the watch.

I record our choir at our church so that they can hear back how they sound with my phone. And it'd be neat to be able to do this 10 to 20 feet away remotely.

Do you think or know If this is possible?

I use you version on my phone, and it would be nice to look at the watch to see a daily encouragement or an uplifting verse. It sure beats all the ugly in the world today.

I too agree with a daily verse, to glance at on the watch.

@swade8

It depends on Gear bluethooth range. Bluethooth somehow limited in distance and data reliability (in case of many people front of you)
Gear 2 does not support wifi data transfer.

Gear sends request to your phone. Background service or App takes the order and do camera stuff. Gear just send the order.. the rest of the coding is actually android code

I have not coded any camera app for android but I assume it is possible. This kind of app that can win a grand prize cuz it is not simple to do but not very hard as well :)

I loved my previous watch, but I hated wearing the watch and a fitbit. I am so glad to have a watch that can do what the fitbit did and more.

That said, the reason I loved my old watch is because of its functions. At a glance, I could see through graphics the sun rise/set and moon rise/set. It also did alot more. I used it to inform me for stargazing. See this website for all it could do. http://www.yeswatch.com/wrist-watch/timekeeper/luna.html?id=w4Nr7jHA

If you could design an app that does this, I would be in seventh heaven, and I would be happy to pay for it!

Hi,
I am tizen/android developer and I was reading some topics in this forum and I noticed that some users complain about lack of apps for Gear 2.

Well, here is the good news, Samsung announced Gear 2 Developer Challenge next month with total prize $1,250,000

Samsung Wearables

So, many apps will be coming next 2-3 months

Can you suggest apps? I would be great for us - the developers -!! :)

Just got the Gear 2 after having the original Gear and noticed that my beloved Evernote app is missing in action. I think there's a very big audience out there for it if you want to go for that. I'd be very happy too of course.

1; Smartphone Camera viewer and Remote shutter, both still shots and video would be nice.
2; Application keyboard extension such as for Chat type apps.
3; Game sensor or simulation apps in addition to ones on Smartphone, for example, if when playing a Game on Phone the sensors on Neo smartwatch can be used in addition to add to realism and better control.
4; Diabetic Health apps of many such as reminders to take insulin, check blood sugars, and inclusion of health stats as BPM and HBM or?? the sky's the limit on this one! and large audience ready and interested, even "Insulin Pump" communications with Neo smartwatch is possible as BT is built into some "Insulin Pumps"
5; Child Distance Alert smartwatch warning app with the addition of "BT-Child Module" and BT Pairing with Smartphone to go off when signal is lost or reaches certain limit the user can set? 1M, 5M or 10M? and option for more than one "BT-Child Module" .
6; Remote Projector controls or HDMI device such as Chromecast?
7; other feature that are on traditional digital watches such as altimeter, GPS coordinates, compass or heading indicators.
8; BT Automotive communication functions, such as Key entry, trunk release etc, OBD viewer?
9; BT smartgear controls like Smart-LED bulbs, and AC control switches (on-off)
This is just off the top of my head, I made a list years ago that I will look at and see if I can add more items. :)
10; Photo light sensor app to be used by SLR Photographers? or other Light sensing apps as an accessory to other things?

No sorry, I don't know the math behind these watches.. If I have time.. I will look for it

@LowIQ

Very advanced features indeed. Samsung should think about some of them... The game control could be fun ! Gear Wii :)

Maybe a heart rate zone trainer (that's accurate). A simple interface with continuous heart rate that has a long vibration when you need to slow down, or pulses to speed up to stay in your zone.

When I'm moving the "Heart Rate" app has a hard time giving an accurate reading, as you would need a "Chest" heart rate monitor as the wrist is a bad place for that and why sometimes it gets erroneous readings, as the technology of sensors improve that may be minimized but until then we have to deal with the quirks? probably the same issues with Blood Pressure?

As being hard of hearing, this watch is a godsend. No more awkward phone ringing off in my pockets and everyone has to tell me that's it's my phone. Lol.

Now for a good App that could be very useful is a TV Closed Caption enable/disable remote. This can benefit anyone who wants to turn it on, or off, without fumbling for the remote finding the button or going thru the TV menu.

Please tell me this is doable! Now who wants to do it? :)
