Gear S2 - WiFi - What are the benefits?

Hello,

I just purchased a refurb Gear S2 (3g-refurb). The watch works great and I don't plan on signing up for a contract since it works perfectly fine while connected via bluetooth. My question is about Wi-Fi. Several posts recommend turning Wi-Fi off to help save battery life. Since everything works fine while on bluetooth, why would I even want Wi-Fi turned on? Are there any benefits to having Wi-Fi on? Does it load ESPN or CNN any faster? Or does it simply extend the range if I have my phone in one room and walk further away from the bluetooth range?

My take is, the 3g watch is capable of standalone operation for phone calls, so having wifi would allow internet access without a cellphone being connected. You use yours the same as I do so, yes, wifi doesn't really add anything that I can see.

Wifi will enable you to receive notifications on the watch when you are out of range of the bluetooth.

This is the biggest benefit I've found. My watch is normally connected to my phone via bluetooth. However, if I've connected both to the same wifi network and I walk away from my phone the watch automatically switches over to wifi to keep the two connected. Walk back into range and it automatically switches back to the bluetooth connection. Works great!

What's the battery impact of keeping wifi turned on?

I just bought a 3g refurbed S2 to replace my broken Pebble Steel. Loving it so far. I just wish it vibrated better.

Same here (and I used it when I sent the Gear back to Samsung to repair the screen).

If you haven't found this setting yet, you CAN increase the vibration intensity on the Gear: Settings > Sound > Vibration > Intensity > Strong.

Thanks for the info. It's set at Strong now. I can barely feel it unless I'm waiting for it, and if I'm driving the car it gets lost in the background vibrations. But enabling the speaker with a small beeping sound really helps. Now I hear the beep and feel the vibration. Funny how that works.
