I'm expecting the Atrix in a fews days, however, per some reviews I see that AT&T has done some things that would quickly turn me off as a new Android user. I want to be able to utilize the phone to its fullest potential. I have read about Rooting and Sideloading, but I am quite apprehensive about either or. Like I said, I dont want to be bound by my carrier. PLEASE HELP. Some essential guidance would be awesome, becasue I'm super excited about the phone given that I'm leaving from An LG Neon (AKA: LG P.O.S.), but all this talk of Rooting and Sideloading confuses me and thus makes my brain hurt a tad. :)

Well what do you want to know bud? The phone can be rooted. And Since AT&T doesnt allow non-market apps to be installed, you have to sideload them with the Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine. Its fairly easy.

I want to be able to use any app I want. I heard that the MoroBlur isnt good, so I want to remedy that. I saw someone with a ROM on theirs that was pretty cool. Basically I want to use any of the Apps I want, and I would like to be able to customize my Atrix how I want it as opposed to the standard, but I've heard that their are some risks to rooting. I want to know is it really worth it, and if so, what benefit do I reap from it, how do I do? Lastly, I keep coming across the terms ROM and Sideloading. All three of these terms run together on me. Could you distinguish them from one another please? Honestly I dont know whether I wanna Root, Get a ROM or Sideload.

i always wonder a bit when new posters ask and phrase exactly the right questions that moto/att engineers might want to know.

either way, concise first posts gteddy89

Ok, you can use most apps out there. Some carriers block a few so you would side load them, which is downloading the app file from somewhere other than the android market. AT&T blocks side loading, but you can bypass that with side load wonder(search this site, might be called something else) which is very user friendly. Rooting is simply unlocking your phone so you can load custome ROMs and more advance functions, kind of like admin rights in windows. There are no true roms on the Atrix, they are more like themes. You can fully customize your screens without rooting, and cover up MotoBlur if you want with another launcher. Lots to do for beginners before rooting. If you are interested in very user friendly(dumbed down) rooting and ROMing, then you might be better off with HTC Inspire. Atrix is better phone IMO though and you will be very happy with or without rooting. Welcome to Android.

Oops, I forgot, the two biggest complaints you will hear are probably MotoBlur and upload speeds. MotoBlur is all about wether you like it or not, if not then install a new launcher app and problem solved. As far as upload speeds, AT&T has promised a fix that was supposed to be released last month. The upload speeds are slow, but in most day to day uses, you should not be bothered with it. Most people are upset by the principle of the situation, they capped us but not iPhones. Any speed is welcome, but the speeds now are tolerable.
