Gingerbread NOW available

hmm. Ok so I got z4root onto my sd card and am running it. unfortunately the "wheel" icon has been spinning for several minutes now with "running exploit in order to obtain root access" at bottom of screen.

Is this normal to take this long and how long should it "spin" before I try something else?

Why would you use backup assistant when all of your contacts are stored in your google account anyways? I always press skip when it asks you to setup the backup assistant.

So far my battery life seems significantly better on gingerbread than froyo.

i didn't set it up ever since i installed gb its been there ..

If it takes more then a couple of mins, do a battery pull, then run it again. It may take a couple of tries, but it will work.

Ok, I have apex installed....can someone please walk me through the install of rooted GB step by step for a dumby like me?

Thanks

Haven't been able to find a consistant way of doing this from any forum. Some say all you need to do is flash it like any other rom..

1. Use Bootstrap
2. Wipe data and cache
3. Load the file from your SD Card and your good to go

Others claiming got to sbf back to stock first and follow there directions...

If thats the case i'll be waiting not 100% sure how to sbf... and not willing to take the risk

Thanks for the reply..So Ive got z4root on and am rooted. I also downloaded ROM manager and put the GB unzippped file on my sd card.

On ROM manager i clicked "install ROM from SD card" and clicked "dxgbrooted/"

I now see:
meta-inf/
system/
utils/

unfortunately, none of these seem to take me anywhere. Any sugestions?

Ok. I think I need to pay for and download bootstrap from the market. Is this correct??

I installed the TBH rooted version (which is the same as the one at MDW) and have had zero issues so far. Gotta say - GB is slick. Fast, stable, and the improved transitions, blur widgets, and new notification bar are all really nice. Just downloaded and installed D2 Bootstrapper and Titanium and am restoring all system apps (w/data).

What I did when I first installed the Froyo OTA (2.2.340) was root, grab bootstrap and make a backup. I just flashed that (was weird to see all those blur widgets - ha), went back into recovery, wiped everything (battery stats, Dalvik, cache partition), did a factory reset, flashed the TBH rooted GB and it booted right up without a problem.

EDIT:

I also have this, but did a full wipe before flashing and skipped the sync when setting up. Anyone?

EDIT #2: I shouldn't have signed into the stock email at setup. Don't know what I was thinking - been on K-9 for months. It was polling my crap hotmail every 5 minutes. Problem solved.

EDIT #3: I went to work with Titanium, all apps restored w/data, switched home launcher to LP+ (the 3D app drawer was unstable, but I haven't run the latest update - 2D is fine), froze all bloat (although you can actually permanently delete now with that exploit, but I figured I'd keep it just in case), put all widgets back in. Everything seems to be okay. I love the new dialer - looks really nice. Of course, all this restoring, widgeting, installing, downloading, etc, wiped my battery completely out, but still - REALLY liking what I'm seeing so far here.

So if I am running Rubix I should go back to FROYO (OTA), rooted, make a back up and flash GB root?

Now questions: How do I go back to FROYO?
So is GB better than Rubix?

Can I get verification on this from someone?

As far as I know you need to go back to Froyo OTA (2.2.340) in order to flash the rooted GB safely. Someone please correct me if this is wrong. That means unless you made a backup of it you'll need to use RSD Lite and run the SBF to get back to stock from RubiX - There are downloads to the softwares at the link in the OP of this thread. If you don't know about RSD Lite, there are tutorials everywhere, but I found a pretty good one HERE. I think some of the software it links to has been updated to more recent versions, though. Could someone help with a more recent link here? I couldn't seem to find one specific to Froyo 2.2.340.

After you do that, download the Z4Root HERE and install. Root the Froyo. Hit the market and get Bootstrapper. Boot into recovery and make a backup of this so you have it in the future. From there it should be smooth sailing - just follow the instruction in the OP.

And as far as RubiX vs. GB goes, I think it's subjective - They're different animals. RubiX is totally Blur-free and lightning fast with killer battery life, but rooted GB is one helluva great stock build - better than most people expected, I'd wager. There's all the blur and bloat, but who cares? If you have Titanium Backup, just freeze it and you'll never see it again. It's really snappy and I love the look of it. I find myself really enjoying the stock launcher and some of the new blur isn't bad at all. They really did a great job. I just hope Fab, Drod, Kejar, and Jrummy hit us off with a GB-specific ROMs :D

P3Droid said on Twitter when someone asked him this: "what if we are running a rom...should we still sbf?" (i.e. go back to stock froyo)
P3Droid: Skip the SBF then
See Twitter Link Here: Twitter / P3Droid: @brttwrd7 skip the sbf then

Basically he means that if you're on the 2.3.340 firmware, which you should be if you're running Rubix, you can wipe data/cache/factory reset and then install Gingerbread. That's what I did and it worked fine...I did factory reset one more time after I installed it though. Just seemed like a good idea.

Here is how to get back to stock, i.e. 2.2.1/firmware 2.3.340: Complete Droid X .sbf Flashing Guide That has steps for both Windows and Linux. I found the Linux steps infinitely easier since I <3 Linux and I don't have to mess around trying to get Windows to recognize my phone, which sometimes it just won't do.

Gingerbread is faster than Rubix, in my opinion. Despite Blur being sexier, I still sort of hate it, so when it gets de-blurred by the awesome ROM-ing community, I'll be going that direction. You'll have to decide for yourself :) It is fun to mess around with though!

Hope this helps.

Edit: Bald Steve beat me to this, hehe...I am pretty sure though based on P3Droid's advice that you don't have to SBF all the way back to stock and reroot. I think the idea behind telling everyone to SBF is assuming that they installed the unrooted GB leak from last night, in which case you would absolutely have to SBF (which is what I did, and god have I learned 500 new things about my phone in 24 hours because of it) but good luck! Either way, it couldn't hurt to SBF.

Ha - When I bricked the first time I had to SBF with RSD Lite and it was a great learning experience, too. I was freaked doing it, but glad it happened. And you're right - looks like flashing right over RubiX is cool. Hey, if anyone bricks at least there are now links to the RSD/SBF/Z4Root stuff all in one place

So if I reading this right, and I'm on apex, I should be able to go right over top of it and on to GB....so Miami you first or me? :)

Noob just rooted!!

Just rooted for the first time and like most things in life it was easier than it sounded or looked!!

For other noobies like me out there this is what I did:

Downloaded bootstrap from market onto X
Download z4root onto Mac, dragged into sd card on phone ("my" download folder)
ran z4root and clicked permanent root
dragged zipped Ginger bread onto sd card ("my" download folder)
opened bootstrap and followed video instructions on utube

Done, rooted!! Seriously!

The utube walkthroughs were a great help.
I've been an android fan for sometime now but never quite had the courage to root and am really excited to further my education and tinkering on my X!

Thanks for all the post and tips

Sometimes it takes more than one try and I will reboot between attempts. Funny thing with this ROM though was that it never rebooted after the exploit for me, and yet it was successful. So you may want to check if it is in fact rooted after you have tried it.

After rooting and adjusting the cpu min/max I am thinking that I liked the stock feel a bit better. Benchmarks the same but somehow it seems to feel heavier with my 600/1000 setting. Hmm do you think the default is to run the CPU at 1000/1000?

Vista hates RSD. What to do? Sold my laptop that I used for fixing when I brick. Hmmmm. Anyone know how to get this to work on vista?

It goes a lot quicker for this build so you wont be sitting there long while it's doing it's thing. ;-)
You were right. Was much faster than I'm used to seeing. but my phone started bootlooping, so I had to boot into recovery and do a factory reset. Everything was fine after that.

PC mode

Alright, I tried a combination of things. I switched to PC mode, then went to my original file for RSD and did a repair on the program and when the repair was completed, it recognized my phone. Now the phone is back to normal and I'm getting ready to go through the process of getting gingerbread back onto the phone.
