Hi guys, Im sorry if this has been posted elsewhere but I was just messing with the built in wifi tethering on Gingerbread OTA (4.5.588) since root is not available yet. I have wifi tethering working on my droid x. The way I did this was to go into the mobile wifi hotspot settings, turn on the mobile wifi hotspot, once the mobile hotspot is connected, configure the wifi hotspot and change the client dhcp start address. Mine seems to be working using 192.168.42.100. It should ask to restart the mobile hotspot, chose yes. It may restart the 3G connection 4-5 times and then it should work. If it matters I also disabled encryption and have my phone connected to the charger. I verified this twice after power cycling the phone.

I know this is similar to that in the leaked build but for me turning on and off the wifi tethering and waiting still wouldnt work for me under this build.

Or I could just continue using the method outlined above and not have to pay.

You haven't been following the forums and heard what Verizon is going to start doing to root users who tether without paying for a tethering plan, have you?

You'll get what you deserve, sooner or later.

I would take this warning seriously. All of the carriers will start to crack down soon.

I love how there weren't too many people talking about free tethering as "stealing" until all this news about Verizon cracking down came out. All of a sudden NOW it's stealing? I bet most of those accusing others of stealing have used free wifi tether themselves at one point.

Note: I am rooted, but I do not tether. I haven't ever had a need to. I just find the hypocrisy amusing.

Hypocrisy? I haven't used tethering. I have no need for it.

Then STFU. Tons of people tether. Its their choice. If you do not like it, then do not do it. Just out of curiosity, does it make you feel important to crack down on the people on this forum that do enjoy the benefits of a rooted android?

I had to edit my post because I was reading around in the forum and noticed a trend. ultravisitor, what is your problem? I know its frustrating at times when someone asks questions about things that have been covered multiple times, but if it bothers you, why must you bash people and insult them? If you have no idea what I am talking about, then your probably as big of an a$$ as I think you are. Take care.

It's a touchy subject, and I think most of us don't care much, but when carriers crack down, and manufactures lock down devices to "prevent" TOS violations, it's easy to see why the community frowns on it. It is certainly easy to steal tether, but those days are limited. I understand both arguments, and I hope we can use android freely as we will, but when we fly our finger at the carriers by what we can accomplish with hacking the network, and then those of us respecting that, and hacking for performance reasons and customizations, simply don't want to be on that train, but we all are.

"Benefits"? Are the tracking of rooted users and the continued manufacturing of locked down devices benefits? You realize that's what's happening because of the people who are breaching their contracts by tethering without plans, right? As Johnly pointed out, some people just root for customization purposes but are affected when carriers crack down on all root users.

People can do what they want. I hope that people understand the choices that they're making. And I hope they don't complain if carriers take action against them if they are in breach of contract.

That's the problem. I am rooted, but I don't tether (I have the app, but only for emergency situations; if I need to tether for more than 5 minutes I'll call Verizon and pay the $20). Seeing as I am not in breach of contract, I will take great offense if I am punished simply because I like to customize my phone.

And that whole "Blame the people that steal for your punishment" idea doesn't fly with me. Big Red knows exactly who is stealing. Punish them, and leave me alone.

Im still on 4.5.5.7 something but I pay the $20 a month for tendering but it hasn't worked ever since I updated.

I've not seen so much fear mongering since Y2K.. If anyone thinks something horrible is going to happen to anyone with that activates wireless than think some more.

Yeah, Verizon is going to flip a switch and your Droid is going to self destruct and blow off your ear and whatever hand is holding it...

Get a life people and quit adjudicating/pontificating doom and gloom.
