Gingerbread Update Pros and Cons

Task killers are unnecessary because of the way android os runs whether froyo or gingerbread. Even apps that do not have an exit or logout option will only run in the background for a limited time before the os pushes them out (unless they are still being used). it actually makes the system run slower to use a taskkiller because it forces the slow reinstall of vital operations.

The only reason to force close something is if it is not working properly.

On another note, am I the only person that has removed the half-screen weather clock widget? Do I really need to see a graphic of the moon at noon because the damn thing hasn't properly synced in eight hours?

I leave it because I feel like a time traveler.

I just updated to the GB update and the only thing i can see that is weird is that i have the old market app and it won't update to the new one. The market also doesn't list all my apps anymore. Other than that, it seems alot faster and smoother.

I got the GB update this morning and I wondering a couple of things. If I need to do a factory reset, will it revert back to Froyo? Should I keep the downloaded update file on the phone just in case? Or is it safe to delete it now? Tried to figure out if the file was saved on the internal memory or the SD card but couldn't tell for sure. I tried searching the contents of the SD card from my computer and didn't find anything that size. And there didn't appear to be an option to move the file to the card.

I never really liked the stock weather clock widget. I replaced it with the SiMi Clock widget which offers more function and looks nice and clean.

I noticed that the HTC Calendar widget still has the problem it did before the GB update where it still shows the previous day's date for the first half of the day. So, I replaced it with "Simple Calendar" widget which also compliments the SiMi Clock widget and now I am much happier.

If any one could answer this it would be appreciated. The update left a file on the phone it is 106mb can it be deleted or does it need to stay? If you go to the new download app you will see it in there.

When I still had my Inspire, I used the leaked RUU update file posted on XDA and everything ran just fine, however it does wipe your phone when it installs.

Personally I would reccomend anyone who does the OTA to do a factory reset after it installs just to make sure everything is reset and all the old stuff is removed.

I know with the Motorola Atrix people commented on the same thing. After doing the GB OTA some people had some quirks. Doing a factory reset afterwards seemed to make things smooth again.

I only had about 20 apps installed, which I manually redownloaded afterwards. I don't really care much to back up programs being as when you restore them it just doesn't seem as fresh as reinstalling from scratch.

I have noticed that now in the Android Market, when I go to update an app, it says it's "downloading" forever and never actually updates the app. This is really annoying.

Mine has been doing that sort of thing ever since the update to the "new and improved" market. But mine gets stuck on installing. It does install, per the notification bar, but in the market it still shows that it is installing. I just close it.

I agree with you about the new app drawer. I hate how it's blocked off like that, I much rathered it when it was free scrolling. Not a big deal or anything, but just what I prefered. Other then that the new update is just fine to me, and my battery life is soooo much better.

As far as the app drawer is concerned, you can change it to display as a list, rather than grid. I know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but it might work.

Well I updated to gingerbread lastnight. It actually messed up my phone. I disabled tha vibrationsfor when you type.. it still does, its very annoying. & I thought it was suposta help battery life or something. Well I actually think it didn't help at all, in fact made battery life worse. Maybe because I cant take vibrations off. Someone help.....

Not 100% sure it will help, but consider doing a 30 second battery pull. My battery performance has been a whole lot better from Froyo.

Also wanted to add I love the new battery life. I was fully charged at 0800 yesterday morning. Now at 1510 today I'm at 4% .

Huge pro is you can drag a widget over icons and they will switch places on the home screen.

I've been checking my HTC WiFi update continuously since Monday and it still says my phone has no new updates. If you upgrade thru the WiFi, do you still lose everything on the phone, and is that only what's in the phone memory? Should I unmount my SD card before updating? (if it ever shows up in my WiFi updates)...

You lose nothing if you do it over Wi-Fi, only if you do it thru your PC.

I love that shotcuts and widgets now push each other out of the way when you move them around the home screens.
