Gingerbread Update: Reliable Information Only Please

So far at my store, we were told not til mid august. This was from a htc rep. Testing starts this week, they couldn't do it until the mr2 update went through.

All due respect.. but.. According to you just because it wasn't made by Motorola it is "Just another Android phone". So because Motorola just happened to call their phone a droid its the original? If I remember right the HTC Dream was the first Android based smartphone, not the droid.

In the respect that the Thunderbolt is the FIRST 4g lte smartphone for Verizon I would say that it is in many ways more of a "flagship" phone than any of the droid phones.

Looked it up and found this.

"The first commercially available phone to run Android was the HTC Dream, released on 22 October 2008."

The Droid didn't come out till mid October of '09.

And for the record, the Droid Charge does not have GB either.

Regards.
Droid is a Verizon brand, not exclusive to Moto, and the Droid Charge is made by Samsung. No need to argue 'bout which phone is the flagship here.

Thanks, Robrecht

Agreed. Droid is the flagship franchise for Android smartphones at Verizon. Being first does not entail being a flagship.

The phones in the Droid franchise so far:

Motorola Droid A855
HTC Droid Eris ADR6200

Motorola Droid 2 A955
Motorola Droid X MB810
HTC Droid Incredible ADR6300

Motorola Droid 2 Global A956
Motorola Droid R2-D2 A957
Motorola Droid Pro XT610

HTC Droid Incredible 2 ADR6350
Motorola Droid X-2 MB870
[Upcoming] Motorola Droid 3 XT862

Samsung Droid Charge SCH-i510
[Upcoming] Motorola Droid Bionic LTE

While Motorola certainly dominates that list, I clearly see two other manufacturers in the franchise, so its obviously not exclusive to Motorola. All of these phones were flagships when they were first released. The biggest of them was the Droid X obviously so far, but I expect the Droid Bionic to be in high demand as well. The term we use internally for scenarios like that is called an "iconic device".

I know it's subjective, but the Droid branding makes no difference to me (or whether something is considered a flagship device). I've looked at pretty much every phone out there, even the upcoming Bionic and none of them hold any appeal to me over the Thunderbolt. The Bionic is the closest maybe, but it doesn't have a kickstand which is a deal breaker for me. After this latest MR2 update, the ONLY thing I'm waiting for is 4G LTE! :D

I usually don't comment on stuff like this, but really, the kick stand is the deal breaker. I like HTC over Motorola and all but something like the kickstand seems so inconsequential out of all the specs you could choose from. Maybe It's just the drinking, but Jesus people.

Will the inevitable Gingerbread update for the TB Include Sense 3.0, or is that destined for a separate update?

:D That one made me laugh too. It may not be a deal breaker but I actually think it is one of those little things many take for granted that really make the TB stand out from among the crowd of fast 4.3" phones out these days.

Call me crazy! :p But, I'm dead serious about the kickstand! It's a killer feature! I use it all the time whether at work or home where the phone sits next to me on the desk on its kickstand (or on my nightstand as my alarm clock). No need for a dock or something else to prop up the phone. And with one finger, I can just reach over, hit the power button, unlock the screen and use the phone without having to pick it up!

One other thing against the Bionic.... Motoblur! :(

I agree. And I don't use it for all the things you do. All I use it for is to stand it up right in front of me at my desk while it is charging. I can easily check it for info at a good viewing angle while it is charging. Just like a dock, except I prefer vertical. I also use it as a speakerphone while on the kickstand on my desk. I find myself using that kickstand a huge amount. And initially I didn't even care that it had a kickstand. Funny...
