HTC Rep Confirms that Gingerbread is Up Next for the Thunderbolt

Re: HTC Rep Confirms that Gingerbread is Up Next for the Thunderb

I'm beginning to come up with a classification system for phone owners.

1. CO (Completely Oblivious). The vast majority of users. These people bought the phone, don't peruse forums (or at least not much), and don't really think about updates, rooting, problems, etc. They just use the phone and put up with any problems.

2. RTFM (Rooted, Tooted and Firmware Modded). These are the guys that don't wait for a second before rooting their phones, installing custom roms and tooting about it all over the internet. They often don't have much sympathy for those who whine and complain about an update not being out as they already have somehow triumphed by getting the leaked update before it is available to the general public.

3. Updaticus Impatientus. These are the folks who just can't seem to live without the next update. In real life, these are the people who are fidgety, cranky and hard to please. They expect the latest update of Android to be out two days after their hardware is released and often troll the net looking for any hint that an update is coming. They are eager to believe any rumor about a date by which an update will be forthcoming and get very angry when those rumors are proved false. They will believe and post anything, no matter the arcane source (carrier reps, vendor reps, etc.). In extreme cases, you can hear them stating that they will dump this piece of **** if such and such update is not out by yyyyy. They will also proclaim that they will never go back to VZW, Sprint, etc because they don't care about the customers enough to keep their phones updated with the latest and greatest. A few radical cases will openly threaten class action lawsuits or other legal action.

4. PC (Peaceful Coexisters). These are the few who venture on to the boards with the attitude that the updates will come when they come. They tend to not get impatient or make demands. The bane of the Impatientus, while not always being completely happy with their device, they are willing to wait for fixes to come out. They don't see the manufacturers as the enemy and realize that these things take time, which really frustrates the impatienticus to no end.

Any other classifications out there? I thought of trying to tie each of these to political parties, but I really don't want that firestorm!

Who knows, maybe I can develop this and use it for a dissertation sometime!:p

Don't forget:

5. FO (Fanboyus Obnoxiousus). Similar to CO. In complete denial of any problems the device may have, they believe their phone is better than all others. In fact, they start to see deficiencies as advantages. Most FOs believe that their phone was the first to have any given feature, and that all other phones would still have cranks, had it not been for theirs leading the way.

Oh. I am a PC.

Well, I'm too afraid to root. I am obviously somewhat aware or I wouldn't be around here. If I was a PC, I wouldn't have posted something I could get flamed over. On the other hand, I do get a little impatient, just not enough to rant and rave about it as I know that software development in a large enterprise is not a simple task..

Maybe I should come up with another category....

Yep that sounds like where I am at too. I want an update and the only reason I am really impatient for this one is I want the reboot issue completely fixed and would like to see a little better battery life. Only reason I installed the leak was because MR1 was so bad for me (up to a dozen reboots a day usually at least 4), making te phone completely unusable. I've only ever rooted one device and that was the Moto Droid, via that auto root app that was around for a while, just to see what it was like. I would like Gingerbread sooner rather than later but am not gonna worry about it until the beginning of August or so. On the other hand I did install the leaked gingerbread for the Droid Pro (and write better instructions for doing so) but I would not have done that if it were not a signed release with release keys that all I had to do was flash it the same way we do an OTA manually. And yes I will install an update manually IF it can be determined that it is the official update.

The same people worship the ground Steve Jobs and Jonathan Geller (BGR) walks on and worship at the altar at the Cult of Mac and scour the web for any and all information about upcoming updates to said phone and use features that are not even out yet (even though the competition has had for years) as reasons their phone is better, because they have somehow made it "better".

There are people who worship the ground Jonathan Geller walk on?! Besides him and his Mom, can you name one?

About a third of the people in the comments section of any of his editorials or reviews. The sheep take his views on tech as the Gospel Truth....
