Global unlocked G4 (LG-H815) users....

Question:

Are having bands on a device a hardware or software element?

Posted via the Android Central App

Is there a US unlocked version, or is this one the only unlocked one? A couple friends of mine are on AT&T, and thinking about moving off contract but staying with AT&T. This would require buying a phone outright. Is there any advantage to buying AT&T's version vs the global unlocked version?

Mostly it is hardware, sometimes manufacturers/carriers disable certain bands but 99% of the time it is hardware.

LG doesn't sell a unlocked model (morons), so the only way is to buy the H815 model from eBay or other third party sellers. If someone is buying off contract then H815 would be the best route but it will have the generic LG warranty etc, you can't walk into a carrier store and exchange if something is wrong. You probably have to go thru hoops for warranty support. Personally, that's alright since I keep changing phones but if you are someone who generally has issues with phones then warranty can be tricky even though it has LG global warranty.

So you mean to tell me that the manufacturer has to add certain hardware for every particular carrier that wants a particular band on their device?!?! Thats crazy!! lol!

H815 warranty doesnt apply in the US, havent called LG about what to do if phone fails yet, their email request only allows you to choose UK or Ireland lol

For those of us who received the H815 from LG through Android Central.....I'm sure we could have James contact LG for us and have them warranty our devices in case anyone of us was having a hard time getting the warranty on our own.

Phones like iPhone and Nexus 6 have very few models to cover all the bands from different carriers. Hopefully more manufactures do the same, but has to do with licensing the radio or something so they just want to put what is necessary for the carrier, cost cutting I guess.

(morons)? LG or people who think there is a unlocked version? The LG-H815 is a globally unlocked version just so you know.

There is a HUGE advantage to buying the LG-H815 global unlocked version.
1. No carrier bloat
2. No Carrier IQ
3. Carrier Unlocked
4. Original LG apks not removed like "FM radio"

Obviously LG for not selling the unlocked version thru their website in the US, instead we have to do all this circus of buying via third party sellers on eBay or other websites.

If LG was to sell the unlocked version themselves then there would be no reason for any carrier version.
Carriers=Contracts=Money
When I say contracts I'm not talking about a customers contract with a carrier but the contract a carrier makes with LG.
LG have a guaranteed amount of phone orders with carriers whether or not carriers sell them to customers.

Moto, HTC, Sony, Apple etc sell unlocked models via their website just fine. I have no pity for these useless carriers and OEMs. Instead of bending over back to carriers they could care little bit about customers who want a clean unbranded non carrier version.

We are talking about LG here and they did, that's why they released the LG-H815.
A clean non carrier version, unbranded would mean its not even LG.
Even a carrier unlocked version is carrier branded.

Dude I'm done with you... I'll make it simple.

1. I can buy a HTC, Moto, Sony unlocked phones without carrier bull [language removed] directly from their US website with local warranty etc.

2. With LG (And Samsung), I need to import it from outside US for an unlocked model without carrier crap and they don't carry US warranty. So anything goes wrong I have to jump thru hoops to get it repaired under warranty.

I'm done replying , anyway I'm having fun with the H815 model that I bought on eBay.

You see it wasn't that hard to get a carrier free unlocked version then, you just got it from a different "domain"
Instead of typing lg.com you typed ebay.com
Don't get your feathers ruffled man its just a comment on LG and how they conduct business on a corporate level.
