Gmail has stopped displaying my mail live as it comes...any ideas why?

My email still works but I have to refresh it manually. Before I did a factory reset before Xmas my emails would just come through live. I keep missing important updates because of this. Ive looked through the settings and thought I'd be able to sort something but no luck. Please could someone offer some advice? Cheers.

Did you just upgrade to Jelly Bean?
This works on a Note 2 for sure.
Go to Settings, select Data Usage and hit the menu button: Check "Auto-sync Data"
That should fix your email sync problem
