GMail thread order reversed / unreversed

The GMail app on my wife's S3 has a funny querk that I can't seem to find any information on anywhere.

When she gets an e-mail thread/conversation (where she has multiple back and forth entries), sometimes when she opens the e-mail, the conversation order is reversed from what you would normally expect - i.e. the oldest email in the thread is posted first with the newest e-mail posted all the way at the bottom, requiring her to scroll all the way to the bottom to read the latest response.

Then a funny thing happens. After she exits the thread, if she goes back in later, the order reverts back to normal - i.e. the most recent e-mail response is on top with the older parts of the conversation showing up in reverse chronological order - the way you would normally expect to read an e-mail.

I've checked through all the settings to try and find a solution, but can't figure it out. I've turned off "conversation view" in the GMail settings, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. In fact, her settings are identical to my settings that I use on my Bionic, and I never have the same problem as she has - all my e-mail conversations show up in reverse chronological order when I open them up.

Does anybody have a solution??? Thanks

On every Android device I've ever owned it's been that way....oldest message at the top of the thread, newest at the bottom, just like it is on the desktop version.

Now, when you're reading a single message, of course, the newest response will be appended on the top, and all previous content will be shown below, chronilogically with the first message of the thread at the bottom. That's just any single message of the thread, but the thread itself it always shown with the oldest message up top, newest message at the bottom.

Now, one thing I have noticed is that if I "star" a message in the thread it seems to always expand that message when I open the thread, as opposed to the newest message, and I have to scroll down to view the most recent content.

I agree, that's the way a single message is supposed to look when you open it - reverse chronological order with the newest response on top and the oldest on bottom. That's how my e-mails look when I open them on the desktop, and that's how they should look on the phone.

However, my wife's S3 has been randomly reversing that order . Sometimes she'll open a new e-mail and the string of e-mails in the thread shows up with the oldest e-mail on top, requiring her to scroll all the way down to read the newest response. It seems to happen at random, and I can't figure it out.

Exactly...the STRING of email shows up that way ... that's normal. I guess the problem is that it isn't automatically focusing on the newest message, but rather an older one in the thread? It's not as if the gmail app can re-arrange the text within a SINGLE message... As I mentioned, I've had this happen before when I had put a "star" on a particular message in a thread (it would also open with focus to the starred message rather than the newest unread one and I'd have to scroll down), but normally it should focus on the first unread message of the thread (with the older messages compressed and hidden by default). Is that what the issue is?

Again, everything you describe sounds normal to me regarding the order of the messages displayed in the thread.

I know this thread is most definitely in Zombie mode now.
But for those of you searching for an answer, Gmail has in fact added this to settings a while back.

  1. Click Settings Cog Icon
  2. Conversation View: Choose OFF

This will give you a more natural email experience instead of those backward conversations.
No more scrolling for 30 seconds before finding the latest message :)
