Hey guys,

So, last week my Evo was stolen and I was swindled into getting the Best Buy warranty over the Sprint (Fail) so now I'm in the market for a new phone at full price. Yay me... :(

Anywho, I was about to just get another Evo when I started seeing news about the Epic.

Now... I loved my Evo, but there are a few things about the Epic that are luring me away.

*Physical Keyboard
I'm not sure why, but I'm a sucker for a good physical keyboard... probably the gamer in me.

*GPU
I don't play a ton of video games on my phone, but it is fun from time-to-time and I think I'd play them a bit more with the phone being better equipped for it.

*Display
That Super AMOLED is just very pretty.

*Feel-Factor?
Now I can't comment on this one as far as personal experience goes, but almost every review or comparison has stated that the Epic feels smaller than the Evo.
I'm sure this is just attributed to the rounded corners and lighter weight.

Now, that said... I'm not without reservation.
As for the things that are keeping the Evo in the back of mind:

*Inactive Dev community
The Evo and most HTC phones all have a pretty active and awesome community for rooting and such. I'm just afraid Samsung and the Epic will be lacking in that department.

*Sense v TouchWiz
Sense has come a long way and I don't think there is any question on which is the better of the 2.

*Android/Firmware Updates
HTC/Sprint has been doing good so far with the Evo getting that nice update for battery life as well as Froyo.

*Manufacture Quality
I've slowly become a pretty big fan of HTC, but I don't know a lot about Samsung in the phone department.
I've heard a few horror stories about updates, but HTC has a few in the area as well... I'm just not sure on the build quality of Samsung phones.

I know taking a post about changing from my Evo to another phone on the Evo forums may seem a little counter-productive, but I liked my Evo and wanted to get the community's opinion.

I can comment about one thing - I have used quite a few sammy's in the early 2000's and the battery life on all of them have been trifling. But, if you like the physical keyboard I won't compare both any further :)

I envy the Epic's GPU but you have to stop and think. Once EA and other developers start to port their top 3-d games to android will they base them around running smooth on only the galaxy phones. Or will they take time to optimize them for a wider footprint like the snapdragon line. Just my 2 cents.

Unrelated to your question I'd call Sprint and ask if they can do anything for you on the full price issue. If you have been a customer for a while they might have mercy to save you at least a little $$$.

I agree that the battery life can be an issue. I came from a Samsung Moment, and gave that to my wife when I got the EVO. She likes the physical keyboard. I thought I would too, coming from a Blackberry and a Palm Pre, but I found it awkward to use.

From a build quality, I think the Moment was a solid phone, and I can only guess that the EPIC will be just a solid. I like HTC Sense a lot, even over the stock Android UI.

I will be curious to see how the EPIC is received when it comes out.

First off, i'm sorry to hear about you Evo being stolen. I've been seeing quite a few stories like that over the past couple of days. It sucks.

Everything that you said in your post sums up EXACTLY how I feel. I currently have an Evo but I pre-ordered the Epic because i'm returning my Evo.

For me, the biggest thing about the Epic is the physical keyboard. Coming from a Blackberry, it's been hard for me to adjust to not having actual buttons to press. Especially when i'm composing an email. So i'm extremely excited about that! Plus, I went in Radio Shack the other day and played around with the Samsung Vibrant. They had a demo of 'Avatar' playing on it and I was truly amazed by the screen. It's gorgeous!

However, i'm a little worried about Samsung (hardware and software) quality. I've NEVER owned a Samsung phone so I have no idea what to expect. That's why i've been checking on all of the reviews on the Epic.

Granted, both the Evo and Epic are fantastic phones but for this one, I think i'm going to go ahead and spring for the Epic. :D

they both look like good phones, I chose the evo because I didn't wonna pay an extra $50 for a slide keyboard that I dont really need.

yah Im a cheap ***

get another EVO...or you may regret !!

Every Samsung phone I have had, and almost every one anyone I know has had....has crapped out ! Maybe they have Improved the quality, I dont know. I went from a Palm Pre to an EVO....and If I was in your shoes, I would just get another EVO, even though it has no hard keyboard, it IS a 2.2 Froyo STATE OF THE ART device !!!
DONT DO THE SAMSUNG MAN !!!!

Hope your Epic gets the Froyo update. It may never get one. The Evo might even get Gingerbread. I can practically guarantee the Epic won't.

I envy the Epic's GPU but you have to stop and think. Once EA and other developers start to port their top 3-d games to android will they base them around running smooth on only the galaxy phones. Or will they take time to optimize them for a wider footprint like the snapdragon line. Just my 2 cents.

Actually the Samsung GPU architecture is a lot more popular than snapdragon.

I cannot figure out why someone would get the best buy warranty when it costs more and covers less.

I have been playing with the epic for weeks now, and it is a nice device, but it does have its cons. The Samsung does feel smaller in the hand, but the evo feels much more solid, and durable in the hand. Also the samsung does not get high quality videos on youtube. This is a deal breaker for me, as I am always using youtube. Also no telling how fast samsung will update the phone.

The Evo sucks for multimedia. Picture looks so dull and color is so washed out.

I'm going from a Samsung Moment to the Evo. Samsung's quality SUCKS. Sprint/Samsung have already announced that the Moment will not be getting 2.2, and it took forever for us to get 2.1 and they couldn't even do that right.

The quality of the phone sucks too. They can't even get the GPS right. The Moment's GPS is horrible and from what I have read about the Galaxy S, they still have a GPS issue.

Do you expect the Hero to get 2.2? Do you know how pointless that is? They are low end devices and Sprint said barely anyone updated to 2.1.

Well to each his own. Both are great phones but keep in mind the reviews are still saying that Evo > Epic.

Wow so what did Sprint say about your stolen phone? Did they say they could track it or send it a message and lock it. Even if the person who stole it knew how to restore it the phone needs to go thru a activation process thru Sprint in order for the phone to be able to work on there network. Now if they flash it to cricket mobile then that's a different story. Well I hope you enjoy your epic, and remember, if you don't like it, return it in the 30 days and get another Evo.
