Going Screen Protector Free

Not trying to be a naysayer but you will notice that no where in the press release does it say that the Captivate (or any of the other telco tied versions) contain Gorilla Glass. The press release says that "Samsung Galaxy S Premium Smartphone" (notice a lack of s after Smartphone) has gorilla glass. This only says that their unlocked telco free phone has gorilla glass. It does not say that the Galaxy S line of phones has the glass only that the Galaxy S Premium Smartphone does.

I am starting to be very doubtful that any of the telco specific versions have it. I haven't seen ATT claim gorilla glass nor the other telcos.

I have an InvisShield on my phone and plan on keeping it on. It's not as nice as having no screen protector but given the "vagueness" of this talk about gorilla glass on these, I'm not taking it off.

If you read the release I posted - it specifically states "Captivate"

Actually the press release does not, but the blogger/news person, assumes it does and says it does. Again the official corning press release does not, but the person reporting about the press release assumes they do.

I'm just wondering if the press assumed they said all Galaxy S phones when all they said was their one specific one does, and Samsung has kept quite because it only helps them sell more phones with-out being legally in trouble for false advertising.

Oh, and if you want to read something amusing I tried to ask their online tech support about the gorilla glass issue:

My Questions to them:
Hello,

I've read a lot of conflicting information concerning what the screen on the ATT Samsung Captivate phone is made of. Samsung recently had a press release claiming that the Galaxy S Smartphone has gorilla glass. But, does that includes all versions of the Galaxy S phones or just the Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S Premium Smartphone.

Does the Att Captivate use Gorilla Glass for the screen?

Thanks,
D-Caf

Their amusing response:

Dear D-Caf,

See the attached specifications for all the Galaxy S phones:

Technology 4 inches WVGA 480x800 pixels Super AMOLED
Resolution WVGA
Size 4"

The Galaxy phones do not use Galaxy Glass.

Thanks for choosing Samsung.

Sincerely,

Yvonne

And yes, I followed up with a second request for clarification on the gorilla glass (linking to the press release) and this unknown material called Galaxy Glass.

You are right on.

I sent an email to Samsung about the Gorilla Glass and received a reply that was not even relevant to my question. Makes one wonder..................

Ok, so here is the latest response from tech support:

Dear D-Caf,

The US Galaxy S issued phones do not have Gorilla Glass, that only seems to beavailable in the European markets. The Captivate if issued in the US, it just has an Amoled Screen.

So take it for what it's worth, I'm not 100% sure this rep had all the info.

But, based on the wording of the press release I would say we likely do not have Gorilla Glass on the Captivate.

The tech support reps answering phones and emails (and even 3rd level tech support) do not have the answer to these things - they have access to troubleshooting and diagnostic data.

The only reason I think we may have Gorilla glass is because it is thinner then normal LCD screen glass and the SAMOLED screens are made in one sandwich that includes glass - it seems unlikely that they would be producing different panels of the same size.

What is strange is that Samsung will not say one way or another - it should be an official statement somewhere.

meaning the captivate doesn't have gorilla glass...

only reason companies would try to avoid or go around a question, buy time and make people think it still might have it.

oh well, I STILL LOVE MY ROOTED CAPTIVATE!!!!!! <3

Oh, I very much love my Captivate! One of the nicest smart-phones I've had to date (Treo 650/680, Nokia E71 Unlocked). Best signal in the basement I've had in years.

Just going to be sure I keep a quality screen protector on it ;-).

Given the reports seen here in the forums of users who have scratched their screens, and lack of an explicit statement from AT&T (about what would be a great selling point), it seems likely that we don't have gorilla glass.

I would not be prepared to repeat any of the scratch-test videos with my phone.

I am just really tired of all the grease marks from my fingers, I wash them a good amount during the day, just so I don't get them...still they keep coming back and quick. Next step, hand sanitizer....jeeeeez.

I got 2 new screen protectors from amazon coming...see if they do better with sunlight reflection and smudges.

Screen protectors make the super amoled screen look like junk. Glass is pretty tough stuff. Don't throw it on the concrete or carry it with keys and you should be fine. 2 weeks no marks, but then again I carry it in a pocket by its self... *Knocks on wood* hopefully its quite scratch resistant.

Good news everybody. According to Engadget the Galaxy S has Gorilla Glass. From my 19 months with an unprotected iphone 3g I can agree with the statement that if you carry it in a pocket by itself it should never get any scratches.I am running my captivate naked too.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897

I am ripping off my screen protector! It is junk and has scratches on it...piece of crap...but I did pay 2 bucks for it...ha!

I am also going protector free.... i am pretty careful with my phone, and successfully kept my last phone, a blackberry bold, pretty scratch free.

The screen just functions and looks so much better to me without a protector... it's worth the risk.

I have had my captivate running completely naked since I got it over a month ago (excpet for about 4 days where I tried the Samsung Case...it sucked) and so far no scratches anywhere on the phone. I do though keep it in a poecket by itelf and am very careful with it when using it.
