Goodbye to my Bionic

Can I make it worse? :D Not only do you have that beast of a phone coming...the NX5 will be based on it and we're hearing an Oct 15 KLP/NX5/NX10 "fun day". :D Enjoy! LMAO

I can't keep waiting for the next "best" phone. I will be upgrading end of August or beginning of September. Now it is between the S4 and G2.

I have been with the Samsung Galaxy note 2 phone since June. Couldn't be more happier. I'm a big guy so it's a perfect phone for me. I've no desire in any other phone especially from Motorola.

I'm going to add in another Goodbye to my Bionic. I got it the day it came out and was super excited. Like everyone else, I grew more and more frustrated with it over the last 2+ years. It was up for renewal in May and I was just going to hold on to it for a while, but in the last month or so it's gone from 'kinda ok' to 'really bad'. A perfect example is that if I use the search bar at the top, type something and hit search the entire phone locks for about a minute before the search resumes. Plus plenty of other issues, but that's a good example.

I know I shouldn't do it, but I'm planning to get either the Maxx or Ultra as soon as they come out.

You're not alone. I know a few people getting one of the Droid's. I don't personally understand the appeal but if it's what works for you then awesome. Just don't have a lot of expectation of it being rooted any time soon. Lots of people claim that just because Dan quit doesn't mean Moto devices won't get rooted but I say good luck with that theory. But for those who don't care about root or custom roms the Droids are probably going to be good phones.

That's me. I've never rooted a phone, I don't know how to root a phone, I'm not even entirely sure what rooting does to a phone. I think there was about one thing that I wanted to do to my Bionic that I was told I would have to root it to do whatever it was.
As long as the new Maxx/Ultra doesn't turn into another Bionic, I'll be happy. I'm also happy with my Nexus.

The one thing I worry about with Moto is update frequency and speed. My RAZR HD still has 4.1.2. My S4 GPE was updated to 4.3 a week ago. Moto has created a very complicated architecture with the "x8" thing they got going on. How quickly can they port that to new versions of Android and then push those updates out through VZW? Tough question. 10 to 1 the Moto X gets updated first.

Hopefully soon I can upgrade my BIONIC. I so want to take it and throw it hard as I can across a parking lot.

Naw just sell it and get a car dock for your new phone with the money. :)

While I'm here, I will put out a warning that Hashcode put out on twitter the other day. I repeated it in the HoB discussion thread, as well, but, it bears repeating. This will come as a massive shock to many, but, the OMAP phones (Bionic, RAZR, D4) are going to get a new update soon. I know, I know. WOA, right? I'm fairly sure it's to fix the master key vulnerability. However, Hashcode said this new update will forever break SafeStrap. And I can promise there'll be no root forthcoming any time soon for these builds, either. If I were on the Bionic still, I'd probably consider my options. If you're using a rom in SS, there's really no reason to take anymore updates. If you're using stock, well, that's more complicated. You'll lose the ability to root it should you ever need to FXZ it. You can probably keep root with Voodoo or the HoB through the update, but, no SS after that sort of limits the potential. Anyway, I just wanted people to be aware that a new update is coming and that it's not going to be something everyone wants to take. Once there, you'll be stuck there. Think long and hard on that choice.

Any guesses as to when this update will be pushed out? Would like to warn some of my friends that have the Bionic. I'm running AOSP Eclipse v5 right now, so I should be fine. Are there any ways to disable the update from installing? Besides not running stock rom?

No clue as to when. You can freeze the updater apk. I don't recall the exact name offhand but you so have to be rooted to do it. Or you can mess with the build properties file and change the version so it doesn't match what the updater is looking for. Also need root.

I went with freezing, and "updater" is indeed the name of the app

Black moto X ordered. Bionic's been good to me for almost 2 years, and as my first smartphone I'll always have find memories. *sniffle*

I rooted both mine and wife's Bionic and did the same, froze the updater. Not interested in Verizon screwing up my phone anymore than they already have - they run perfect as is on 4.1.2 and I would have loaded an alternative ROM but we both use the Lapdock and need webtop. Anyone have experience with freezing the updater? Can we count on that really working?

Of course. Freeze the updater and no more updates.

Thanks for the response, still loving my Bionic and am happy with how it works now - do not want any more updates. I know many people never had a need or tried out the lapdock, and when it first came out with GB it really sucked. But after ICS it basically turned your Bionic into a tablet with a keyboard and it was a beautiful thing. I use mine in my office at work and just can't live without it - I still get so many curious isheep and other admirers whenever i bring it to meetings. Battery life lasts all day if I need it to while docked, it is still amazing technology and I will never understand why Moto moved away from it. Will be keeping my Bionics for this reason alone for a very long time.

Any of you guys reconsidering the Moto X in light of how things have shaken out with it? Users are loving it, and the spec debate seems to have mostly fallen away in light of the phone's performance. I'm still on my stock Bionic, and probably never going to root a phone (even though it might be fun), so the Moto X seems like a good near-stock android experience for my upgrade which is probably not too far off.

Nope. Even if I needed a new phone I'd not consider it. Far better phones out there for the price. Wait til you see what the nx5 can do.

If VZW were getting it, I'd absolutely wait, but I hear they won't and at least right now no other carrier is as good in my area. Will try to be patient anyway ... thanks.
