That's me. I've never rooted a phone, I don't know how to root a phone, I'm not even entirely sure what rooting does to a phone. I think there was about one thing that I wanted to do to my Bionic that I was told I would have to root it to do whatever it was. You're not alone. I know a few people getting one of the Droid's. I don't personally understand the appeal but if it's what works for you then awesome. Just don't have a lot of expectation of it being rooted any time soon. Lots of people claim that just because Dan quit doesn't mean Moto devices won't get rooted but I say good luck with that theory. But for those who don't care about root or custom roms the Droids are probably going to be good phones.
While I'm here, I will put out a warning that Hashcode put out on twitter the other day. I repeated it in the HoB discussion thread, as well, but, it bears repeating. This will come as a massive shock to many, but, the OMAP phones (Bionic, RAZR, D4) are going to get a new update soon. I know, I know. WOA, right? I'm fairly sure it's to fix the master key vulnerability. However, Hashcode said this new update will forever break SafeStrap. And I can promise there'll be no root forthcoming any time soon for these builds, either. If I were on the Bionic still, I'd probably consider my options. If you're using a rom in SS, there's really no reason to take anymore updates. If you're using stock, well, that's more complicated. You'll lose the ability to root it should you ever need to FXZ it. You can probably keep root with Voodoo or the HoB through the update, but, no SS after that sort of limits the potential. Anyway, I just wanted people to be aware that a new update is coming and that it's not going to be something everyone wants to take. Once there, you'll be stuck there. Think long and hard on that choice.
Any guesses as to when this update will be pushed out? Would like to warn some of my friends that have the Bionic. I'm running AOSP Eclipse v5 right now, so I should be fine. Are there any ways to disable the update from installing? Besides not running stock rom?
No clue as to when. You can freeze the updater apk. I don't recall the exact name offhand but you so have to be rooted to do it. Or you can mess with the build properties file and change the version so it doesn't match what the updater is looking for. Also need root.

I rooted both mine and wife's Bionic and did the same, froze the updater. Not interested in Verizon screwing up my phone anymore than they already have - they run perfect as is on 4.1.2 and I would have loaded an alternative ROM but we both use the Lapdock and need webtop. Anyone have experience with freezing the updater? Can we count on that really working?I went with freezing, and "updater" is indeed the name of the app

Nope. Even if I needed a new phone I'd not consider it. Far better phones out there for the price. Wait til you see what the nx5 can do.
