Google Assistant frequently says "Okay, who do you want to call" repeatedly after I told it to call a person or a number. Sometimes it just dials it, sometimes it types out the name or number I just asked it to call and says "Okay, who do you want to call" once in which I case I repeat it again and then it says "Okay" and calls it, and sometimes it says "Okay, who do you want to call" repeatedly -- I tell it again "Call name or number" and it again says "Okay, who do you want to call" until I give up after a few loops and dial it manually.

I've had this phone with essentially the same overall configuration since it first came out very early in 2024. The problem only began about maybe a month ago more or less.

S24U. Android 14.

It's gotten quite frequent. I just installed a major software update to the OS that came through this morning and it didn't change the behavior at all.

I went into Assistant > Storage and cleared the Cache a couple of weeks ago, which didn't help. I did not clear Data, which I can do if you recommend it.

Thanks!

How's it going? Are you still using Google Assistant or have you switched over to Gemini? Gemini doesn't seem as capable as Assistant was. I haven't tried to call anyone with it but it doesn't seem to get basic stuff right.

If you're not sure if you're using Assistant or Gemini here is how to check and enable Assistant.

To switch from Gemini to Google Assistant on a phone or tablet, you can do the following:
  1. Open the Gemini app
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the top right corner
  3. Select Switch to Google Assistant
  4. Tap Google Assistant and then Switch [1]
You can also switch from Gemini to Google Assistant by going to your device's settings:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Google / Google Services
  3. Tap All Services
  4. Tap Settings for Google apps
  5. Tap Search, Assistant, and Voice
  6. Tap Google Assistant
  7. Tap the Google Assistant bubble [2]
To turn off Gemini on a computer, you can go to gemini.google.com, click Activity, and then turn off or turn off and delete activity. [3]

If this isn't your issue I would say it could be a result of an update bug. Try clearing the cache for your Google app.
Settings>Apps>Google>Storage>Clear Cache/Clear Data

Clearing the data might require you to log in again but shouldn't result in the loss of any data. You may have to retrain your voice, but I think even that is stored in the cloud, if you use Google for backups..

I don't think we've gotten any big updates recently but you could also clear the partition cache if the former didn't help. Or retrain your voice model.

Let us know what you find.

I'm definitely still only using Assistant. It's apparently recognizing my voice fine since it types out exactly what I said every time, often with it just being numbers for making a call, but it still asks me to repeat it most of the time anyway. And I did already clear the "cache" for Assistant to no avail.

Clearing "data" is something I've been reluctant to do, and you say to do that for all of Google rather than just for Assistant, so I guess I'll have to be brave and do all of that next. I'm trying to avoid a lot of time recreating things if I can avoid it. I have no idea how to clear "partition cache." I guess I'll have to look that up if needed.

Thanks!
