I had Google Assistant muted on my Xiaomi Mi 9*, and then today it started talking back to me. I had not touched settings.
Following the instructions [here](https://www.theverge.com/2019/8/27/20835315/how-to-silence-google-assistant-mute-android-phone) I turned it back on, then of again:
* Open Google Assistant.
* Tap the symbol on the lower right corner.
* Tap your personal icon on the upper right corner.
* Select “Settings.”
* Select “Assistant” (on the top line).
* Scroll down to “Assistant devices” and find either the word “Phone” or the name that you’ve assigned your phone. Tap on it.
* Scroll down to “Voice and Speech” and tap on “Speech output.”
* Select “Hands-free only.”
Then I rebooted my phone and did it again. Nothing helped. It won't shut up.
*Being a Xiaomi phone with the MIUI OS might be relevant (it's MIUI 11 on Android 10). I've had so many problems with MIUI – I'll definitely get an Android One phone next time, but that doesn't help me now.
