Google Contacts has constant sync error

[AC Question]

Sync contacts has a double arrow saying that "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly". It's been like this for months now. How do I fix this so that it starts syncing again.

Welcome to Android Central! What happens when you go to Settings>Accounts-Google>[your account] and uncheck Google Contacts, then check it again? Does it still fail to sync?
