Just a few questions to get started.
What device do you have?
Are you saying that prior to this your post here, Google Messages would automatically translate incoming messages to a different language, or was this something you had to do by clicking on the message, a button, or in some other way?
I found this video that talks about this but from the caption that I read it sounds like it is asking you to export the message to Google Translate, which doesn't sound like what you are wanting to do.
Google AI says, depending what device you have.
To translate incoming messages on a Pixel phone using Google Translate, you can:
- Open a text message in another language
- A prompt will appear to download the new language
- Read the translated text message
You can also switch between the original and translated language by tapping the language bubble. To update your language preferences, you can:

- Tap the translate chip
- Update the translation languages in the drop-down menu
Live Translate is available on Pixel 8, 8 Pro, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, 6, 6 Pro, and 6a. To set up Live Translate, you can:

Google Chat also offers a Translate My Chat feature that provides free translations in over 50 languages.
Is this how you were doing it before or does this help?
Unfortunately, I don't communicate with anyone who doesn't message me in English, so I'm not able to test any of these.
I got excited when I first saw this forum post but then noticed that it was 2019. This link is to the Google Translate Help forum. Maybe you can find other newer threads there or post your question there for more specific help.
